i am looking at making rope floggers and cats, and, currently looking at nylon rope.  i did a lot of research about dyes and have dyed numerous batches of what suppliers claimed to be 100% nylon rope.  Yet, some strands did not take the dye, especially with darker colors.  This would indicate to me that it is not 100% nylon, and, they look like the batches of mixed content ropes i dyed.  i know that some makers mix polyester with the nylon, but, the suppliers i used claim it is 100% nylon.  i have had the same result with different suppliers.  When i contacted these suppliers (specifically non-salespeople) by phone, they seemed dumbfounded that their rope might not be 100% nylon and they didn't have the facilities to test the rope content.  Does anyone have an answer to what "100% nylon rope" really is and/or why some strands of 100% nylon would not take the dye?  For now, i want to keep this discussion focused on nylon rope, as opposed to alternatives to nylon.

"Nylon is a polymer, which is to say a long molecule composed of many identical units, chemically known as polyamide (one brand name is Astron). The form described as Nylon 6,6 is stretch nylon (brand names include Ban-Lon and BriNylon). Nylon 6 is a polycaprolactam (brand names include Akulon, Amilen, Carpolan, Enkalon, Grillon, and Perlon). Nylon 11 is yet another form of nylon (one brand name is Rislan)."

From that definition, it could be that the nylon rope you received is a blend of different types, and they may not accept the dye uniformly.

To further confuse things, the dye you have may not be pure, that is, it may be a blend.

That page is one of a multitude that i read in my research.  The dyes i am using are acid dyes from a reputable source, which is widely acknowledged as the best type to use on nylon.
