i am researching the feasibility of using acrylic for various toy ideas.  i have found numerous sources for acrylic rods, but, i am interested in molded shapes.  i know i have seen sites that have acrylic dildos that only could have been created in a mold.  i am interested in someone else creating the molds and actually creating the objects.  i would want to have various colors available, and, the resulting object would be transparent or translucent.  Right now i need to know basic information like range of shapes that are possible, ballpark pricing, and, availability issues.

What you may have seen may not have been molded acrylic, but molded clear resin. Creating molds for resin isn't very complicated and doesn't require a lot of expensive equipment, nor does using resin. Try Googling for resin products. You might find something that will work.

Some of the products i want to make would be impact toys.  Does resin hold up as well as acrylic for that application?

I'm honestly not sure. I've only seen it used for figurines and decorative objects. I was thinking more along the lines of dildos and such. It probably depends on how thin it would be. Then again, if you plan to make something really thin then an acrylic sheet that you cut into a shape, rather than a poured product would probably be best anyway.

For these toys, i would be more interested in 3D shapes that would be used for insertion and/or impact toys.  To give you an idea, this is one of my current products:  http://www.cometsoftware.com/she/mc_impact_acrylic_stick.htm

Although that item is straight, the purpose of this thread is to explore what is possible and what is available as far as acrylic (or feasible substitute material) for straight or curved toys.  In another thread i am exploring spring steel as a flat stiffener in slappers and other similar toys.

I would e-mail a web page that custom makes thier own rods and see if they will do it for you or if they would put you in touch with the company who actualy makes them...You might have to pay for a short run of them though..adn that could get expensive.

Here's a thought from left field. There is an alternative to molding, although it takes patience. The pics on that page show acrylic rods with over-sized, generally twisted, ends.
When heated, acrylic does become "malleable" in three dimensions. It should be possible to heat the ends of acrylic rods and compress them to increase the diameter of the rod, as well as twisting/smoothing/shaping to the desired configuration. (Think of glass blowing as a parallel)
I've done this with flat sheets so I know this is possible. The only unknown (for me) is a safe source of heat.

Best of luck.

You could probably do it with a blow torch, but you're dealing with something that has such a low melting temp you'd have to really be careful with it....also i'd suggest researching what you're heating up here, and doing it outside, because most plastics when heated release some kind of toxic nasty.

I think for the head ache that would be, learning to do a simple silicone/rubber-latex mold and sanding off the rough edges would be the better option.
