I need some help with an issue regarding my band and if you all would take a moment to register your votes and thoughts it would be highly appreciated. Let me explain. Saturday night we played at a church festival (it was a non-paying gig but a gig just the same) and some feedback came to us with regards to our clothes and out lack of a 'uniform image' it was observed that 'we each looked like we wanted to be a part of another band.' Let me run down what we wore for the evening. Our one guitarist wore a retro Buddy Holly look with thick framed glasses and a yellow checked sweater. Our other guitarist wore a T-shirt and shorts with flip-flops. Our drummer wore shorts with a casual Polo type shirt. Our singer wore a black Hawaiian shirt with yellow flowers on it and shorts. I wore my black shirt, jeans, sneakers and a black vest with black wrist bands. Personally, I don't put much stock in fashion but that is me and that will always be me. Yes, I can dress up if I so desire but I don't have the call to do it often. The comments we got sort of put me off in a rather sour way because although I wanted a certain look (and from the feedback I was the only one that didn't get critiqued harshly) I just do not put that much importance on outward appearence in a band context. Please good folks of Collarme, help open my eyes to how you, as an audience member, would place importance to just how a band would dress. This is something that I would like to settle in my own mind. Thanks in advance.

Gauge, if the music is good enough, few will care about the clothing. The only band I can think of where clothing made an impression on me is KISS, but even then, if I didn't like the music, the "show" wouldn't have held my interest long.

It depends. In all actuality, it really shouldn't matter, but if they look like hipsters, I usually assume that the local bands are gonna be terrible. Sometimes I'm proved wrong, fortunately.

I think it presents a clearer, more cohesive image of the band if all members dress in a manner that is at least "similar" to one another. Identical, or same style but different colors is way too boy band for me, but it sounds like your guys were all over the place with their styles.

I liked some of the British Invasion bands looks back in the day - The Kinks hunting jackets, the Beatles collarless suit jackets. The uniform look quickly faded away, but...these days The Hives have revived the matching outfits style, along with some great rock and roll.

The church group aside, people only care about the clothes if the band sucks. You see well-known bands all the time where each member looks like he came from a completely different planet than the rest of the band. But it works, because people like the music. Unless of course a band member is just ripped....then I'd prefer to see him play shirtless. [;)]

I would think that the music is the most important, and that maybe you guys don't have to be out of a fashion magazine, or down with the hip fashions of today.... but I would think it best that the music be enjoyed without the concert-goers thinking to themselves about how you guys don't match, or how poorly dressed someone may have been, etc. Giving the audience reason to focus on something other than your music (unless, like Kiss you are calling for it to be noticed), in my opinion could detract from your music. If unusual presentation (like Kiss), or mismatched presentation (like your bad as you say) is going to exist it should probably have a positive reaction from the audience... otherwise it could reflect negatively on your music. That's my opinion anyway, but perhaps gauge your image from those who saw you play.... if it wasn't all positive, perhaps some tweaking couldn't hurt. By the way... what you wore sounds the most appropriate to me.

It wouldn't hurt to tweak our 'image' a bit in order not to be a distraction. I do have to tell you though, our rhythm guitarist with the Buddy Holly look was awesome. He is a total nutcase. I have a fairly decent pic that I will post on my profile of it. I am also adding a shot of me playing the bass at the show also.

Gauge, for me personally it's all about the music unless of course its a reallllllly hot chick[:D]. In all seriousness, if the music is great I could give a shit what the performers look like at all, I just want to let the music take me along for the ride. The Buddy Holly look does sound fun but I have to buck the tide and say that the bands of old that wore the matching uniforms just bugged the hell out of me unless it was BigBand music in suits behind their matching podiums.

ild say there should be a certain "show business look", tho not all matching. it makes you a step up from the garage. be unique but be your own style. its kinda like how food is served with parsley- garnishments. if the buddy holly look works great. if not just spiff up- i know a dude that plays hes from the days of the big band era. the stuff he weres you wont see people at the grocery store in. hes in his 70s and played last year. tho- it wont make up for bad music,...... it just wont.
