Status: offline 		Which power do you possess? Is it a combination? What is most important in your opinion? Can a submissive learn to give her will to someone through these powers or is it a feeling from the beginning such as Reverent power?

Reward power - ability to control the reward a slave wants. This provides reinforcements for correct behavior or changes in behavior or attitude. The slave complies in order to obtain rewards controlled by the Master,


Coercive Power - ability to cause a slave to have an unpleasant experience. It is also defined as the power to give or withhold punishment. It is also associated with using force to compel compliance. The slave complies in order to avoid punishments controlled by the Master.


Legitimate power - is based on position or mutual agreement. The slave agrees to accept her Master and grants him authority. Often this is formalized in a contract. The slave complies because the Master has the right to make the request or issue the order and she has the obligation to comply. Legitimate power is very important is a Master/slave relationship.


Reverent Power - an elusive power that is based on interpersonal attraction. It is the perception of being a reference point or role model. The slave identifies with her Master and the Master is individualistic and respected by his slave. Reverent power infers a personal connection between Master/slave. The slave complies because she admires or identifies her Master and wants to gain the her Master’s approval.


Expert Power specialized knowledge or skills the slave desires and/or needs. The slave complies because she believes that her Master has the knowledge necessary to correctly do something.


Sources of Power:

Reward power is Reward based

Coercive Power is fear based

Legitimate Power is position based

Expert Power is knowledge based

Reverent Power is personality based.

Status: offline 		All of them - at varying points in time depending on the situation, what I wish to develop, bring about, or use to gain a desired effect, and when I deem one to be more appropriate within a certain context or scenerio for the individual that I am dealing with at the moment.

Wow that's a long ol run-on sentence LOL!

I believe in being flexible, and adjusting my tactics to bring about what I desire, and using the most effective way of doing it. So rather than confining myself to one particular thing, I tend to view it all as a "grab bag" of sorts and choose what best fits my goals and desires for that moment in time.

Plus it has the added effect of keeping someone on their toes since they are less likely to predict which angle you'll be coming from, keeps them thinking a bit.

Status: offline 		Thank you so much ShadeDiva for your insight. Another question would be can you still have a successful D/s relationship is one of the powers were missing...for example Reverent power or expert power?

Status: offline 		Maybe with lots of luck. Sorta would be akin to shooting in the dark a bit though.

However I am of the opinion the both of those, in fact all of those reside in all of us and that we use them all at varying points in time, whether or not it is consciously or unconsciously done.

We all have personality (one would hope, lol, then again much like the saying: "I'm in shape - round is a shape!", so too would the concept of "I have personality - bland is a personality trait!" would also apply), and we all have power within our personalities in various situations or circumstances.

Really I think they all reside in everyone and they are merely expressed in different ways - but they are always present, even if not openly so or on the surface.

I would ammend the expert power description, however. You stated:

Expert Power specialized knowledge or skills the slave desires and/or needs. The slave complies because she believes that her Master has the knowledge necessary to correctly do something.

I'd say that expert power isn't based solely around the submissive/slave, but around both. Slaves/submissives also have "expert power" - specialized knowledge and/or skills that is compliment their partner's (dominant's) desires and needs.

I'd also contend that believing the dominant has the knowledge necessary to do something correctly isn't the only reason a slave would comply to their dominant's wishes, but also because they enjoy pleasing them, and because that is what they wish to do.

Actually that goes for all the "powers" that you listed, IMO.

I guess I just firmly believe, like with all healthy interactions between humans, that this is a two-way street all the way.

Status: offline 		I'm wondering where you got your list. The reason I'm asking is that about 15 years ago in grad school I took a class on power and leadership. As I recall there were 3 sources of power:

Referent Power -- same
Expert Power -- same
Position Power -- like the boss at work. This would combine 3 of your classifications because the position also has power to reward or coerce.

So I'm curious whether the academics in this field have had some good reason to subdivide the position power part since I studied it, or if this list comes from someplace that has borrowed the same stuff and then taken creative liberties with it.

Status: offline 		In trying to understand myself and to be a better submissive, I was in a search of why that I respect very few Doms with a reverent respect, which I think is needed to serve a Master (jmo). I have respected some for their expertise and even had a “fearful” respect once. I don’t understand if the fear was coming from consequences of disobedience or a fear of losing his favor and attention, however in an attempt to better understand what is needed in a D/s relationship I came across this link.

Status: offline 		ok. The description on that site is abbreviated; I did a quick google and came up with this link with broader explanations of the classifications. From what I see the coercive and reward power are usually associated with position (or legitimate), though there are cases where you may not find one type, like the police really don't have reward power.

So, IMO a D/s relationship probably starts with the referent power, which seems like a fancy way to say "respect". Then you'll add in the legitimate, coercive and reward power.

I don't think expert power is necessary; it may be there or not. Though a lot of dominants would like to perceive themselves as all-knowing fonts of wisdom, I'm sure the submissives can tell plenty of stories of smiling at them and humoring them in their delusions.

With in this conversation I seem
to see the most important power
missing and the one which drives
My every being and overcomes
most all the other Powers listed
here and that is the
POWER OF LOVE.
My Power of Love rules and runs
all other of My Powers and is the
Force which holds all things with
in My being and life together. JMO

I am still faster than a speeding bullet, (not in bed!) I am now as powerful as a trolley, and it now takes 2 bounds to leap the tallest building.

Is that what ya meant?
