Think we all know how it works below is a list of numbers the next person has the following options:


State the next number in the sequence i.e. letting everyone know you know but not wanting to tell anyone what the rule for the sequence is.
Explain the rule to the sequence and then propose a new sequence.
State you don’t know what the rule to the sequence is.

If more than one person states they don’t know what the rule to the sequence is it is up to the person that started the sequence to explain it and propose a new one.

My sequence is simple because I’m quite thick but the sequences other people propose can be quite complex and could pose a challenge hopefully.

2, 4, 5, 8, 12….

Not 14 the next number I was thinking of was 19

Maybe 14 can also be the next number but I can't spot that pattern myself. Maybe this is a crap game after all.

I saw it as  2 (+2) 4 (+1) 5(+3) 8(+4) 12(+2) 14(+1) 15(+3) 18(+4) 22

Please tell me how you found 19.

Sure add the two previous numbers together and subtract 1.

i.e. 2+4-1= 5, 4+5-1=8, 5+8-1=12, 8+12-1=19 etc.

I liked your sequence better though. I think from now on the next person can add any number they choose as lone as it follows a pattern they can explain. That way we will not encounter this problem again. This also means you always have to give and explanation so ignore choice 1. This game is a work in progress.

Yep sequences of letters are fine, good idea.

‘A’ is the next letter for August

You are correct the sequence is from the periodic table and the chemical symbol for manganese is Mn which is what comes after Cr my book says.

Guess I was a bit lazy with that one I should have put more thought into it. I am going to have to think of another damn sequence now.

Benji:  1,2,3,4,5,6,7  . . .

The problem, Benji,  is its NOT a sequence if the clue to the next item in the sequence isn't embedded in the examples you give.  This is an example of "internal" vs. "external" sequencing.  So if I say:

1 1 2 3 5 8 13 .....

Every doggybutt on the planet knows that the next number has to be 21, because the internal sequence is clearly available.  BUT Benji, he posts "EXTERNAL" sequencing, where 1,2,3,4,5,6,7  doesn't reveal its key.  And I say "externals" aren't kosher!

oh and before I forget:

O T T F F S S . . .

(by the way, sequences like J F M A M J J ... are ALSO "external" in that they need an external source of knowledge to solve them.  Doubt me?  Try the months of the year sequence on a Turk, or a Chinese.  They'll be dumbfounded.  But EVERYONE knows Uncle Fibonacci!)

But then would not knowledge of the numeric system be necessary to solve any sequence?
