With permission from Gauge....here is a very edited converation we just had about a current Yahoo hacker. He will follow the post with his permissions:

F I hate to bother you right now but I need Yahoo Geek assistance.
G Since I am a Yahoo geek I guess I can help :)
F okey.....earlier this week______got her yahoo hacked while she was on it.....we were also chatting at the time
F changed her password, threatened her ect........tried to send me a file which I know better than to accept
F this person now have everyone on her contact list, msg me and others on her list
F Broke into one of our conversations and tried to force a file though...I deleted all contact info on ______ and have her on ignore
F Question is you think he has all our contact lists now??? should we delete our account in full.
not remember or auto login
G My answer would be a firm yes. Since you do not know what originated the attack I would shut down all of your Yahoo accounts (everyone effected) and start new ones
G Oh shit
G She has a keystroke logger
F Would it be safe..... to safe my contact list???
F yeah thats what I am figuring too
F she just uses the free virus scanners
G Sure it would. But you better manually add all the contacts back in, do not migrate the files
F Thats what I meant to do
G Which ones does she use?\
F I am not postive
F She had d/l a new free one when this happened so it would be up to date
G OK... here is what she should do
F We here are sharing the purchase of the full MacAfee suite this week
G Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan
G Have her do the full scan there... it is an online scan
F Do you mind if I pass this converation on to ppl I know....or could you post a off topic on this or something?
G Not at all... please do in fact

F I knew I could ask you...I know most of what you said...but needed confirmation.
F especially about the contact list
G The other thing she should do is to download a reliable trojan remover... this might cost a little, but this will make sure her system is clean
G The hacker got in there somehow and my guess is a trojan
F Mine too that is what I was thinking and the keystrocking
F She is at work right now....and can get CM mail but not access yahoo
G Tell her to get Adaware, Spybot Search And Destroy and Spyware blaster... have her update all of them and do the scans
F So I am going to cut and paste this with all personal information and not revelant edited out
F now quick question
F I use AOL safety and security center and it seems to catch most of it Is that a good or bad thing since it AOL although I am getting the suite.
G AOL's stuff is OK... not the best but it will work
F Oh I know at least it macafee powered....would you suggest a better internet protection suite?
F other than macAfee?
F the buy in the store variety
G AVG Pro is very good. Norton is OK also. I never had much faith in Mcafee
G Oh... tell her to get a firewall if she doesnt have one already
F Oh I was going to do that....thats what catches my stuff
F tho its isnt the pro but that is fixing to change
G ZoneAlarm free is decent... a bit of a pain at first but good enough
F okay
G I take it she has broadband?
F but you think that Trend online scan will find the torjan? so would the spy program
F No dialup
G Ahhhh... OK
G It might if she has one
F I think we all have dialup...how sad
G OK... a few other things... after she gets all of this done, tell her to make sure she has a good backup of her system in case this idiot gets in again. Also warn her about going to unknown sites... they can be nasty as shit. I went to one the other day and I got 6 or 7 virus alerts right off the bat

If I ever get across the pond, you are going to get a sound thrashing.

I think panda is the best firewall and virus cleaner, and it is cheap.  I have tried many but Panda is the best.

thats odd- i have had a hell of a time with yahoo messenger.   i hate that each time i re-install it i must redo all the settings galore- and of course IT wants me to look at music- its crap. double checks on roputine requests.

im no fan of aol.

version 2.5 software had it built in that- no other ISP could function- only aol.

im beginnning to wonder if that net neutrality kick i was on last week is a waste of time

Ariel I have taken all precautions I can and deleted contacts re this...and not accepted any files and done a through cleaning of my system...I would still suggest you change your password, if we msg I will clearly identify myself with something we both know this goes for anyone on my yahoo and would ask the same of anyone else.

I can vouch for all the software, virus-scans, & anti-spywares mentioned in that conversation.  I use every one of them (except McAfee) and, though my computer picks up a lot of crap that slows it down, running those gets it zipping along again.

Another one I really like and can vouch for and it's FREE is "CrapCleaner".  I have found that after I use it, my AdAware is empty.

Whats the question?

You all DO know that a keystroker needs to be placed on a computer?

i dun think thats something that can be done remotely or via a virus.

Clean yer computer out.  Reformat if you have too.

A keystroke logger is a program. It can be loaded onto your computer in many ways. Just go to an unknown website and you may get more than you have bargained for. While keystroke loggers are not a virus in the true sense of the word they are programs that compromise the safety of your information stored on your computer. They can be remotely accessed by an outside computer and they can read everything you have typed... passwords, personal IM's or chats, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers and so on.

It is good advice to clean the computer of things like this, but reformatting should always be a last resort. The point of repairing a computer is to salvage the information stored on it and not to shred it and start over. Too often 'IT professionals' resort to reformatting because it is cheaper for their customers to have to restore their information then it is to actually pay someone to take the time needed to fix the problem... but most issues can be fixed if you have the money or time to put into it.

Oh... and some advice to everyone... do system backups of critical information. Either do them on a DVD or CD, but back up the stuff that would make you cry if you lost. I learned a valuable lesson recently regarding backups and I have been faithful in doing them ever since.

Be careful out there...
