Status: offline 		Though this topic has been discussed in many threads, there has yet to be a cohesive way here to track the continual back and forth.

This matters to me on a personal level, as Disney World is a huge part of Central Florida, in so many ways.

DeSantis isn't an anti-Disney person, as he was even married at Disney World. Disney isn't anti-DeSantis either, as the company contributed to a DeSantis PAC to get him elected in the first place.

The divide stems from the "don't say gay" bill, now law. Pixar animators and their allies wrote an open letter to then-CEO Bob Chapek regarding the bill, and what it could mean for them, and people like them. Not only had Disney contributed to DeSantis's gubernatorial campaign, they had also contributed to the campaigns of every sponsor of the "don't say gay" bill.

That was March of 2022, as Russia began the invasion of Ukraine.

Chapel speaking out on Twitter was followed by Ron DeSantis pulling the plug on Disney's Reedy Creek Improvement District, which is a large part of what brought Disney to Florida in the first place.

Both sides are in court now, on the state and federal levels. Both sides are taking shots at one another in the media regularly.

But Disney IS the media. The Disney Company has investments around the world, including streaming platforms, television networks (including a major American television news outlet), film companies, radio, magazines, comic books, music publishing & recordings... It's a long list. But Disney is a company, with an interest in profits. It would make sense for a company to support political policies that align with corporate profits. But every company has people to deal with: personnel, shareholders, employees, customers... The company's continued survival, much less growth, ultimately depends on the people. A political movement's continued survival and growth depends on people as well.

Disney has now decided to scrap plans to move their head of operations to Orlando, costing the area untold amounts, though one estimate I saw was a billion dollars just to get it going. The impact to Orlando would have been huge, and now it won't be. As DeSantis and Disney continue their dispute, real people are being effected. For now, it's just a lack of future investments. When does Disney decide to pull certain investments away, in favor of somewhere else?

Is this related? Not directly. But Disney is trying to cut costs, and the State of Florida is as good a place as any. It didn't used to be.

But nothing I've said is a lie, and this thread really isn't even about the fallout of that law directly, with certain books being banned or students having to deal with answering questions to investigators because their teacher showed them a Disney movie.

Really, there is no opinion of mine in this thread at all, aside from the possible economic impact the feud between DeSantis and Disney may have on the community I was born in. So fuck off with your bullshit. Kthxbai

And Disney is going broke because they are going woke. They're cutting costs and slashing job in California, at their studios, at corporate, and everywhere else because sales are plummeting just like Bud Light sales are plummeting. Blaming DeSantis for their financial catastrophe is laughable because people with minds can see the real reasons they are cutting costs

Speaking of lies: 10 May 2023 The Walt Disney Company announced during Wednesday's earnings call that they made approximately $21.8 billion in revenue during the second quarter of 2023.

Disney revenue for the quarter ending March 31, 2023 was $21.815B, a 13.33% increase year-over-year. Disney revenue for the twelve months ending March 31, 2023 was $86.981B, a 13.52% increase year-over-year.

Oh, and in some categories, Disney is freezing new employment and cutting a few jobs and those were mostly related to the now cancelled project in Flor.

The rest seems to...be all lies.

Oh, the SW hotel was a financial disaster waiting to happen, but there will still be job cuts. And the area will not be getting the construction jobs a new Disney HQ would bring in, aside from the actual jobs it would create here.

I'm not sure why you've chosen this particular hill to die on, as you know damn well opponents of the law have dubbed it "don't say gay". But please die quieter. Less howling.

Florida's population growth is in despite of DeSantis, not because of him. And it's not like he's trying to actually help matters in any productive way.

Yesterday, I got a news alert thingy on my phone that a Latino travel advisory for Florida was announced, because of the new immigration policy DeSantis signed into law. And today, I get an alert that the NAACP has issued a travel advisory now too.

So Latinos & Blacks have been warned not to travel here. Equality Florida issued a travel advisory for LGBTQIA+ in April.

Should be GREAT for the tourism economy huh? Since nobody can safely come here.

Oh, the new immigration bill says "transporting" an illegal immigrant. Yeah, so that has Uber drivers a bit concerned.

The issue with DeSantis is.... even when he is right, he is wrong.

I will explain.

Take the "Don't Sat Gay" bill - Very poorly and deliberately mischaracterized by the left.

We don't want sexuality of any kind being taught to K-3 children. Everyone agrees with that, right?

So if that is happening then how do you solve that>?
1. Go to the individual school boards with SPECIFIC evidence of this happening, and demand that it stops. (And BTW: Tell the Fox News cameraman and field reporter to fuck off and don't give them any interviews. That will keep it from being politicized.
2. If that doesn't work, get one of the state agencies to investigate the SPECIFIC instance of that happening.

That is good governance, and that is what is supposed to happen.

But no.... DeSantis' rubber stamp legislature put together a poorly worded bull (like they ALWAYS do) which is so vague, it stifles discussion of most topics for fear that that it could drift into the definitions provided in the bill.

DeSantis wouldn't know good governance if it shitted on his face. His INLY goal is to "Own The Libs"

Same with this immigration bill. Now Uber drivers need to check the immigration status of someone who BTW (ALREADY PAID FOR THEIR RIDE)
Good governance? Ummm No...

Then of course his using Florida taxpayer money to lure immigrants with NO connection to Florida... East to Florida JUST so he could fly them to Martha's Vineyard. Good governance????

Status: offline 		Calling it "Don't Say Gay" is honest and effective. Children should not be sexualized at school in any way, but there has to be age-appropriate discussion allowed of basic reality. SCOTUS has ruled gay marriage is a Constitutional right in this country, and many couples have made use of that right. Disney animated films featuring a gay character are no more progressive than Snow White & The Seven Dwarves, when Dopey blushes. Or perhaps in Sleeping Beauty, when the princess is awoke by true love's kiss, though consent is never given. The Little Mermaid, where Ariel has to get Prince Eric to kiss her by the deadline. All of these heterosexual displays of affection were fine and not sexualizing children at all, I suppose? Uh huh.

Teachers are now required by law to inform parents if a child comes out as LGBT+. If the kid felt comfortable enough, they woulda done it themselves. The suicide rate among LGBTQ+ kids is already too high for them to be put at more risk.

The law also has banned a children's book about the true story of gay penguins in the SF zoo hatching an egg they were given.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I don't think the GOP quite understands what sort of beasts they've awoken here.

Status: offline 		Hamburger Mary's has filed a lawsuit against the state of Florida, and the new law they say violates their 1st Amendment rights, by cracking down on drag queens.

Hamburger Mary's is a restaraunt that started in 1972 in San Francisco, and features drag queens in their natural habitat, hungover and slinging greasy food for tips.

Status: offline 		Some Chinese citizens have filed a federal lawsuit as well, citing SB264 as discriminatory and unConstitutional. This law, like many here in FL, is set to kick in July 1st. The specific issue is that this law (as written) restricts some US citizens from purchasing real estate in Florida, even with the admiral attempt to forbid foreign investment (and ownership) from China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, and Syria. But as written, the law would prevent naturalized US citizens from those countries from buying real estate as well, and likely citizens of Asian descent.

Cuz racism is alive and well in Florida & the GOP. Don't worry, if DeSatan hasn't discriminated against you specifically yet, there's always next year! I'm sure you're on the list.
