What the heck does gay marraige have to do with the government, anyway???

MistressLorelei -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 3:43:35 PM)

The same thing that electing to have an abortion does.

Now it's getting confusing.... which group are the official intolerant ones?

Dauric -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 3:47:06 PM)

The correct answer is "E: All of the above."

Everything!!!
Marriage is a legal contract, and therefore it is the business of the government and nobody else. What you should have asked is what the heck does gay marriage have to do with anybody but the government.

captiveplatypus -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 4:18:03 PM)

Or rather, why is the definition of marraige being between a man and a woman as ruled by the Bible getting tied up in law?

peterK50 -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 5:14:20 PM)

It's a smoke screen.....let's the politicians make a lot of noise about the small stuff while the important issues get done in the back room.

Arpig -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 5:36:58 PM)

you got me there.

Lashra -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 5:44:06 PM)

Nothing, but since when did that have anything to do with it?
That's like saying prostitution ruin marriages. Since when did hookers grab married men and FORCE them to have sex?

Being a radical leftist who has no horse in the race in my mind seeing that both sides are assholes when it comes to democrats and republicans (my view, and I am talking about selling common people out) I would say the Republican party is more intolerant on most issues I could think of.  Both parties want to control us, both of them are for sale, but democrats have poorer special interests, so they win in my mind...

If we all voted for the least funded candidate the world would be a better place...lol

Pair bonding predates nation states

Your body is your own property. What the heck does private property have to do with government, anyways???

captiveplatypus -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 6:09:57 PM)

reduce health care costs?

I dunno, they don't seem to be doing much of that, either...

When it's about the United States government, let's not forget the phrase "For the people by the people"

Does the majority want to support a government that upholds homosexual marriage?
Voteing says?

Politicians who plan on getting voted in next term have to follow most majority standards. That's what it has to do with the USA Government.

It must stay around as long as possible so that it can continue to pay taxes. That's the real reason why suicide is illegal in the US.

Lashra -> RE: Conservatism - Philosophy of Intolerance? (8/17/2006 6:22:08 PM)

Look to the religious right in this country for why alot of our freedoms are being diminished. As far as they are concerned the Church and God have full authority over us, and only they know what is good for us. Religion digs deep in this country and it controls alot of the decisions made by the Govt, they are becoming much bolder as they aren't meeting with a whole lot of opposition. The line between Church and State grows thin and before long, I doubt you will be able to see it all.

I don't remember us voting on things because it's in the bible.  In fact I remember hearing something about a separation of church and state when I was in my Government class.  I don't know if it is constitutional enforcing laws based on religious ideals, not all of us even believe in God.  How is it even being allowed to be voted on?  Marriage is two people loving each other, living together, and potentially raising a family.  I don't see a difference between a woman and man making up that couple, or man and man, or woman and woman.  Not only that but it reeks of prejudice.

Tyrrany of the majority. If 60% of the population want's it illegal to wear red on thursdays It's illegal to wear red on thursdays. In a represenative democracy the represenatives are, in theory (stress there), supposed to buffer against that sort of idiocity.

Unfortunately on the other side of the ballot box we've go the choice of a moron that we disagree with or an idiot we can't stand, and both of 'em have policies that were framed by special interest groups armed with rigged polls. Neither interest group cares what your interest is either.

I remember learning a few things on Seperation of Church and State in government too.

A reality conclusion is that it's BULL SHIT!

How often do you see a politition get voted in after saying "Because of my beliefs, I would not be a homosexual and marry someone of my same sex. However, I do support homosexuals who do want to marry one another." ?

How is it even being allowed to vote on?

Well, the origianl law/definition of marriage says Man and Woman. Laws and Legal terms have to be voted on to be changed/amended.

Yup yup yup you brought up a great point in your reply. However, explain that to the Majority who will not even budge an inch to take "In God We Trust" off our printed money.

The money isn't exactly infringing on anyone's rights.

It used to be legal for African Americans to be slaves, too, and the majority supported it.  Did that make it right?  No, it was still morally f'd up.
