Are you expecting a lot of political names to come up in response? Is that why you posted it, here?

Last time I looked this was the Dungeon of Political and Religious Discussion and since this is a somewhat Religious question this seemed like the place for it.

This is 100% religious question. First man created gods to explain weather/storms, then to eat and be merry, they thanked the gods for their food.

Then to get you hooked, books were written, telling you, you were born a sinner, you are to be eternally repentant and even then, might...not be enough.

Enough for what you ask ? Enough to be given an after-life. Mankind throughout all of this created a fear of death, then religion tells you an unrepentant death means your afterlife is hell, so you had better obey god and I'll tell what his commands are.

So not to be cast in hell, you had better seek salvation. We have an ATM right in our facility if you need cash. In the true John-the-Baptist tradition and so beautifully reinforced by the Medicis' who sold absolution even for those already dead. Saved the Medici's ecumenical, financial/banking/political power.

I wonder if wall street feels god is on their side too.

Sorry to inject a little secular humanism but kinkroids, there is...nobody 'coming' for you.

If all of these thoughts makes anybody feel better, great. No problems at all.

Many of us, have been believers all of our lives.
We are going to suddenly STOP "believing" because a human being on a message board, told us not to believe!

I love this place, and you can't make this stuff up.

How about this: If you do not BELIEVE-Do not BELIEVE.....IF you BELIEVE-BELIEVE!
I have been here for over 12 years, and I don't think I have ever seen anyone on here, attempting to "covert" someone.
As usual for everyone, To each their own.....and that includes what you CHOOSE to Believe.
Live and let live.

The only time what someone "believes" in, should be an "issue"---is when it harms/or impedes the "rights" of another person.

You are correct of course, we are all free in our thoughts and anyone can have faith.

I just see no reason to, no evidence that it does any good, except rather to institutionalize, commercialize and monetize [sic]...faith.

In a book I was reading, the subject came up about the "Happy Hunting Ground" and that one of the dead would come and lead you there, when the time came and the question came up who would you like to come and lead you there?

So I ask, if there were such a thing; Who, of the dead, would you want to come to lead you?

Hmmm, kinda reminds me of the first time I (shoulda) had sex....

Without knowing a thing about this lifestyle, it all went south (esp anatomically) when she took my hand and starting leading me to her room.

My answer to your question is...., "no-one!"

Focus.

'Everyone' has faith and religion.

You have faith when you take a curve that your car will stay on the road, you have faith that your physics is correct that when you jump you will come back to the earth and not wind up on the moon.
You have religion because you have a system of beliefs that you live by.
Monetizing faith demonstrates the poor if not despicable state of the human condition.

Marini -> RE: Who would you want to come for you? (12/16/2017 9:58:44 PM)

It's funny, I have had faith conversations {in my head} and with other people, plenty of times.

Some of us believe in a higher power/creator and some of us do not.

It popped into my head {a few times} that maybe there is nothing else.

The way I resolve this issue {for myself} is I rather go through life BELIEVING there is more than this, and that I will
see most of my loved ones again.
I don't care to believe anything else.
In fact, I refuse to believe anything else.

If it happens GREAT, if it does not, it was better FOR ME to BELIEVE and be happy than not believing.

Put it this way, is NOT believing going to make me happy, or a better person?
Is NOT believing going to bring any sense of joy, peace or hope into my life?
NO
Damn skippy I will believe until my last breath.

I certainly want my loved one to come for ME, and she is going to do that.
These sort of thoughts make me happy and bring joy into my life.
No non-believer could ever change my mind.

So it works for ME.
To each their own.

Real0ne -> RE: Who would you want to come for you? (12/16/2017 10:02:07 PM)

interesteing point, philosophically believing is a positive approach while disbelieving is a negative approach.

We have had this conversation many times, but atheism is a belief!
LOL
People will fight hard to defend their belief in atheism, it gets comical.
They will furiously fight to defend their "non-beliefs", often harder than a Christian.
You can't make this stuff up.

ME- Devout heathen with a Christian upbringing who prays to a God who's existence he questions (except when in a pinch) with a higher purpose he may never attain muddling along trying to live (by my definition) a good life.
My mother passed before my seventh birthday and I don't remember much besides glimpses and hospital visits. I think though I'd enjoy having her lead me to a better place. I don't believe in the traditional concept of heaven/ hell but I do believe there's a chance our souls return to this Earth until we get it right and ascend to a higher level of existence. No doubt I've a few dozen more lives of practice before then.
With my luck I'll be brought back as some species of deer during hunting season, I'd deserve it.

First off, sympathies for losing your mom at such a young age. That's heart-breaking for anyone.

That part of your post reminds me of a now-famous musician I knew back in the day (1981-'82 or '83-ish) who lost his mother at a very young age (cancer) and was even anti-God for a long time (until he found he needed some belief in a "Higher Power" to get away from booze and drugs).

The rest of your post is almost exactly the beliefs of my best friend. She has espoused such to me, many times. I'm not trying to pick apart your beliefs, by any stretch, but I'm curious as to what your vision of "higher level of existence" looks like? Would others think it sounds a whole lot like their concept of "heaven"?

Michael

CaptR -> RE: Who would you want to come for you? (12/17/2017 7:15:17 AM)

Do I believe in the "Pearly Gated seat next to God" heaven? No, well, as stated in a tight spot I'll go with my childhood Christian brainwashed version. It's convenient, reassuring and self serving. In truth I think beyond our souls/ being a level of consciousness exists. Sounds silly to some but call it a cosmic collective if you like. One that provides the answers to such profound questions as whether or not this is a "Horton Hears A Who" existence or some variant of a "Clarke/ Kubrick production."
Will I be jamming my feet into a new pair of tennis shoes and doing myself in the next time a Comet comes whizzing by? Not likely, unless my mom shows up and says it's time to go. Thanks for your empathy btw. In truth I hardly knew her but hear she was one heck of a woman.

Milesnmiles -> RE: Who would you want to come for you? (12/17/2017 11:22:30 AM)

I'm not sure why some see this OP as an opportunity to get all Anti-Religious or Religious for that matter.

Like I said I was reading a novel and the question came up; who would you like to come for you and lead you to the "happy hunting ground"?

The question made me think of my mother who has been gone for some time and made me feel good thinking about her and I thought if I asked others the question, they might also feel good thinking about seeing loved ones again, they may have missed, if only in their imagination.

But it seems some would rather attack others and try to make them feel bad, than take a minute to experience just feeling good.

Well then let's take a look at it.
"Last time I looked this was the Dungeon of Political and Religious Discussion and since this is a somewhat Religious question this seemed like the place for it."

Is this in the OP or is it a answer to you who asked, why the OP is in the "the Dungeon of Political and Religious Discussion?

Is this an answer that tells everyone that that the OP is definitely about Religion and so you can say anything you want about Religion as a general topic?

Or is it just an answer that tells you why it is in "the Dungeon of Political and Religious Discussion"?

Also I would think that anyone reading that the OP was a "somewhat Religious question" would think, as regards the OP, that Religion was at best only a distant side point.

I got it, now!

You answer an honest question with snark about how this is a section of the forums for political and religious discussion and then, get "offended" when people "bring religion" into your OP.

You really just come here to "kick up shit", don't you?

Interestingly, most who have posted here seem to have understood the OP with out any explanation needed.

Here 's a suggestion for you; pretend that your posts in this thread are not yours and check them for snarkiness and "kick up shit"ness and see what you come up with.

After that remove all posts of you and Mr Atheist and replies to you and him and see how much "kick up shit" has been engaged in.
