Because repubs are in denial about their allergy to truth. I think it's because if they can convince themselves that the nonsense and drivel they spout is composed of self evident truths, rather than lies, distortions and bullshit, then they don't have to bother trying to provide any sort of coherent or credible defence of their irrational beliefs.
