As an Artist..I paint because it pleases others.

It pleases me to be able to release what is inside me.

All that I draw or paint still belongs to me, it is mine... its from part of me... but I am allowed to offer it to others for them to enjoy... hate... argue against or for... Fot those who do not wish to see or read or look, then they have that freedom and that is respected. If someone loves my work enough then, they will buy it. That is there choice. But its still out there, for all to see... all to touch and possibly 'taste'. If someone wants to use my work... then they can. It is a wonderful form of flattery IMO. To take a piece of work that is not onesown... and rework it... to make something new and wonderful,.... is exciting.

However... to 'claim' it is onesown... or to reproduce it in such a way that may allow others to 'think' and 'percieve' that a person has written it when they have not... To not embellish the correct copyrights... is both disrespectful and illegal.

For anyone else like me who was at first confused by reading this and suspecting it was a lecture directed at somebody, you can solve the riddle by looking in the thread on Better Bottoming. Now it makes perfect sense.

Oh, and after seeing siamsa's post below, I looked for another instance and found it in a thread on Oils, Ointments and Jellies or something like that. Dark~angel could have a thriving business if she applied this skill to helping teachers find plagiarism in student papers.

I'll admit that I occationally violate copywrite in its literalist sense. I use images that aren't mine and that I don't have permision to use. HOWEVER I -only- use these images for personal enjoyment in a non-public space where I never claim that they are mine or that have any right to 'em.

(ex: I make decoupage stuff for myself and occationally for friends.)

That is the -only- kind of copywrite violation I can understand. I wouldn't ever claim that what I used was mine, nor would I use it in a public or commercial setting.

Heck, I won't even take non-public domain art to make icons.

CITE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it safe to assume that your ire was derived and this post motivated at least somewhat from the plagiaristic "Bottoming" post? You did site the original source and author without comment correct?

The practice is becoming more and more pervasive and its practitioners seem to think there is less and less wrong in doing it. Plagiarism is stealing. In the case of art, in word or images, it's stealing something more valuable then many possessions, it's stealing idea - thought. It's the other side of the sword of opportunity presented by the Internet. Kazaa and other such sites may not be as successful if they were referred as "stolen files sites" instead of "sharing sites". Who can argue with the merits of sharing?

Your identifying the "Bottoming" post is to be commended. It the post's source was originally identified it would not have been considered any less. Why post someone else's essay - to establish a image that ultimately you can't maintain? Or would future posts and responses been similarly 'borrowed' and shared?

Thanks for the attention you brought to this problem.

So far I have seen three cases where Angel has provided copyright informtaion on another individuals post.
This individual needs to start taking some responsibility for their posts and stop their plagaristic activities

*hugs perverse with permission* I guess its a fine line...But You are making something from yourself... even if You use part of something that isnt Yours. Its still from Your heart. Therefore... it is yours.(IMO)

Thank you. I'm studying to be a librarian, so copywrite issues are pretty big to me.I know I'm not perfect, though.

Angel,
i just want to say i have the utmost respect for artists. To me they have such an incredible talent to be able to express their feelings through their drawings. People have alot of misconceptions in regards to copyright and art posted on the net. i know some feel like they are doing the artist a service by giving the artist publicity. i know most artists totally disagree with that. i also know that many dislike the manipulation of their art.

i can understand your feelings to some extent and wish you the best. There are a number of organizations that are banding together in an effort to protect their copyrights. If you need some further information, i would love to share it with you.

Copyright has become almost meaningless with the advent of the net. There are a whole lot of people out there who do not think it is wrong, and I know there are plenty out there who download bootlegged albums etc., so -- excuse me while I walk into your house and raid your refrigerator, and help myself to some jewelry, maybe that nice stereo system you have. Because it's the same thing

It's hard enough to sell an idea, a book, a painting, a song to those producers/publishers/galleries that would or might buy it. How presumptous for people to just take it - without a thought given to the amount of work it took to create it. I wonder that someone could 'enjoy' something that cost the artist his or her rent check, and took months or even years to create. Most of us do not make the kind of income a Stephen King enjoys. But even if we did, that's still income that these people stole.
