The college supports Dell. I refuse to support Dell. I don't actually have the issue of spending money on the computer because if it's going to last and make it worth it then I am all for it....

From one that absolutely RELIES on computers both at work and at home I can tell you just a little.

Mac is great for graphic design, nothing is better.

PC's work best for many other programmes that we cannot run on Mac at all. It's not even an option. We are fortunate to have a local computer company that builds our PC computers for us.....no name brand. My home computer is about 3 years old so it is definately time for a new one. They age so fast in technology even 2 years is now old.

Whatever you get I agree with Gauge, back up back up back up. I back up the shop computer every night and my computer at home once a week when I do maintenance on it. I have an individual little thumbdrive that I back up each system on. I just cannot afford to lose files. After having my home computer crash due to internet germs and being terrified I was going to lose a few hundred photo files that I had not yet backed up, once a week is my religioun.

I was thinking about getting a mac.. Most of the Professors here use them and I'm just a lil ole TA and grad student but they seem really dependable and I haven't heard anyone complain about them. I'm more worried about what it is I am going to need for basic requirements I have no idea even where to start. I always back up the important stuff(put it on CD's because it's easiest for me and then keep a copy stored in my email in case I need to get to it in a pickle) I don't do gaming and won't on my laptop but I would like to be able to listen to music while I work or watch DVD's at night.. Any thoughts I that???

PS I HATE DELL :P

High five honey!
but yeah..a student..I'm a student..and personally I need winXP pro, cd/dvd-ram (or whatever it's called) good battery ..doesn't hurt if it's fast[8D] and well yeah...enough disc space but really 60gb would do it for me but I think laptops nowadays have got 100gb..so I wouldn´t complain getting one of these.. and then wireless card or built-in  .......and that is pretty much it, if I can type on it and the net and battery works..then I´m good[8D] (and then the alternatives for mac also apply here)

I've found that are trying to make more programs that are compatible with mac or vice versa but since all of the faculty or the majority of them do use mac's I figured I should be able to work well with one too.
