"Perception is reality and reality is an important concept"

What is your interpretation of that statement?

What we understand is our reality and reality is an important idea.

I guess the phrase takes us nowhere without being put into some sort of context. We each invent our own reality but the idea of reality is meaningless if there is no consensus as to what reality is.

Ahh yes, but lies that people believe, profess and uphold daily.

You perceive me as a foul mouthed unstable person. That is YOUR reality.
Somewhere else, another sees me as a kind old man. That is their reality.
Yet another place, I am seen as an intelligent, sophisticated, refined individual.

So....................
Kinda like the speech in Beetle Juice about death at the house of the living dead.

Each individual reality is truely a matter of individual perception. What they see from their vantage point, what they feel, what they imagine whilst filling in the blanks...........and everybody is right.

The basis of relativity.

Well said as well, but what would be the consensus of reality?

I believe it means we all create our own reality...based on our individual perceptions.  I believe the statement; we paint our reality out right in front of us and then live it in ways that support our perceptions.  This would be why 'positive thinking' and 'acting as if...' works.  I believe we can change our reality by changing our beliefs and perceptions.

Agreement?  Isn't 'consensus of reality' what forms groups of individuals with similar beliefs?  Take religion...each one thinks their god is the only one; their way is the only way.  It's just belief ...consensus of reality.  IMO

What we perceive is our reality - subjective reality is the best we can ever achieve. Objective reality however is another thing entirely. The reality in which we all live is the sum of collective agreed perception - but thats still not the same as objective reality.

Most of us would regard the schizophrenic who experiences hallucinations as living in unreality, but to that person, that is their reality according to their perceptions. Just because most of us dont perceive what he does, doesnt mean the schizophrenic is necessarily crazy - he might just be the only person in the world who is experiencing objective reality and its the rest of us that are impaired.

I've thought of this, and having done acid in my youth, I would have to say... no the schizophrenic is definately just crazy.

Also, I don't agree with Miss Bearlee.  I don't think pretending to be happy is going to make me happy when things are rotten.  It'll just make me passive agressive.

However..........the situation/reality that creates the unhappiness is your own perception, by changing your perception of that situation you can also change your percieved reality.

(oh good lord that hurt my brain to even type it.........and I am still trying to decide if it makes sense.....expressed what I was trying to say)

If I read it fast and try not to think about it too much I follow you. :p  I still disagree, though.  I'm thinking of the Simpson's episode where Flanders finally snapped after pretending nothing bothered him for years and years.  Who wants to be a psycho-Flanders?  That's right, no one.

So true Ron, it depends on who is doing the perceiving and also their preconceptions

Without some basis of a shared perception of reality, we would find it extremely difficult, if not impossible to communicate.

whats the betting some guy now posts a profile as "psychoFlanders"? If it hasnt been done already............

LaT is right in some ways - its the kind of technique used in cognitive psychology to treat people with depression - but its only suitable to change perceptions which are incorrect (according to the collective agreed reality), - rather than as a means of pretending everything's fine when it isnt.

The concept of reality is dependant upon the perception of it?

Reality is in the eye of the beholder. You can place 20 different people in the same exact identical situation and all may come away with a different perception of it. That is their reality. However, their peception of reality does not change or influence the actuality of the situation. Their perception is valid...but it is not necessarily truth.
