I have a deep, authoritative voice which causes problems as a submissive.  Essentially, nobody believes me.  I've looked into estrogen therapy but it's very expensive with no real assurances.  I'm not sure exactly where to turn.

There are certianly vocal coaches that could help, but really, I'd consider first going onto one of the sites for transgendered persons, and ask for some advice from the male-to-females on the site. I bet they have a ton of advice on the subject.

LotusSong -> RE: Vocal Pitch In Dominant Males (8/3/2006 8:13:49 PM)

My Slave has a deep voice. I didn't know  HOW deep until one day, when I was seated in a restauraunt.  He walked in with a person he was interviewing for a position in his department. He sat on the other side of a wall where I was.  When he started to talk to the guy, I heard a different persona.  I swear he could vibrate me off my chair with it.

I thought, all that power and he "takes a knee" to me???   I knew what I had and  truly appreciated it :)

I'm not sure exactly where to turn.

Towards the ones who get to know you and don't judge who you are as a person in a relationship based on a stereotype.

I just wish I could do something to more accurately reflect who I am.  (And yes, I've tried helium but the effects are short-lived).

You already are accurately reflecting who you are.  The one who is right for you will get to know YOU as YOU.  Trying to change something as innate to you as your voice seems a bit over the top.  Trying to change it just to attract other people is even worse.

[sm=whiteflag.gif]  OK, before this gets too out of hand, I have a confession to make...I was just kidding around about altering my voice.  It's true that I do have a deep voice and it's also true that when I meet people in the lifestyle they tend to believe I'm Dom just because of the way I sound/look but I was just having a little fun (Sorry, I thought the helium comment would be a dead giveaway).

Cin and LA, I really appreciate your advice (good as always) and I hope this doesn't put me on your shit lists.  I enjoy and respect you both very much.  Just having a little fun.  Sorry.

Btw LA, I agree it would definitely be over-the-top!

Greetings...

Speaking for myself......i am much more interested in WHAT a man has to say.....than the vocal pitch used to say it....i have found that a lot Dominants equate dominance with volume......which just simply has no correlation what so ever.....words of substance gain my ear......the ones that resonate in my soul......not my just my auditory appendages......

Absolutely it does. I use voice to control quite often. I did so with my son, I did so with my last dog and yep, I use the same methods with My girls. The voice only gets raised for an instant IF I need to grab their attention, after that, if it is something serious, the voice is usualy lowered both in volume and pitch.

Usualy used in combo with 'the Domly glare' (tm)[;)]

You can ask helen just how effective that can be [:D]

Edit to add: The voice thang might not work on cats, but the glare does (there are cat psychology reasons why it would, but there you go *g*)

Thank you, such kind words!! I don't have a shit list, so have no fears there. LOL

I thought the helium comment was guite funny actually. The reason I took you seriously is because I've done some research in the importance of voice in social interaction. It's actually a determinant of success in business, and many successful business people have gone to vocal coaches to help improve the impression they make on business associates, customers, and rivals.

It's also a determinant in the dating game was well. And although I haven't turned down the opportunity to get to know a man because he didn't have a low deep voice, I freely admit that during the first phone contact a man's voice will definitely have an impact on whether I feel a real desire to get to know him better.

As humans we depend a lot on information we get from voices, and a great percentage of it is how it's being said.

/lecture (my inner teacher got away with me...)

The domly glare (tm) is the same thing as the teacher look (tm). LOL It's a well-known fact that once a teacher masters the voice and the look, classroom discipline becomes a whole lot easier.

Saying that, you would think it wouldn't work on me, because after 30 years I'm a master (or is that headmistress?) of the voice and the look. But alas, I melt under the domly glare (tm) just as surely as I melt under the domly voice.

The next time I'm around a cat I may have to try it! LOL

A submissive cat will narrow its eyes and look away.

A human who doesn't like cats, tends to narrow their eyes (Ugh horrid cat) and glance away.... ever wondered why a cat will go almost unfailingly to the person who least likes them?

A dominant cat will outstare its rival.

Outstare the cat, it will take a more submissive stance with you [:)]

Interesting article.  My M.O. has always been to speak softly and carry a big stick.

Works for me...

I adore a man who doesn't have to raise his voice to get my attention. Loud voices generally give the impression that the person is out of control, and that alerts my defenses.

Anyone who has done research into leadership knows that a soft, deep, voice will garner the most attention. It works on children, dogs, and apparently on submissives. LOL

However, I am sad to report, it doesn't work on cats. But then again, nothing does.

LOL  I can control my cats by voice and eye contact, believe it or not.  My ruffian of a male cat will flinch and cower if I catch his eye while he's doing something he knows I won't like.  Then again, I've always been a little odd like that.  Animals and I instinctively get along well.  *laughs*  Poor pup complains sometimes that Diego won't even look at him when called.  All I have to do is snap my fingers and the little furry brat comes.

As for voices... I can't say I've ever given it much thought.  The topic has left me curious.

You are so right on that. I use that technique when I want to interact with a cat I've just met, after reading an article about it. I narrow my eyes, and look away, and after a bit it generally works. LOL

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Vocal Pitch In Dominant Males (8/4/2006 3:19:32 PM)

Hmm my method, after being adopted as an Official Cat by many who have crossed my path, is simply to kneel down slowly, hold out my hand and let them come to me to sniff, if they look at me, I blink at them slowly.  Then I don't move at all.  After they've marked me a bit by rubbing their head against me, then I begin to scritch around their ears and ruff.  9 times out of 10, the cat is rolling on the floor belly exposed within 2 minutes.

To borrow a great quote "That which yields is not always weak."

MmakeMme -> RE: Vocal Pitch In Dominant Males (8/4/2006 3:27:38 PM)

My Dom has a very deep voice that I lovvvve, and after all the time we've been together he's only increased the volume once. It was terrifying (because I was the reason he was speaking in exclamation points). I hope to never hear it again.

Although the punishment that followed was pretty darn ok. ~ little smile ~

Being a lifelong cat lover I think your quote is very appropos. I find that, like you, kneeling on the floor and letting them decide to come to me, works well. Most animals take to me surprisingly fast, as do most children. I think I inherited the trait from my mother, a real Pied Piper of animals and children.

Kids and animals seem to think I'm great. Next doors puppy only has to hear my back door go if it is out and its through the railings and bouncing up and down at my feet before I can step out. Many adults however, seem to think I'm big, intimidating and 'scary' [:D]
