I don't think the slavery thing lands the way they want it to either. The only way to have a positive influence on China's workers is to set higher standards though American-owned companies, and holding those companies accountable to our standards here. Foreign investment is always risky, especially in countries where they are more likely to nationalize whatever you're doing. But the companies find loopholes to skirt the laws of our country, and so we get these multinational conglomerates. And instead of bringing China to US standards, the US hasn't exactly declined to China's standards, but we don't progress with time, as we should. (In the progressive sense that time marches on, and we should be getting better every day.)
