having been a nursing mother....there is nothing more fulfilling that a infant nursing at the breast.

Now this was back in the late 70's but I was having dinner at a kinda upscale restaurant once...and the baby was very hungry.....So I got a blanket and discretely covered and started nursing.  The waiter came to check on us and asked is there was something wrong because I wasn't eating my dinner...kinda had my hands full....I just pointed and he was so sweet. He cut up my meat for me.

Needless to say.....he got a huge tip that night.

I see no problem with the nature of nursing...if you don't bottle-feed its a have to do thing and sometimes there isn't  a hiding place to do it.

this country is so blasted conservative it's reduculous, it's so afraid people will know that certain things such as breast feeding will become public. and we have the churches to thank for this level of closed-mindedness.

i would never feed a baby in any upsetting,ie noisy crowded setting...
i breast fed all three of my kids..am not a prude..and definately not shy..yet there is a time and a place..for evrything...a quieter bench at the mall..a booth in the rear at a restaurant...
if you simply breastfeed your baby in a" matter of fact way ",then people have no choice but to accept it.
there will always be the woman who scowls at you or will refuse to meet  your eyes..f---em
i minded the obnoxious leers from men the most.

I think society has become way to judgemental, their are people that walk around in skirts that are way to short and shirts that leave nothing to the imaginantion. Some guys walk around their jeans hanging off their asses, but if a women is sitting somewhere privately nursing her child and being discrete about it and covering up while doing it, society has to throw a tantrum about it. I personally dont see the problem with it. The mother is probablly showing less then some women do in their choice of clothing. Not that im going to say what people should and shouldnt wear, im probablly in the group that does show to much skin, im just saying that if society can deal with skin showing with revealing clothing what is the big deal about breast-feeding?? I dont have kids but if I did I would breat-feed in public. I dont eat in the bathroom and i wouldnt ask anyone else to eat in the bathroom, so why should I take my kid to the bathroom to eat? And going all the way out to the car from wherever I may be at is way too much trouble, I think if someone dosen't like it then they dont have to look. The only way its going to bother you is if your paying attention to it, so if it makes you uncomfortable ignore it.

I breast fed for two and a half years... one child... I allowed her to wean herself.

I had people asking me all the time if that was 'appropriate'... the worst one was when it was an obviously pregnant woman who was smoking at the time (my daughter wasn't there but friends and I were talking... the smoker was evesdropping) and I just looked at her, then her cigarette, then her belly... and asked her "how is my choosing the healthiest choice possible for my child any of your concern?"

it's not always the best... but almost always.  Very seldom do I heat stories about breast feed babies who are chronically sick.  I even had to argue with my family and tell them finally if they were going to upset me, which in turn upsets my daughter, about this choice I was simply going to have to not be around them as much 'cause I wasn't going to no breastfeed her until she decided she'd had enough...

I cried when she weaned herself at 2 1/2... I still miss it now and she's nine... I'd be a wet nurse in a heart beat if I could!!

My wife breastfed our baby at our wedding reception, and she describes that as being the last of her shame. <g> Our baby is still nursing at 17 months and she will nurse until she sees fit to stop (although we've warned her she won't be getting any little snacks before her prom date).

When I saw the cover in question, the utter innocuousness appalled me. Mothers saying they had shredded the cover rather than exposing their children to it ... just outrageous (and very, very sad).

LaTigresse -> RE: prude US- breast feed in public (8/5/2006 6:05:12 AM)

I have never understood the uptight american mindset, especially in this aspect. Our country is so fucked up when it comes to the human body and sexuality it is mind boggling. I breastfed both of my children for a multitude of reasons. I am the oldest of six children and my youngest sibling is only a few years older than my oldest child so I definately had very vivid memories of my mother breastfeeding at to me it was the norm. It is the healthiest way for the child, duh! And, having been dirt poor, it was also the least expensive way to feed a child. Being a lazy person, especially at 2AM, soooooooooooooooooo much easier than getting a bottle of formula ready! And again, the primary reason, the healthiest food for the child.

As far as women freaking out because their children seeing boobs, OMG, how pathetic!! I used to say that I would prefer my children be exposed to pornography over slasher movies any day of the week. That statement would just freak people out completely. Once they picked their jaws up off the floor enough to ask why, I simply replied " I can explain why two people want to touch and make love, I cannot explain why someone would find pleasure in taking a chainsaw to other people". No one ever knew how to reply to that.
