So yes my passion is music. I live and breathe music. I will marry music it never lets you down and is always there when you need it. So what kinds of music do you all like out there? What genres? What artists? What is your creative outlet? My creative outlet is writing and singing. I love techno, trance, alternative, jazz, classical, etc. The list goes on and on.

SusanofO -> RE: Music lovers (8/17/2006 10:00:24 PM)

I also love almost any kind of music (I used to hate Rap, but even that genre grew on me after awhile. I can even tolerate Country, depends on the artist). My favorites are classical, Eighties, Bluegrass, and jazz. I really, reallly appreciate instrumental music; more than most of my friends seem to. My mother was a music teacher and I sing in my local symphonic chorus, so that's a creative outlet for me.
We perform about 4-5 times a year, and have to re-audition each year. Auditions are coming up at the end of August again - hope I make it; wish me luck.

- Susan

I'm more of a metal head...I like the raw sound. It appeals to me. I recently got to go to the family values tour in Dallas...the band Bury Your Dead was awesome. I am now a fan. They were the only band to incite a mosh pit.

BTW...seeing Korn jump around on stage in kilts...AWESOME!

SapphosReign26 -> RE: Music lovers (8/17/2006 10:04:42 PM)

So are you a soprano or alto? I loved choir. I miss it so much :( *tear*. Good luck on auditions!

SapphosReign26 -> RE: Music lovers (8/17/2006 10:07:00 PM)

I am a bit of a metal head myself. I love the hair bands from the 80's like Guns and Roses, Whitesnake, White Lion, Poison, etc. I saw Metallica in concert. They had a pryo show and people in the mosh pit I think got a sunburn from the heat of the flames because it was pretty damn intense. It was the loudest craziest concert I have been to. The lead singer is amazing the talent and passion he has in his music amazes me. I love Korn as well a very good band. Have you heard of the band called Kittie?

SusanofO -> RE: Music lovers (8/17/2006 10:11:03 PM)

Thnak you! I am a Mezzo-soprano, I really like it when they classify me as an Alto, but last year they made me a Mezzo-soprano, since I can fit in either category, and they needed me there. - Susan

SapphosReign26 -> RE: Music lovers (8/17/2006 10:16:44 PM)

Yeah I'm an alto but one time I could do tenor on a good day. Now that can be a little scary,lol.

They are my favorite band. Favorite genre: Rock

I am an everything person nowdays. I guess life changed that. My "hard limits" used to be rap and opera. I enjoy those, too now. 80s hair bands! Poison, GnR, Whitesnake. As well as Classic Rock, that is my all time fave. Fleetwood Mac, Dr Hook, Steppenwolf.
Not sure where these fit, maybe just random: Tommy James and The Shondells, The Box Tops,  The Grass Roots. Ummm...Toby Keith,  Tim and Faith McGraw ~grins~,  Vince Gill, Garth Brooks,  Martina McBride....Elvis, Patsy Cline,  Loretta Lynn, George Jones, ....Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Metallica, Pantera.....

Ok I am not going to name someone from every category...oh wait I forgot...I would have never forgiven myself LOL I usually don't answer to these types of questions, save to list  Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Kramer, because I often find myself re reading the answer and kicking my own arse for not adding this one or that one, but I couldn't resist this time.

Creative outlet(s) Dirty Dancing (also my favorite movie) Oh God I'm an eighties kid....singing, writing, being able to control and "channel" my emotions strong enough for Master to raise an eye brow and smile with surprise and approval.

OK, mate', you have opened up and babbled quite long enough...mushy mushy gushy say good night and go your ass to bed!

                                                        Well Wishes,
                                                           ~mate'~

<will be saying a special prayer tonight for those of you that read this in it's entirety>

I love "college" indie rock, Brit pop, and alt-country the most.  I can pretty much listen to anything though, from James Taylor to Public Enemy.  I've been listening to The Verge channel on XM radio lately.  There are a lot of cool Canadian bands out there now.

*thinks about what cds are in my car right now:  The Best of Jackson Browne, Keane, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Aqualung, Lemon Jelly, Sufjan Stevens

Be well,
Julie

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 7:16:46 AM)

After having just alphabetized and re-organized the older partners collection, it's much more interesting to talk about him as he's got about 1000 CDs, 200 LPs, 100 45s, and 200 casettes. He even has a computer database to keep it organized on.

Me?  I like music, but not with that sort of passion or hunger.  It's nice that he can enlighten me.

CreoleCook -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 8:03:17 AM)

well, to say I enjoy art in all forms, would be a slight understatement.  As for music?  hmmm... Let's just say I enjoy every and any type of music that cannot be classified as noise.  Example of noise?  Any band/group that plays the music so loud, and screams at the top of their lungs into a microphone, where neither the lyrics can be understood, nor the individual instruments can be heard above the distortion ratio coming through the speakers.

It really depends upon my moods...
Disney if playful, classical if relaxing, dixeland jazz if festive, classic rock if driving, country if working, techno/rave if cleaning... now this doesn't mean I stick to those strictly when doing any of those... its just an example...

Favorite all time peices/songs?  oh hell... pick a genre...
classical: Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Sheherazade,' or Gustav Holst's 'The Planets.'
classic rock: Steve Miller Band, 'keep on rockin me baby,' or Journey, 'Ridin the storm out.'
disney: 'Hakuna Matata,' or 'A Whale of a tale.'
80's pop: 'the Timewarp,' or 'Tainted Love.'
80's rock: 'Bruce Springsteen's version of 'Fire,' or 'Motley Crue's version of 'Smokin in the boy's room.'

anyway, you get the idea... I'm quite versatile when it comes to music.  I also love to sing Karaoke, and am not too bad at it, either.  Latest songs I've done: "Live Like You Were Dyin', by Tim McGraw, and 'Whereever You Will Go,' by the Calling.

My favorite genre is jazz but I love most all music especially bluegrass, trip hop, chill out, and acoustic soul. I could do without most pop and pop country ... but they too have their place.

Radiohead

YES!!! YESS!!! OH GOD YESSS!!!

I mean... yeah, Radiohead is awesome.

Have you heard Thom's new album??  It's been on my constant rotation for almost a week now.  I cannot get enough.

Speaking of which, I had the most wonderful dream last night.  I was spending the week in a flat with the members of Radiohead and we were all bestest friends.  Happiest most joy enducing dream of my entire life.

The Mars Volta is also great, as well as Massive Attack.  Those are currently my favorites and sum up my favorite styles of music quite nicely.

Other Faves:
Muse
Tori Amos
NIN
The Cure (only recently, hated them in my teen years for some reason)
Pink Floyd (who doesn't?)
Beck
Fiona Apple
Metric

Many many others.  I live my life to an ever-changing soundtrack.  My life is defined by the albums played on constant rotation at various stages of my existance.

Jazzkat1966 -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 1:55:56 PM)

Well, given my nick, it's sort of obvious what my main passion in music is. [:)]

Jazz-wise, I am REALLY into the big band genre. The majority of my playing during high school, college, and then professionally was with big band groups. I have a real fondness for 1940's big bands like Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and Benny Goodman, but I also like the modern big band scene, especially stuff from the 60's-80's, like Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, et al.

Otherwise, I also love 70's funk and 80's new wave!

cr0ckdile -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 1:56:45 PM)

I deeply love music, it's my life (literally, read my profile) and I'm very open minded when it comes to music, I'll listen to almost anything written between 1650 - 1950.  Baroque, Classical, Romantic, you name it!  [:D][:D][:D]

popeye1250 -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 8:14:24 PM)

I love music too and I'm also a Fiddle Player.
I like Irish Traditional music, Jazz, Country Western, Bluegrass which comes from Irish/ Scottish music.
On my yahoo profile is the lead singer from the Irish Trad. group "Altan" Mairead Ni mhoeniagh (Mooney)
I know the members of that group and visit with them in Donegal, Ireland when I go over.
My fiddle teacher's band opened for them a few times in N.H.
Forget all that "Danny Boy" crap and drinking songs that's tourist stuff.
Altan is a great band, look them up on the net.

With has old as music is I'm supprised that Music Therapy is a fairly new practice in the medical profession. There are many who have still not even heard of it.

I was a violinist for years, and was going to go into it professionally when things changed (a backstory to long and personal for web boards).

But I love almost every form of music, including rap which I do consider a genre/style of music.  My recent CD purchases have been the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou (which is a not to recent movie but has some great bluesgrass and gospel music), Ibrahim Ferrer (a kick ass afro cuban singer who is now deceased), and Busta Rhymes (a kick ass rapper).  I'd say by genre my favorite artists (at least currently) are:

  • Classical: Stravinsky (gotta love "The Rite of Spring" full blast), second with Elgar - I tend to be a romantic era and 20th century music fan - playing baroque is fun, but listening to it is boring
  • Rock: The Black Crowes (more southern rock, but definitely rock) and Bruce Springsteen
  • Blues: Buddy Guy (I've always loved him)
  • Rap: Kayne West, Jay Z, and Busta Rhymes
  • R&B: Prince (since I was a little girl I've loved him), Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and Miss Mimi (Mariah Carey)
  • Afro-Cuban: Ibrahim Ferrer
  • Pop: Madonna (her new album is absolutely wonderful) followed by Justin Timberlakes newest track
  • Jazz: John Coltrane (who can't love his rendition of "Lush Life"?) and Sarah Vaughn

I also love Sting, Angie Stone, Erykah Badu, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tom Petty, N.E.R.D., Christina Aguilera, Queen, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bartok, Tori Amos, Marley,  Eric Clapton, and probably other artists/composers I'm forgetting.

Did I mention I love to talk about music?

C~

popeye1250 -> RE: Music lovers (8/18/2006 10:22:38 PM)

Fleurs, cool! I never picked up the fiddle until I was 50 years old.
I studied under Catherine Norris of "The Angel Band" in New Hampshire for two years.
She'd been playing for 37 years at that point from the time she was 7 years old.
She could play anything but found Irish Traditional music and in her words; "found my niche."
