WyrdRich -> Where would you go? (7/30/2006 9:06:36 AM)

Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Tornados, Volcanos, Wildfires, Asteroids (can you tell I tend to veg in front of the Discovery channel?)

It seems that no matter where you live, Mama Nature has a means at hand to wipe you out.

So the question is, if you and yours survived a disaster, but the area you call home is devestated, where would you go to start over?

Depends... might stay and rebuild.. start over right here at home. Depends on what disaster accured.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 9:45:12 AM)

Since I really don't feel at "home" anywhere, or, as my father says, "Home is where I hang my hat," if my condo blew up, I'd say good riddance to the ugly furniture, move to Guatemala, or NYC, or Australia, or pretty much anywhere else and go on with life.

Actually, turns out I'd do that if I got bored too.

Yours,

benji

i'm with benji on this one. since my parents have died i don't really call anywhere "home." i mean, i call my apartment that, but i could just as easily pick up and move if i wanted. i'm not attached to living here. i'd probably pick up and move to the least disastrous area and start over, or somewhere more fun than this city. right now i'm just kind of stuck here for undergrad, and then only because i have residency and i need the financial aid :)

I would rebuild...after all, its my home.

That's thought provoking.

Supposing that the *places I'd choose* weren't devastated also..

It would depend partly on the people I care for and wish to stay close to...and their ideas too.

Some remote Scottish Island...has always caught my imagination.

There's a reason for that..... [:D]

Without dragging all the sad details back out again, I lost my home to hurricane rita, and have started over in the same town.

If for some reason I had to pick someplace new, I might try my luck in the pacific northwest.

West Virginia, i have some land there and family.

WyrdRich -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 11:44:09 AM)

I'm sitting within a few miles of San Andreas fault.  If/when it lets go in a big way, I'm outta here.  It isn't the shaking and fires I'm worried about so much as the probability that civilization will take a week off in the aftermath.

St Helens missed me before, we'll be heading for Oregon.

Level -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 11:48:56 AM)

Oregon seems like a beautiful place, Rich. And yeah, I know what you mean about civilization coming unhinged lol.

LotusSong -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 12:48:22 PM)

Since I am limited to any hasty exit by how fast my power chair could go... and then realizing the things I need to get around and sustain my health (like refrigerating my injections)..  I pretty much would simply stay outside and let whatever is coming get me.

Same with a nuclear attack. I would get to ground zero ASAP and be there when it hit... because the living will be those to be pitied: /

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 2:45:38 PM)

Luckily I've had a few homes in my life.  I'd be happy to go back to MD, or Ireland, maybe even NJ.

There's also Canada, England, Australia, Boston, LA, Orlando, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas...a few other places that are on my "possible places to move list."

Austin may be my home for a few years, but we all know it's not where we plan to spend the rest of our lives.

meatcleaver -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 3:41:39 PM)

Well where I am flooding is always taken seriously as I walk up the hill to the river to sit outside my favourite bar. I wouldn't move far, across the border to Germany or down to France. Such things as weather and goelogical factors are pretty boring here and hopefully will remain so.

SirKenin -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 3:59:38 PM)

I would not change where I live for anything in the world (Canada).  It is the number one nation in the world, bar none, and people give up everything just to get here.  I consider Myself very lucky.

meatcleaver -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 4:11:48 PM)

Nothing like a bit of patriotism but if you haven't travelled widely (and I don't know if you have or haven't) one won't know any better than choosing ones country.

I've done Canada coast to coast and north to the Yukon etc, twice and it is a great country and I can understand its reputation but as the art critic Robert Hughes said, great cities and culture appear to have to be built on shit. There isn't a city in Canada that excites and inspires, they are far too civilised.

michaelGA2 -> RE: Where would you go? (7/30/2006 4:13:42 PM)

because Kansas is flat and there's nothing there...LOL
