I do not think the chief concern is environmentally helpful.  Remember, this is a government that ran away from Kyoto with their tail between their legs.  This is all about preserving your way of life I think.

Dear Reader,

Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon.  Damn, what a day.

According to the Aztec calendar, Doomsday is December 21, 2012

Based on what happened to their civilization, culture and language, I'd say they were off by about 500 years.......

SA aside, didn't that date mark the end of the third age in their paradigm and the beginning of the fourth rather than the destruction of the world?

Theslavetrainer -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/6/2006 3:27:47 PM)

Actually, they did predicted the demise of their own civilization. The 2012 prediction is a kind of "birth of a new world" prediction. They also had a myth that this "rebirth" has happened before in earths history.

I always wondered if the Aztecs just decided they were tired of carving stone calendars. I can imagine some stone cutter saying " Enough already! We can start carving again around 2000 and still be ahead. "

The hydrogen option is still too energy intensive to use. And pretty dangerous. New methods are coming about though.

Looks more and more like electricity is the way to go.

EnglishDomNW -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/7/2006 1:39:27 PM)

Blair just announced here that Britain will build more and more nuclear power stations, something that reverses his original stance.

I drive a solar powered car from Germany, needs no petrol, no electricity, is totally eco-friendly and can run at a max of 50mph on a sunny day.

The only problem is it explodes killing you instantly if a cloud goes by.

hahahahaha.  Smart ass.  Too funny.

I kind of think technology will save the day on this one. There are literally dozens of alternative solutions to the energy problem if we stop wasting money on bullshit wars and start investing in R&D. Just like the good old days, you know?

Hemp Oil
Corn Oil
Hydrogen
Windpower
Solar
Hydroelecric energy

There's even some nutter with well-placed friends that has some gizmo that will improve fuel economy in the old combusition engine. Could be true.

A lot of the basic technology to cut energy/oil use has been around for decades. Better building designs and codes, more efficient appliances. Better insulation and house/building design could make huge cuts in energy use. But the up front cost is never thought past, to the long term savings that you get back every day. The politicians have continually failed to think and plan ahead. Us voters are apt to oust the ones that do.

I've noticed so many little things in other countries, that are used to cut energy consumption. They add up.

Peak oil isn't the idea that oil suddenly runs out. It gets harder to find, lesser quality, more expensive. Instituting a wide range of low tech, not too expensive things across the land would put that decline off for longer. More time to prepare and adapt.

It's the fact that we do almost nothing about it that is frightening. It will come as a shock and a huge mess the longer we do nothing.

StrongButKind -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/7/2006 10:36:06 PM)

Functionally, Hydrogen is not a fuel source, it is an energy storage and delivery mechanism. The majority is tied up in compounds; more energy is created isolating than is produced by then burning it. But if that energy is cleaner (e.g. nuclear) than fossil fuels, it can have a benefit. In particular, many critics of fusion point out the cost, size, and dangerousness of a plant may be prohibitive could use hydrogen. A fusion plant on an island could split water, and the resulting hydrogen could be shipped as fuel. But this is a long, long way off. If it happens at all.

Liquid natural gas faces similar problems for shipping. Though hydrogen is even harder.
I think you mean fission not fusion. Fusion would be great. A lot yet to be discovered. As far as regular nuclear plants go, uranium is a scarcer fuel than oil. It is more powerful, but more expensive all along the line. The waste is deadly, but at least tightly contained and controlable, not just spewed out all over the place. Uranium is going up in price, and the facilities are limited.
If done right, nuclear is fairly safe. Too often corners are cut. Some US plants were built with mobbed up contractors. Scams in cost and materials quality happened. Poorer countries build cheaper less safe models. And waste storage is a real nightmare. But not impossible.

I have seen some pictures of it and read a little bit about it.  There is hope yet.

Only as long as you limit your study to looking at pictures and reading a little bit about it.

The problem isn't new. Democrats had a plan up and running 30 years ago but the Republican's tore it apart as they blindly tear everything constructive apart.

Try looking at the larger picture.  America is deeply in debt, our houses are mortgaged to the hilt, and high interest rates are about to pummel us.

So we have some 100+million cars on the road, none of which burn any of the new fuels.  We have how many gas stations equipped only to pump gas, we have suburbs designed only for those with cars, and the list goes on.  Nobody is going to loan us the money, certainly not at cheap rates for people to buy brand new cars, for gas stations to retool, and for people to suddenly live close to where the work.

Even if someone discovered a cheap way of burning water we would be facing a crisis and the truth is much uglier.  We will not see the gradual rise in oil prices because oil demand is growing at an accelerated rate due to the surging economies of China, India, and other third world nations.

Welcome to hell and please thank our Republican ushers as you take your seats, it is going to be a brutal ugly ride.

SirKenin -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/8/2006 5:21:27 PM)

Once again, Crappy with the Republican bashing.  I might not be a Republican or a Democrat, but this consistent nonsensical theme eradicates all credibility from your posts in My eyes.  To Me it just seems like you have an agenda and you are on a vendetta...  A bender if you will.  Cut the crap out of your posts and maybe I will be more inclined to view them favourably.

CrappyDom -> RE: Again. Peak oil! Google it. (8/8/2006 7:42:03 PM)

I am sorry that Republicans are allergic to facts, but for most of the world, they aren't looked upon so harshly.   Another thing common in Republican is an inability to respond to intelligent debate with anything other than insults.

So, when you are ready to respond to the points I raised, I look forward to an actual discussion.
