I'm actually against banning guns outright. Guns can be an invaluable tool for protection against large mammals in rural areas, rabid dogs anywhere, and intruders entering your home. Though banning guns may seem like an easier solution, I don't believe it's the right one. I don't believe in murder of any sort, but I also don't think I should be required to hand over my guns because somebody somewhere committed a crime. In 1994, Bill Clinton signed a federal ban on the manufacturing of assault weapons into law, with 77% of Americans and at least 3 former presidents supporting it. That ban ended in 2004 and hasn't been reinstated since, support for it isn't nearly as high now. Banning specific firearms, ammunition, or accessories would garner much more support than an outright ban. Of course, any true and outright ban of firearms would require a Constitutional Amendment to override the Second Amendment, which doesn't seem likely anytime soon, By even suggesting such an extreme (and impossible) measure, ideas that could possibly work to lessen the amount of gun crimes in this country are made less effective. Even mentioning an outright ban is polarizing and forces a side be chosen. In order to accomplish any reduction of gun-relsyed deaths here, it is first necessary to know and understand the laws we already have. Support is much more likely for incremental changes. And murder is illegal here, regardless of how it's done.
