meatcleaver; That's a mouthful. I am in one of those rare neighborhoods where most of the neighbors know each other. This is a home, and money can't buy a home, only a house to have it at. My house is small, only two bathrooms and no central AC (we got some kickass window units though). The people around here are what makes the difference, and if I were to hit the lottery I would not move, but I bet the house would get a bit bigger.... I would also pay to have all the yard work done for this aging couple across the street. They make noises about moving into a condo every now and then and I don't want to see them go. I would buy alot better car, much older than my ol '87. Actually my house is probably worth considerably more than $60,000, but so is every other house. In fact we have a real advantage here, the assholes have mortgaged themselves out of the neighborhood. The people who have moved out can't sell because they overmortgaged, got screwed up with probate or other things. Down the street there is a house with about $100,000 more in liens than it is worth. Over to the left is one where the heirs lost the deed. Actually I want to buy that one. Another has been taken and become a HUD house, the only one around. What do we do ? We park in their driveways for free. Sometimes when I have a party the street can get pretty parked up. Nobody complains, having cars and trucks (almost a boat at one time ! ) in the drive makes the house look occupied and cuts down the potential for vandalism. This one house, if I knew someone who was homeless I would break in the back, change the lock on the front and tell them just live there. The guy went out of state, either forged, or a Woman forged his Wife's signature and it is going to be a long long time before the place is sold. The lienholders aren't giving up on it yet though because the area has potential. My grill is three feet from my wood house (has AL siding though), there is a pot plant around here, but I won't say where, I have a loud stereo and sometimes party guests sleep on the front lawn. Sometime we go outside and become a bunch of porch monkeys and drink beer, have loud discussions at times and, well not only do the neighbors not complain, they come over and join in. We all have front porches except one, who decided to close it in. Now to me that is home, this is a neighborhood. I could go buy a suburban 'ivory tower' but I don't want it. If I move I want rural. I would want to gain self sufficiency. Now that is true wealth. If you can heat, cool and feed yourself on your own, and protect yourself, that is true wealth. I'm off (but you knew that) , and later I am going to get a ten cent pizza and drink it with the beer I spent about twelve cents on. Kinda cuts into that sixty-two cents I made today. T
