It certainly sounds like he will return to behaving in a caring manner, right before he again pushes you away. Hoping doesn't make it so. I don't think it's his way of keeping you on your toes either. Mind games like that are not indicative of a loving, fulfilling relationship, in my opinion.

It's in your control to continue in this situation. It sounds like he is battling his own feelings, so I would encourage you to discuss your feelings openly with him.

I wanted to stop in for a second to say that the relationship is ended, at my request. Advice is, indeed, what we seek when we already know the answer. Fortunately, I had on my hiking boots and found that bus stop I missed back there a ways.
