The first boats carrying Chinese goods with 145% tariffs are arriving in LA
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/05/06/business/tariffs-price-increases-shortages-ports

CNN

American consumers are on the cusp of tough choices because of President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Ships now pulling into US harbors from China are the first to be subject to the massive tariffs that America is imposing on most Chinese imports. That means, in a matter of weeks, consumers will face higher prices and shortages of certain items.

Imports from China have fallen dramatically since Trump imposed steep tariffs – particularly since last month, when the tit-for-tat trade war sent the tariff on most Chinese goods up to 145%.

“This week, we’re down about 35% compared to the same time last year, and these cargo ships coming in are the first ones to be attached to the tariffs that were levied against China and other locations last month,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, told CNN Tuesday. “That’s why the cargo volume is so light.”

The drop-off in imports from China on the boats now coming into port is more than 50%, Seroka said. Many importers have canceled previous orders because US businesses aren’t interested in paying the steep tariff, which can more than double the price of Chinese goods.

The Port of LA had expected 80 ships to arrive in May, but 20% of those have been canceled, Seroka said. Customers have already canceled 13 sailings for June.

In 2024, the US trade deficit with China was $295.4 billion, which is equivalent to about 1% of the US economy. US exports to China were $143.5 billion, and imports from China were $438.9 billion, resulting in a trade deficit.

In 2023, China's US exports accounted for approximately 2.9% of its GDP. This percentage has been declining as China has been diversifying its markets and reducing its reliance on the US. In 2024, this figure increased slightly to 2.84%

As I previously said Trump 1.0 2016 tariffs the American Soybean - China, was worth $40 billion. Now its worth $20 billion. £20 billion lost for good for the American farmers. "Art of the deal" China, Brazil and other countries have replaced the american farmer Soybean market for good.

They had a laugh at me on another site when I asked who the fuck needs $40 billion of whatever the fuck a soybean is. Soya milk. Did anyone else not know that or was it just me? To be fair I did know that China is lactose intolerant but I wasn't sure where "beans" came in.

America accounts for less than 3% of China's GDP. You all thought it was 101% right? If China loses 1% it will still hurt China in the short term. It will hurt America even more.

It makes me sad to admit that I am an old man, and I rely on several prescription drugs to stay alive

It makes me even more sad knowing that every single prescription I rely on comes from our slave state enemy

Why do Democrats rally around a slave state, and our deadly enemy?

Pure TDS.

But when President Trump tries to do something about it, the left shrieks about the price of Barbie dolls.

This is about reclaiming the American dream.

Gotta love Scott Jennings. I watch him nightly on Abby Phillips' panel. The most polite and well-mannered brainwashed cult member you can possibly experience. He can spew the most ridiculous nonsense, and some of the hysterical (in the literal sense) leftists that Abby has sometimes on her panel sound shrill in comparison.

Unfortunately, what Scott doesn't realize is that China is absorbing the decrease in demand, selling their goods elsewhere, and otherwise letting US importers pay the tariffs.

Tariff, or no tariff. No one is building a factory in the US to make $20 coffeeemakers you can buy at Walmart. And even if they did, it would be many years in the future.

So this is doing NOTHING to end our reliance on the slave state.

Scott is a cute little trumpy.

All -any prescription drugs in Scotland are free to everyone. In england the maximum you pay for a year is a little more at £100 but that gets you everything no matter the drug.

America-UK made a trade agreement today: for arguments sake lets say we are equal before and most likely after today know. We could be up marginally because if Trump picked the negotiating team, or one of his Peter Navaro types idiots picked, they cannot count. But because the USA and UK import and export equally Trump can call that a win to the world.

By now Peter Navaro is thought insane even by those nutters who surround Trump. Trump had a thing about "tariffs" in his early days. Trump, even right now, still thinks the other country pays them and as a tax to the USA coffers. But Peter Navarro and Trump feed into each other on this stuff. Like a sort of Steve Banon type.

Strategic tariffs have a place. We all have those.

The reason for globalisation is simply down to the great capitalist system's and those who own and runs these companies. Sometimes people use the word neoliberalism - the one we have now in the free world.

USA will cut a deal with China and may use more "strategic Tariff's" - this would be wise. China isnt a democracy ether so if some of their workers are unhappy Xi doesn't give a fuck about the people and protests and can ride out longer. When I looked at the China USA figures even I was surprised it was as GDP low as 3% from China to USA and 1% the other way around.

That isn't a big difference. A lot of American "Services" cannot be sold to China, some can. Same with Tech, some Musk and apple stuff is allowed. China steal everyone's patents everyone knows that. They have effectively caught up in part because of that. They are also an extremely intelligent and educated nation and fund appropriately - yet the Trump admin, Project 2025 heritage foundation, are butchering America's as I type.

USA will run low on some goods soon.

That is not quite achievable in the US as we have a MUCH larger population. There is just no way to pay for it without rationing.

HOWEVER, we could do what the EU does, which is drug re-importation. We could import drugs from Canada, Mexico, AND the EU and have some competition.
Free market capitalism!!!!

But no. The powerful drug lobby lines Republicans pockets and that will never happen.

wickedsdesires -> RE: The first boats carrying Chinese goods with 145% tariffs are arriving in LA (5/8/2025 12:08:14 PM)

Powerful lobbies you have over there. It isn't just the drug company ones either. Incidentally we do buy plenty of your drugs. As you do ours. My guess is that if you are talking about all drugs then it will be India and China who makes more. I have no need to say to someone like you our countries cannot make every drug on earth but I don't think the UK or USA makes enough.

Are you not aware the American Health Care System is the most expensive on earth and by a huge margin and you get fuck all basically, not even free health care and even Russia has that, corrupt and not up to much really.

A few years ago someone from this site visited me from your place - don't ask me why - it was just for a visit. Lovely and very intelligent I half listened to her when she said w she and her when rip husband visited Europe they used to buy their meds in mainland Europe. Not sure how that works but she told me it was a lot cheaper. Insulin was one. Even in england insulin is free In England, insulin is provided free of charge through NHS prescriptions for those with diabetes who need it

The US healthcare system consistently ranks last compared to other wealthy nations in various studies, despite being the highest-spending country on healthcare

Switzerland is the second highest on earth. Oddly their HC system is a little similar too yours but 1000 times better

The BBC has reported on the healthcare systems in both the USA and Switzerland, highlighting differences in cost, access, and outcomes. Switzerland's universal healthcare system, while compulsory, relies on private insurance rather than free state-provided services. Conversely, the US system is characterized by high costs and fragmented specialized care, which have been linked to declines in life expectancy, according to a Columbia University study reported by the BBC.

Reality Check: Does UK spend half as much on health as US? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42950587

If you look at all healthcare spending, external, including treatment funded privately by individuals, the US spent 17.2% of its GDP on healthcare in 2016, compared with 9.7% in the UK. We also have private health care in the UK

But the point I am making health care is universal in all developed countries, except usa. Swiss I explained too.

The BBC reports that the UK spends a substantial amount on healthcare, but not necessarily more than other developed countries. In 2022, public health spending in the UK was around 9.3% of GDP, according to the BBC. While this is higher than countries like Canada (7.9%) and Italy (6.8%), it's less than Germany (10.9%) and France (10.2%). The US, with its private insurance system, stands out as the highest spender, at 14.1% of GDP. The UK's health spending has increased significantly over the past few decades, driven by factors like new treatments and an aging population.

Click this link its give's you the idea https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-50330807 other European countries rank around about where the UK is.

The UK has 2.8 doctors and 7.8 nurses per 1,000 people.
That compares with OECD averages of 3.5 and 8.8 respectively.

It's not a question of who buys whose drugs. Drugs that are made in America are sold overseas for 25% of what they sell the same drugs domestically. England and Scotland can afford to provide free or highly subsidized drugs that they obtain cheaply from American (and other countries) companies, while American drug companies charge Americans 4x as much. The same is true about Canada and Mexico. I can go to Canada and pick up a drug made in the US and pay 1/4th the price.

That is why the drug lobby funnels millions in the pockets of Republican Senators to keep a Re-Importation law from happening.
