Let me begin this post with an extremely candid disclaimer. I despise hip-hop music with a seething passion. Whenever I hear the unwelcome clamor of loud rap music or reggaeton coming from a car, I REALLY want to smash the window in with a large, blunt object. That being said, let me commence my DEFENSE of rap music.
I don't like rap music because, plainly stated - it fucking sucks. What kind of gets that uber-abrasive sandpaper feeling in my pussy (my metaphorical, superego-constructed man-snatch), is when other folks criticize rap for being "too obsessed with material things".
When you're a lower-middle class to affluent white person, the idealization in art tends to run along the lines of "social utopia", or some similar hipster bullshit. Now, in contrast to the "waspy" young sophisticate, is the socio-economically depressed, poorly educated, ebonic-using, urban black youth. I think that alot of these ghetto teenagers are too concerned with having enough to eat, and not being forced, out of poverty, to wear the same clothes to school every day, to really worry about "existential conflicts" or being "ironic" enough to run with the cool crowd.
I believe that a good chunk of art is the representation of an idealized existence, and if I were a dirt poor urban black, my ideal would be a life devoid of financial hardship. Even if I fucking despise rap music, I believe that it provides an accurate representation of the urban black kid's dream, even if it is a little short-sighted and askew. No wonder these kids lionize crack-slingers and pimps.
