A short interview....a rather uplifting and positive one....when surrounded by the copious amounts of doom-mongering and negativity that abounds at the moment.

......we can't do anything about global warming but we can do something about Aids? Uplifting and positive weren't the words that came to mind i'm afraid............

Partly true..........but if that is the case, then that IS the case.....I do find it uplifting to hear something fairly positive about it after some of the extreme predictions.

"I do find it uplifting to hear something fairly positive about it after some of the extreme predictions. "

.......from my POV it just seems to be an argument not to pressure industry to stop polluting. Surely the premise that nothing can be done to ameliorate global warming is just defeatist. The only winners being share holders in heavy industry, and then only for a short while.......i find nothing uplifting in being told a problem is intractable when it plainly isn't...just expensive.

Dauric -> RE: Voice of reason.....thoughts? (8/14/2006 8:14:42 AM)

Yeah, I'd agree with Philosophy here, it's not what I'd call uplifting, and it is rather defeatist even though he says it with a smirk.

Global warming is a far more interesting and complicated issue than most people think though. Most people focus on the "Greenhouse Gas" aspect of global warming, but there's more to it than just that. We know that the earth's core occasionally flips it's magnetic poles, it's happened many times through the geological history. Magnetic analysis of the iron content in pottery shards from very early civilizations suggests that it has happened once before in human history. Current analysis of the Earth's magnetic fields show that it is weakening, the computer predictions suggest that this weakening of the magnetic field might be preceeding a magnetic pole flip. There's a lot of "Maybe"s in that analysis becaue the event is so rare that we have little or no hard data to confirm the hypothesis... yet.

What we do have is a number of "magnetic anomalies"or weak points in the Van Allen belts. Under these weak points solar radiation is at much higher levels than elsewhere in the world.

Now there's not a lot that we can do about geomagnetic anomalies, but I'm not saying that we shouldn't do anything about global warming, far from it: We can survive a polar flip event, but it's going to get hot while that happens and we don't have a good approximation of how long that process will take to complete. In the meantime we should do everything we possibly can to keep tempratures down.

Anyway, Another $0.02 for all your mental accounts.

Dauric.

I am the voice of reason, anyone else is an imposter.

Ron, that's just downright unreasonable.

Lomborg's theories continue to be discredited by top scientists.   I wouldn't call him a voice of reason, though it's always nice to have even one person who claims to "know" and who presents himself as an environmental scientist (but isn't), tell us that our environment is better than ever.  Many people who want to believe global warming isn't a problem, refer to Lomborg.    I wish there was no environmental problem too, but, unfortunately, there is.

I'm confused.

I learned on other threads that God created the world as it is a few thousand years ago, so how can it be that magnetic poles could flip so often in such a short time? I also heard from other sources that AIDS is a punishment from this same God on those who engage in evil practices - so surely if anyone interferes with that punishment, they risk His wrath? And global warming? Whats the problem? God loves us so this must be part of His plan for us, surely?

Or maybe we're just standing on a relatively small rock, hurtling through space in orbit round a star, and this whole mess is our own problem to solve. Some will pray, many will die, and the few responsible for global warming will retire somewhere safe that they bought with the profits they made from destroying the world, along with enough food and water to survive, whilst the workers who made those profits perish. God loves a winner, and the devil take the hindmost.

*emphasis added*

Which thread claimed that which is in red? A little hyperbole, Ellen? lol

I agree with much of the rest of what you say, Ellen, and yes, there are those that believe some silly things.
