LM awoke early; his slave was sleeping by his side. She had been sick all day but he was not worried it was the flu season. She had not slept well that night so he let her sleep as he quietly arose from the bed and proceeded to get ready for work. After dressing and having coffee he left for the 20-minute drive to his office.
He was almost there when a feeling came over him he could not place what was wrong he just knew something was wrong! When he got to work the feeling grew and grew until he quietly left work and started back home with every mile that he drove on the way home the feeling of urgency grew.
He pulled into the drive way as his children were getting on the school bus his oldest daughter ran to him and gave him a hug saying “mom is still sleeping we let her sleep.” He kissed her one the top of the head and then hurried her off to the bus and went inside.
He went to the bedroom and Dee was still asleep this wasn’t right she had been sick before but never like this. He gently shook her and her eyes opened she peered at him thru glazed eyes and tried to smile he helped her from the bed and told her to get dressed they were going to the DR.
As she tried to get dressed she was getting sick and dizzy so he helper her dress and then escorted her to the car and went to the doctors office. They lived in the country and the Dr was 20 miles away when they arrived he escorted her into the office only to be told that they were unavailable to see her for about two hours. He was known for his patience when it came to the health and safety of his family. So when he looked into the receptionist’s eyes he made sure she was looking back and quietly almost in a whisper said “ The Dr will see her now!” the lady took an almost unperceived step back and tried to look into those eyes but was unable to. She spoke the words “Yes Sir” and went to get the Doctor
As the Dr approached he looked at Dee and then placed a hand on her forehead he smiled and took them to the exam room after a quick exam he told “ she has the flu nothing to worry about she is a health 37 year old lady. She needs rest and fluids is all.
He escorted her back to the car and headed home but that feeling returned deep in his stomach and he knew something was wrong. He looked at Dee who was napping in the reclined seat next to him and drove right past the turn to his home and sped to the local hospital. When he arrived she was sleeping and when he tried to wake her up she just barley was conscious I took her in his arms and carried her into the ER he was met by a nurse who quickly gave some orders to an orderly and a gurney was brought to him as he headed thru the doors.
The room they took Dee to was small and he was asked to leave so they could exam her but instead he quietly stepped back into the corner out of the way and allowed them to do their jobs
Fear came over him as the Dr looked at him and said “I think she has spinal meningitis but we are unable to verify that we are fling her to a better equipped hospital. She was in a full coma now and he sat beside her and in one brief instance she woke up and looked at him she smiled mouthed the words I love you and laid back down and closed her eyes.
The ambulance arrived and told them the chopper was unavailable and they would have to transport her by ground then she was off to a bigger hospital.
LM sat there in disbelief, his mind was racing with all the thoughts he had been afraid to confront during the past hours he now knew this was serious. He had to go pick up the kids and take them to a friend’s home. With this done he sped off to the hospital 75 miles away
Upon arrival at the new hospital he was greeted by the ER nurse and let to a small room where he was told the DR. will be with you shortly after what seemed like an eternity the Dr came in and asked if he was Dee’s husband and stated that Dee is a very sick lady that it is now confirmed she has spinal meningitis and he stated that he had 3 cases in the last 4 months they were all fatal and he believed hers to be also then turned and walked out the door.
LM was in shock how could this be happening to the woman he loved the woman who had bore his children the woman that had explored this wonderful life they had developed together. As he shook himself out of the depression that had over whelmed him he went to the room she was in they had isolated her until they knew if this was the contagious type or not and LM sat beside her bed thru out the night fighting the fear and anger that kept constant company with him all night long.
He wanted something to fight something physical that he could confront he longed to be able to protect her he had promised her his protection and up until this point he had never let her down. He also wanted something to hurt as much as he was hurting. He knew this was the fear and pain giving him this need. He quietly stated out loud to his slave “ I thought it was just the flu please forgive me” About this time a male nurse came into the room and Told LM that he would have to put the gloves back on to hold his wife’s hand or he would have to leave the room.
LM was hurting and he was not in control of himself as he slowly quietly walked to the male nurse he looked deep into his eyes when he was close enough to hear the nurses breath he whispered to the nurse “ I am not wearing rubber gloves to hold her hand, you’re not putting me out of here and you don’t have enough security in this building to do the job with out filling more beds than you have available!” he slowly returned to his slave, wife and the reason for his existence and kneeled beside her bed and gazed at her as she lay peacefully in sleep on the bed, he wished he had not said that to the nurse but was willing to carry out his promise to the male nurse is anyone attempted to remove him from his slaves side.
He watched his slave’s breath he watched he chest rise and fall he watched for any sign of life out of the corner of his eye he saw the nurse on the phone and figured that security would be here shortly. He closed his eyes and whispered to Dee “only God is big enough to separate us no man on this earth will do it” very shortly security arrived at the nurses station and they were talking to the nurse when the nurses phone rang and after a small conversation on the phone both the nurse and security looked at LM and then security turned and walked away. (Later, LM would come to find out that the Dr had called to see if there had been any changes in Dee’s condition and when informed about the situation developing had told them to leave him alone)
Later that day LM was told they were going to do a blood flow exam and asked him to leave the room for the exam. LM leaned over his slave kissed her forehead and waited in the waiting room. When the DR came to the room he sat next to LM and told him it was time to make a choice the exam was negative which meant she had no blood flowing thru the brain and was dead the only thing keeping her alive was the machines LM now had to make the choice of removing the machines or they would wait 6 hours and do another exam and if it was negative also they would remove them then. LM informed the DR that he would have to wait his 6 hours and returned to his slave!
During the next six hours Lm thought back to how they had entered into the Master Slave relationship how that a funny little over the knee spanking had developed into a full master slave relationship. How the help of a mentor that had been found thru a chance meeting of one of Dees high school friends had saved their relationship. How that for the past five years their marriage had become stronger and stronger to the point where they had not had a single argument in over three years. He smiled at the thought that there were no regrets, no I wish I had said’s, as they had learned to communicate no I wish I had not said’s because as their positions became more defined so did the need to jockey for position.
The 6 hours went by in what seemed like just a few minutes The Dr came in and LM looked at him and said Dr you not putting her thru that again it is time to left her go. LM had said his good byes and informed the DR that he would stay in the room as she passed on the Dr then nodded to the nurse who with tears in her eyes twisted a knob and then silently turned the machine off there was no gasping for air no convultions as the Dr had warned LM there might be Dee just slipped off into the next world where she awaits her master!
