A couple more photos here of the same animal. The body liike like that of a coyote to me, and the estimated weight is that of an eastern coyote. That muzzle though, sheesh! Looks almost like someone bred a coyote with a chow. Hmmm, that would keep the neighbors away! I may look into that.

Anyway, the link to the other pics.

Thanks for forwarding the article reference, Brutal. These people  sound like idiots, to me, though. Listen to the quotes from the article:

"This is something that is just not supposed to be out there"...

Yeah, right. And the world is flat, too. And there is absolutely no chance whatsoever there are beings on other planets, either....People just can't seem to deal with the fact there could actually be a species of animal out there that has no set classification. Why this should surprise anyone is beyond me. There are new species found in the insect world all the time, and every so often in the higher orders of vertabrates. Maybe this is such a case.

As for the eyes, many cats have eyes that glow in the dark. So do some hamsters - because they are nocturnal creatures, for one thing. It is an adadptation of their own biologocal clocks - they are awake at night and not in the daytime. Maybe this creature was like that, too.

The evil talk doesn't really surprise me - but it sounds a bit ignorant. I can understand why they were afraid of it, but I am hoping they don't just toss it in a landfill somewhere.I am now wondering if any professor at a college in Maine somewhere was studying this creature's possible existence. Maybe it is just a coyote-wolf or dog hybrid. But, maybe not. Too bad the vultures got much of the carcass before they could study all of it. I hope someone keeps the remains of the creature, and studies it.

Brutal,
That is exactly what that looks like a cyote or wolf bred to a chow.

Shessh, the way the articles sounded you would have expcted it to have a few tentacles at least, maybe some non-euclidian geometry about it...

I mean really, Lovecraft kept setting his stories in that part of the country, an article like that comes out you'd expect a Deep One or something....

Well, see this article really is more proof that strange, new creatures have been discovered only recently.

Well thanks for finding this Brutal! How fascinating! I loved reading it - I just loved it.  So - there is a mysterious creature out there known as the Tasmanian globster, and-or the Bermuda Blob, that nobody really can classify? It is kind of like Octopus giganteus, but not really, because the collagen compoisition in its tissue isn't the same? And some pople apparently don't believe that Octopus giganteus exists, even, either. Wow, what a great read! I never knew, for instance, that Octopus giganteus wasn't really even identified formally until 1956. I knew it had been a legend for many centuries, though. And I had never, before I read this article, heard of the Tasmanian globster or the Bermuda Bob.

I live in NH, not all that far from Maine...and believe Me...there are MANY strange creatures that lurk out in the woods...most unfortunately, walk up on two legs. lol

After reading these articles...there are a couple things that strike Me.
1. The blue eyes-not uncommon in wolves and other canines. That they "glowed" in the night isn't imitating the pig Jody in the Amityville Horror, nearly ALL animals eyes glow in the dark at night, especially if they are nocturnal.  Ever see a dog or cat in your headlights at night? There's a reason they "glow" i.e. reflect back the light, has to do with having better night vision than humans because of how their pupils dialate and then reflect back more of the the light off their retinas.
2. The teeth, indeed they are strange they are fairly worn down and quite white in front. Which would be quite common in an animal who's diet was other animals for 15 yrs.  Unlike our pampered pets, who have canned food, and composite dry food. A wild animal exists by eating not only the flesh, but also gnawing on the bones of their prey. The marrow contained in bones is high in fat content, something quite necessary if you are going to survive a Maine winter.  The gnawing will wear down both the tartar (thus making them quite white-it's why We humans give our pooches chewy toys and 'bones'), as well as eventually dull the points on teeth from all that use.
3. That there were horrible screams at night is not surprising-this IS Maine remember..hehe just kidding. Seriously, there are some creatures in this area that are positively HORRIFIC to hear at night...several species of owls have a call that is truly the worst thing you could ever hear.  People have called the local police to report a murder, because of an owl's screams.  A fisher cat (now you want to talk about a wild, scary animal-look that one up) also has a screach that is similar to a woman or child giving a blood curdling scream.
4. That is had a stench..I sense a correlation trying to be drawn here to a Bigfoot sighting.  Well, most wild animals do have their own unique odor/scent..its how they tell each other apart, and find mates, etc.  A healthy canine living in the wild, won't have much more of a strong scent than  the average grubby dog. However, if you look at several of those photos, there appears to be something wrong with it's side..either mange or some sort of an infection. Both of those conditions will cause a terrible stench. Remember, they were  indicating that this animal was approximately 15 yrs. That is a significant lifespan for a wild canine in those conditions. Old age will make them more susceptible to both of those conditions.

So really, when it's all said and done-we'll probably never really know what this creature's origin was, because there were no scientific tests done on it's body.  For some, speculating that something evil comes this way is both fascinating, and exciting.  I say, curl up with one of tho
se Stephen King novels late at night by yourself, and have a good case of the willies.

Susan, glad you enjoyed it, especially since I had posted it mainly as a joke. I've often used the Cthulhu mythos on fundamentalist Repent for the end is nigh types.

That aside, cryptozoology has always fascinated me. That there may still be a giant sloth species out there, or an as yet unknown breed of predatory cat roaming north America allows me a sense of wonder that my normal skepticism toward the world would otherwise eclipse. I was a credulous little snot as a kid, and collected every Bigfoot story I could find. These days I hold the same opinion of it as Arthur C. Clarke. Were someone to give me $100 to bet on the existence of Bigfoot, Sasquatch and the like, I would bet $40 on it being in China, $10 on it being in north America, and pocket the other $50. Still though, it is always nice to hope.

Those blobby thingies - There are probably millions of critters at the bottom of the sea which we have never seen, dead or alive.  It is such a vast area, and so different from everywhere else on earth, that we can barely go down there and they cannotcome up to the surface without exploding, or at least dying.

Perhaps these blobby things weredeep sea creatures which were so tough due to their ability to come up through several pressure levels?  Gigantic fucking sea slugs, if you will?

It's just a theory, folks!

Yours;

benji

I would guess chow mix. Reminds me of an old neighbours chow after he has trimmed it for summer and it grew out for a few months. Plus, I think I see the telltail black tongue and chow shaped snout. Amazing how freaked out people will get over a strange looking animal. Sheesh, if they think that is scary they should look at the winner of the "ugliest dog contest"!!

Word from the authorities came in that it was just a dog. A typical mutt.

They did not detect the evil gene in it.

I agree with your conclusions MMNH. Before I got to your post I had reached the same conclusions. Unfortunately my first reply was timed out.

This night ghost is a unique species. It is not a cross-breed. It is nocturnal: blue eyes, thick coat, black/gray/blue coat, glowing eyes. It needs no eye pigment, needs warmth during the relatively cold night, and has perfect night camouflage.
The large but short snout indicates a strong sense of smell. The short snout indicates that it eats carrion, that it probably crushes bones for the marrow inside, and eats perhaps berries and fruits. (A long snout is necessary to catch life prey.) It probably eats carcasses that wolves leave behind. The (hyena-like) large belly either indicates a carrion eater or that it does not live on meat exclusively.
The bushy tail may assist in the smell communication with distant members of the same species.
It is solitary.
It is the North American solution to the hyena.
Considering its articulation it is on the terrestrial evolutionary tree. Considering its perfect adaptation to its ecological niche, it must have taken quite some time to evolve.

Your analysis is impressive, MMNH. Well done.
