popeye1250 -> "Leaders" (8/2/2006 11:08:11 AM)

Just got off the phone a while ago with one of my congressman's staffers talking about an issue.
She listened to me and then told me; "Well the congressman thinks......."
I cut her off in mid sentence and explained to her that we don't send people to Washington to vote "their" conscience or to do what "they" think is right but to vote the way that WE (The People) want them to vote!  (Summertime "Interns!")
Why do congressmen and senators who go to Washington to "serve the People" think they are somehow in positions of "Leadership?"
They're not part of the Management, they're the Hired Help!
I vote for people to go to Washington, D.C. to do what I fucking TELL them to do.
If they don't like it they need to resign.
Your thoughts please.

Well, hopefully, you choose someone whose conscience and thoughts of *rightfulness* are as closely aligned with yours as possible.

When I vote for someone, it's in the hope that they'll do what they *advertised* they'd do.......... not all of it is what I'd choose but sometimes it's the lesser of evils, so to speak.

If it really was a case of * Do what I tell you to*, then there'd have to be a different chap for  every 50 voters or so.........LOL

SirKenin -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 12:21:16 PM)

Have you ever tried to serve 50,000,000 bosses?  Then why should you expect him to?  I am afraid your view of your Congressman/woman is not entirely accurate.

popeye1250 -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 12:52:14 PM)

Kennin, my point is that congressmen and senators are not "Leaders".

pahunkboy -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 12:57:44 PM)

Popeye, make the call again later in the week.

you are right on target.

be polite- make not threats.

but be firm.

also- follow up wour call with a letter-

http://congress.org

keep on contacting them. they work for us peons.

also- mention you are a registered voter whom votes every election.

if necessary- i would volunteer on a 3 way call with you.

--congress works for the people.

period.

pahunkboy -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 12:59:56 PM)

-also ask if the holy one READ the legislation. ask for a correct copy of such. and i do mean the ACUAL bill and not a incorrect version.

most the time they dont even read it.

pahunkboy -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:01:02 PM)

stick to ONE issue per contact

Yes, I know.  And I disagree.  They are leading the country as a collective.  Guiding it if you will.  Taking it on a journey.  Obviously a wise politician takes input from the constituents to best serve the interests of his/her constituency, but the reason for that is not because you are crying him/her a river on the phone, but because only a foolish shepherd would attempt to guide the flock with a blindfold on.

pahunkboy -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:03:52 PM)

Sirkenin, you know nothing about America.

SirKenin -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:09:55 PM)

OOOOOOkkkkkkkkk.

They may not be a *leader* but they put themselves forward and you voted for them, their agenda and the things that they stated were important or what THEY stood for.  Surely if they are rescinding THOSE things, then it's a jolly good reason to berate and badger them.

An MP isn't there as a personal advocate.

I see you can only answer a well thought out answer with rudeness.  He pretty much hit the nail on the head, but it was not what you want to hear.  Pity yoiu can not have an actula conversation, just rude shouting matches.

i know little about america as well (just like SirKenin) but i do understand democracy.
in practical terms there is no way an elected representative can fairly represent the views of each and everyone one of their constituents.
at some point we expect them to thnk and act on our behalf and we cast our vote for the person we expect will most likely carry out their role in a way we would want them to.

Nor do I.  That's a very silly comment.

The meat of the OP, is how to effectively convey ones position to congress.

A democracy is nothing when commen folk do not participate. We need much more of that in the USA.

Corporations have special rights here. Corporations contribute high sums of cash to campaignes in exchange for more special rights.

This entity is at odds with the commen good.

popeye1250 is not a corporation. his deep pockets did not finance a campaigne. he is a walking breathing enitity.

IMO everybody should contact their elected reps  on a consistent bases.

The OP never posted what his item was. But I support his ....

popeye1250 -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:40:50 PM)

I mean look at some drunken bum like Ted Kennedy. Is he a "Leader?"
And I'm from Massachusetts origionally.
Hunk Boy, yes to all the above.

The OP did not post what his item was. Quite right.  *Effectively conveying one's position* isn't quite the same as taking the stance that an elected *person* of YOUR choice is there to do your personal bidding.

Dtesmoac -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:42:46 PM)

In reply to your original point popeye the correct course of action following your logic would be for you to phone up a senator that already relfects your exact view point and tell him the F*#K to vote the way you want and then to pomote to other voters that don't agree with your vote but also have the right to vote in the US to pick up the phone and also tell a like minded politician who they agree with to vote the F*#K way he already was. That way your vote counts and they (the senator you choose to phone) always do what you want.

Of course the whole point behind democrasies is that no-one gets exactly what they want but everyone gets something and no-one gets totally shitted on.

Funny how I can spell shit but not f*#k

I think this expalins my logic.....if not I'll try again.

popeye1250 -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:46:18 PM)

Look at S-2611. That senate "Amnesty" Bill.
It is VERY CLEAR that more than 90% of The American People do not want any part of that yet,...the senate passed it anyway!
It's VERY obvious by that vote alone that those bastards are in the $pockets$ of big corporations who want cheap labor!
In this state anyway we are going to throw senator Lindsey Graham out on his ass in Nov of '08 for that vote alone!
Man! The People are *FURIOUS* at him!

CrappyDom -> RE: "Leaders" (8/2/2006 1:47:13 PM)

BBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz

You lose.

We absolutely elect people to vote they way they believe.  We don't live in a direct democracy, not even in 1776 were we one.

You don't think Bush represents what all of America thinks do you?  I mean most of us are nowwhere near that fucking dumb.
