My wife decided she wanted a puppy. She took Me to see this mutt and did the whole routine. The puppy dog eyes. The ooohs and ahhhs. Handing the dog to Me. Telling Me how cute it was and how bad she wanted it. You know. The whole deal. Well, it was cute. Really cute. I admit, I melted, so we brought the damn thing home. Well. What a fucking nightmare. The thing shits and pees all over the place. You take it out to do it's thing, it sits there and does nothing for 20 minutes. You bring him back in and he pisses right in front of you. He just loves to shit in the kitchen. We have come out in the morning to be greated by as much as five piles of shit and four puddles of pee. Where the hell does it all come from? We do not feed him before bed. What gives? He has eaten most of our shoes. I have an 80 dollar pair of dress shoes that he is working on right now. My $90 runners have been chewed. Half of My wife's underwear. One of her purses. Some of her books have been shredded. The baseboard by the front door. The daybed in the livingroom. He used to get into My office and shred all My papers, disks and whatever else he could reach. My office is a disaster area as it is. He turned it into a complete write off in the matter of half an hour. I put him in the bathroom for a time out because we do not have a crate and he starts howling and screaming like you are beating him. So the damn cops show up at our door. The next day the SPCA shows up. They left a nice little note that I was abandoning the animals and that if I did not call within 24 hours they would start legal action to get the pets removed. I called her up and lost it. She called back and we had a nice chat at which time I explained to her what had happened. She told Me that everything I was doing was perfectly acceptable and recommended that I go have a chat with the neighbor... while telling Me all about her puppy. Yesterday the dog figured out how to get up on the couch. Great. Now today he dug My wallet out of My shorts, chewed it to pieces and destroyed My drivers license and other ID. I was furious. Considering that by rights the dog is both of ours, and thus we have equal say and must be in agreement, I have talked to My wife about getting rid of this dog, but she is really attached to him. Probably because I am the one that looks after him. She says if the dog goes she goes. Well. Now what the hell do I do? I am losing My mind. I am going to take this dog to the hotdog factory. How do I stop this wanton destruction?

It IS gross!! It is damn disgusting. Let Me tell you another story that you will surely enjoy. Well, two stories. We bought a huge bag of cat litter at the supermarket and set it beside one of the kitty litter boxes until we could figure out what to do with it. We then went out to pick up some more stuff. When we came back the fucking dog had ripped apart the bag of kitty litter and spread it all over the livingroom in such a way that we could not see the livingroom floor. In some places it was two inches deep. It took three of us an hour and a half to clean up the mess. Sooo. The next day I had to take her brother back home. We agreed that the best thing to do was to keep the dog in the bathroom while we went so he would not cause any more destruction while we were gone. I came home and I could hear him barking and howling from the driveway. Like... Loud. So I went in to rescue him. He had smeared dog shit from one end of the bathroom to the other. The entire floor was covered in shit. He even got some on the bathtub. I was completely disgusted. It was everywhere. Of course you try to clean it up and it smears. I was so upset, I wanted to get rid of him right then and there. He also eats kitty litter. For some reason he will go into the litter box and drag kitty poop all over the floor. When he gets bored he eats it. Every day without fail I have to sweep up kitty litter. I am truly at wits end. I desperately need help with this dog. I think now it is painfully obvious why. I am not a dog trainer. I love animals with all My heart, but this is too much even for Me. What do I do?

I don't know, that dog sounds retarded. It sounds like you need to get that spray and start using it. After they make a mess, you clean it up then spray it on the area. Do you crate the puppy at night and when you are away from home? It sounds like you should maybe look into crate training. And having your wife do 50% of the dog care, it's only fair.

When I first got my puppy he was quite a bit like that. I cage trained him so when I go away he goes into the cage. He used to go in at night, but he can behave now. He did the whole going outside and then coming in the house to go to the bathroom thing at first too. So I got him on a schedule I started taking him out every two hours, when he went to the bathroom outside he got rewarded and when he came in and went to the bathroom on the floor he got his nose rubbed in it and spanked. He learned to let me know when he has to go to the bathroom now. I got him a wide variety of toys so that he wouldn't rip my school books or homework up anymore when he did he got spanked and put in the cage. I rewarded him when he was good and he still gets sent to the cage to this day when he's bad. He used to howl n stuff when I put him in the cage like I was beating him but I just started putting him in for short periods of time while I was home and then increasing it to a little bit longer and then leaving him alone during the day in the cage. They say that you need to get a cage that will fit the size of your dog if it's too big they will go to the bathroom inside of the cage. Thus far it's worked for me... Also try looking somethings up on the net. Search for the dog whisperer too he usually has some good ideas for training and such. I also know that I had to give my dog a lot of exercise two walks a day minimum to settle him down a bit so that is our routine now one walk in the morning one walk at night.. You mentioned runners if you run take the dog with you and get your wife actively involved.

I would highly suggest getting some obedience training. Owning a dog is not like owning a cat. They have to be trained, and you have to be strict about it until the dog gets it. There is a right way and a wrong way to train an animal. I have owned four dogs and I had to train them all and it did take considerable time, but they all ended up being great dogs. Alternately I worked for a lady who was not consistant with her training with her very expensive poodles, she did not punish them appropriately when they were bad. She did not make them walk nice on a leash. She would not adhere to specific feeding/walking/training time schedules with the dogs. As a result the dogs were worthless pets and her lovely mansion had to have all the carpets ripped up because she just let them pee everywhere. It was disgusting. I would also suggest making sure to LOCK UP what you do not want chewed, and providing plenty of tasty chew toys. The book I used to learn how to train our dogs was Training Your Dog, The Step-by-Step Manual by Joachim Volhard and Gail Tamases Fisher. It was excellent for us. However, training a dog is a lot of work. If you cannot do the work and be consistent, then you should not have a dog. You should tell that to your wife, and I am sure if you called the SPCA they would fully agree with you (and possibly even threaten her to legally take the dog from her if she cannot handle the responsability of owning one :) ).

Crate Training.and clicker training. Dogs do not understand words nd a puppy needs it’s space. Here is what you do. A crate is a large enough wire cage of an appropriate size for your dog. You can get them at the PetSmart/Petco places. Put in a nice bedding.. toys.. food and water. When you leave him alone, you put him in there. Click the clicker and give him a treat as you close the cage door. This gives him his territory. Dogs are den animals. Dogs are very reluctant to mess in his cage. When you come home you, you lead him out to the back yard to do his business. He’s a puppy..he’s going to play and run a bit.. Just stand there and don’t say a word. The only acknowledgement is when he finally “goes”. Keep your clicker handy and when he does ANYthing you like, you click and treat. Dogs learn very quickly that the clicker means “good!” This will save you frustration and your furniture. If it’s too much trouble.. by all means. Get rid of the dog! It deserves better than to be yelled at for being what he is. It’s no fun for either of you. You may want to consider adopting a mature dog. They are usually potty trained and have some obedience training under their belt.

Crating your dog will help you out a lot, but make sure you give your dog something to do while it's in the crate. Filling a Kong with peanutbutter works really well. Matthew Margolis is a great dog trainer who used to have a Sunday or Saturday show on PBS (I think). He's got books and videos out that would probably help. He's a bit nutty, but he gets the job done, and the way he shows you how to train your dog is really fun. =) Any puppy obedience class you go to will probably spend the first one or two sessions focusing on problem puppy behaviours like barking, chewing, and how to housebreak your dog. Plus, they usually tire your dog out, especially if you take your dog for a long walk afterwards. There are a lot of trainers with different methods out there, so make sure you do your reasearch and find one that you like.

Very interesting stuff. First stop tomorrow after My wife gets off work is to get a cage. And a clicker, whatever the hell that is. I am afraid that I am completely in the dark there. Oh, we tried the doggy treat thing. They give him the trots. As it turns out, boxers have a very sensitive stomach. This one is a boxer/mastiff cross. He is going to be huge. We have talked about dog training classes at Petsmart. I wonder if they would do us any good?? Or whether we should just get a book.

Ok here you go---its called crate training, (this is a quick response so if someone has said this--sorry)---don't get one so large that he can poop and still have a place to lay down--and NO dog beds in there yet---plan to take him out on schedule 4 times a day, the same schedule---if he needs more he will let you know. Stay on schedule, at least two of those right after he eats. Get chew toys, it sounds like his breed is a chewer--and do NOT get chew toys that resemble anything you have--like shoes, feet, cats, etc---get the ones that look like toys--and don't worry if he eats them, they are ok---just dont get the squeaker kind as they have that metal thingy. Do NOT use the crate as punishment, he will get confused between that and his home-- then get some good dog odor remover for the kitchen floor--I guarantee you will have a good dog in 3 weeks. Oh and if he is the high strung variety, you will have to walk him at least 4 times a week to keep the energy level down. Feel free to contact Me off boards for any other advice. There is no such thing as a bad dog, its bad training.

Ken, A clicker is what they used to call a "cricket" in the old days. a little plastic box with a metal strip that clicks when you press it. They have them at www.sitstay.com.nThey now have the kind that have yellow button onthemThose are much easier to use. As far as treats- use CharlieBears. I took a dog training class a couple years ago to train my dogs as service animals. One thing I learned and was surprised by is that a dog needs a JOB. I had a mutt I rescued that was hyper as hell. I didn't think he'd ever amount to anything. I was traing my yellow lab and this little guy sat by her and started to do the behaviours I was training her to do before she got it. I started to concentrate on him and trained HIM! This guy is like a little marine..very discaplined now.. and if I drop somthing- he'll come out of a dead sleep to find the "thing that doesn't look right" and hand it to me. I misplace my cell phone frequently..the first thing I taught him was that when he hears my phone.. he's to find it and bring it to me. If you have the motivtion and time.. you can really make this fun for both of you. PetSmart has obediance training using the clicker.

We no longer use crates because they no longer need them, they're such good dogs. :)

Go with the classes. You will have an instuctor and sometimes it's just easier to see it done than read it. They ran a out $90 for 10 weeks if I remember correctly. What kind of dog is it?

It sounds like he is quite young therefor will have even more naughty puppy energy and more of a handful. Crate him in a very large crate when you cannot be with him. As soon as you take him out of the crate take him outdoors, keep him out there until he takes care of his potty business. Dog treats are not necessary for rewards, lots of praise is. Be patient, he is young and is only capable of so much. Many large breeds do not calm down until around 18 months old, keep things you do not want him to chew out of his reach. And yes, some obedience classes to train you and your wife would be excellent[:D]. Please take no offense, its the dog trainer/lover in me.
