The movie "Sleeping with the Enemy" with Julia roberts...

Do you see this as a tragic D/s love story?

captiveplatypus -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 10:58:32 AM)

hahaha no

SusanofO -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 10:58:47 AM)

I actually thought the husband character was kind of Hot - but, since her relationship w/him was not consensually D/s, or M/s, I did find it somewhat sad.
I thought the next-door-neighbor guy she fell in love with after she ran away was a real cutie.

I've seen it a couple of times before.  I was channel surfing  today and tuned into the last 15 minutes of it.

I was viewing it from two perspectives:

Battered woman

D/s relationship

BTW.. this leads to another question that just hit me..:

While the BDSM could be said to always be RISK or SSC..

is D/s consentual after you have said Yes to the collar?

Paper thin plot with cardboard cut out characters.

Actually Julia Roberts just makes me want to slap her face for some reason so I had difficulty empathizing with her plight.

This is where the term "non consensual consent" and "ultimate consent" from.  A person doesn't need to consent to each individual act, as there is overall consent to simply go with the authority of the other.

I saw the movie in the theater when it first came out.  I saw no D/s eliment back then , nor do I veiw is as such now.  I just saw it as an abusive relationship.

LaTigresse -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 1:28:30 PM)

I have never seen this movie, just not something that struck my fancy.

KatyLied -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 1:29:22 PM)

For me it's a story of an abusive relationship.  I didn't care much for it.  But I'm not a big Julia Roberts fan and I rarely like any of her work.  That may have clouded the movie for me.  I will admit to liking the actor who played her abusive husband.  Now I feel a bit dirty.

I know what you mean..the character is very dominant with her..he gives me the creeps.. but he still has this sexy draw that I, too, hate to admit!

sleazybutterfly -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 1:37:19 PM)

I don't see it at D/s.. just as spousal abuse.. plain and simple.

Will admit to the draw as well.  Felt that same draw to the evil character (and many other evil characters) in the movie where that monstrerous character was trying to kill off the unicorn, and bring darkness back to the planet.  I can't remember the name of the movie, but it stared Tom Cruise.  Ah and there's the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera.  I just think its something about being drawn to power, but of course for me then bringing them to their knees at some point.  [;)]

missturbation -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 1:49:06 PM)

Plain and simple abuse.
Certainly no draw to the husband in the film he was just plain sick and twisted.

Lashra -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 1:51:52 PM)

I saw it as straight abuse and found nothing sexy about it whatsoever. He was just a bossy asshole who needed a foot planted up his behind. [;)]

I've never cared for Julia Roberts.

sublace -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 2:04:32 PM)

Most definately just a very abuse relationship.

Agree, there wasn't anything sexy about the the movie, (I've walked in the Julia's character's shoes to some degree) and I was surely happy that the vile husband got what he deserved, but back in the day, I found the man playing the character to be quite appealing in some twisted sort of way.

LotusSong -> RE: Sleeping with the Enemy (8/17/2006 2:14:11 PM)

I guess when I was watching it.. I toyed with this idea:  Is it just TPE to the extreeme?  We all have read or known someone where they say whatever Master/Mistress wants is my will.. what if THIS was an example of that.

Or a submissive that refused to use her safeword?

I know it's about spousal abuse..but the things he has her do like keeping the hand towel borders  just exactly straight.. and alphabetizing the pantry cans.  The "taking" of her when he wants..  these and having her wear what he wants her to.  These are the parallels I see.

For one it is abouse.. for the lifestyle it's play... or extreeme devotion.  The line is very fine I think.

I have known some submisives in so deep..they can't see the difference anymore.

The movie was "Legend". Had some really good imagery in that one.

I never thought of that. You could be right.
