What would make someone hate their body so much that they would put themselves at such risk????

I imagine the same person who would go get a black market abortion because it isn't legal?

People do drastic things.  Lipo is relatively expensive from what I gather...well maybe it isn't anymore.  I do know a couple of med students who are going into plastic surgery because of the money...so it must still be outrageous.

Why do we all hate ourselves in general?  I don't think there is one of us who doesn't like some aspect of their self.  Would want it to change if possible.

I know there are aspects I don't like..yet I would never go as far as surgery.

Maybe it's because I've had a lot of medical issues and injuries over the course of my life so far, but I care much more about whether or not things work well than how they look.

It's those fucking Nutri-System commercials and that damn guy hanging around Subway all the time, and that fucking Anna Nicole Smith and, etc!!

And let us not forget the one where the woman is all excited because she is now a size 2!!!  She said she lost 4 dress sizes.. (hmmm 7-8, 5-6, 3-4, 1-2)  The woman wasn't exactly a cow when she started!!! When will this STOP!!  (I do scream at that comercial)

That's ANOTHER thing form the 50's.. I had never heard of a woman's dress size below a 12!!!

I assume you were referring to the test. I took it....these were my results....scars, mommy tummy and 43 year old bewbage and all. Feeling good about yourself comes from inside. I thought it was kind of ironic that the test was in a magazine that revolves around outer beauty and is full of size 2 models.

Love yourself people!

Sure you're smokin', but you don't blow it in everyone's face. "You are confident and incredibly sensual, and you know that feeling sexy isn't about putting on a show," says sex therapist Ava Cadell, Ph.D., author of Dr. Ava Cadell's Stock Market Orgasm. "You can also revel in erotic experiences when you're by yourself rather than waiting for a man to coax your sexuality out of you eventually."

Whether it's enjoying the feeling of stretching your body during a yoga class or walking around unclothed after your shower, you use those little opportunities as an excuse to feel more incredible. "Although no one gets a peek at these private moments, you wind up projecting an authentic sexiness that tells everyone you meet that you're completely comfortable in your skin," says Mary Valentis, Ph.D., coauthor of Romantic Intelligence. "Another by-product of your sexual confidence is that you wind up making men feel more open and at ease with you in bed."

Personally, I think it's just a stupid person "thing". I mean we all have imperfections we don't like, but why don't we go to some hack and get it fixed in some basement. Hmmmm, because most of us aren't stupid.

Sorry, that's what it is, a stupid person doing a stupid action. Most people have the ability to weigh risk versus reward, these people are obviously lacking the ability.

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 4:46:34 PM)

The body shop or bath and body works had an awesome poster several years back (late 90s) that said something to the effect of 200 million people have a body that looks like yours, and only 6 dont... Love Your Body.
I lost it in one of my moves and wonder if any of you know of this poster and where one would find it again.

Actually it is not so incredibly outlandish that someone from a foreign country would trust someone from her own country to perfom a procedure he usually perfoms/has safely done in his country.   It's a horrible situation because the brazillian doctor should never have been taking those risks at home and breaking the law to such a degree.     Unfortunately the doctor was feeding his greed for money, and the girl was feeking her need for a perfect body...  Unfortunately whenever anyone goes under the knife for any reason, there is always the potential for death resulting...  So it is for each of us to decide if anything unnecessary is worth the risk, and unfortunately we can't ask her anymore.    M

I think its good to love yourself.  But I think its also good to realize that if you're not happy with your body, you can change it to a great extend.  You can work out, lose weight, or even have lipsuction, a tummy tuck a breast lift, or whatever.  I dont think theres anything wrong with it, if it matters that much to a person.  But obviously if you're going to go under the knife, it should be done by a reputable surgeon and not in a basement.

mistoferin -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 4:58:16 PM)

I would think it had to be the Body Shop as they have the "Love your Body" rewards club. If not, it may have been something that they got from NOW. Every year they hold a "Love Your body" poster contest.

My objection isn't to the surgery but to having it done in a obviously less than ideal environment. Of course death is always a possibility when undergoing surgery. But I doubt anyone will argue, that the odds of death when surgery is performed in a basement of some house, is going to be way higher than surgery that is being performed in a licensed medical facility that has equipment, blood, trained staff on hand to deal with a emergency. That is why it is a stupid risk.

Theslavetrainer -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 5:03:07 PM)

He was a reputable surgeon. All his clients were friends of friends who passed his name along by word of mouth. If thats not a good reputation I don't know what is. LOL If this poor girl hadn't died, this guy would still be doing these procedures in his basement.

eroticangel -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 5:12:25 PM)

but who in their right mind would go to someone's basement for surgery?????  i don't care if it was God himself performing it...they went to a basement!!!!!!!!!

Theslavetrainer -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 5:23:28 PM)

Years ago, women were going into basements to have abortions done. If one is desperate enough, they will go to any length to acheive what it is they want or feel they need.

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 5:25:07 PM)

I work with a woman who is easily among the top 3 most beautiful in a place of at least 100 women.  She is about 5'4, 100-120lbs, nice little curves, and beautiful face.  This same woman has had about 5 plastic procedures in the last year, including admitting to borrowing money for these surgeries.   Imagine how much good she could do if she had values that extended beyond her looks/appearance?

Yes having surgery in a basement unprepared for casualties is a little dumb; but not if you know 100 people who've done it and are doing just fine...  Not if you want it bad enough and that's the only way you can afford it.  One of my cousins just came back from Dominican republic where she went to have plastic surgery as it is affordable there...  To myself, a bad idea; to her, a step toward the perfect body.   M

eroticangel -> RE: Basement Liposuction Death (8/1/2006 5:27:30 PM)

i understand about abortions and all that was in the past...but i still can't imagine going to a basement for surgery.....sorry.....i mean this is 2006  whyever would you go to a basement .......yes it's cheaper...yes he is a well known surgeon..but, still...ITS A BASEMENT

Lol, i too had a very positive body image, yes i'd love to be rid of the mommy tummy, the inner thigh and back of arm jiggles but not enough to let somebody cut me open. All in all i have learned like you to be comfortable in my skin. Sure i look at some people my age and go WOW i wish i looked that good but i look at many more and go ok i am not that bad.

Plus as you know Scooter wears those hourglass goggles and sees me as fine, you have to love his goggles, lol.

Well, they were licensed to practice in Brazil. [8D]  I am not sure what made them think that they could just disregard the Law of their State though.  Wierd.

No, I didn't realize the quiz was even there actually.
I had meant that people want to look like the girls in Cosmo.  Few realize that even the girls in Cosmo don't look like the girls in Cosmo.
