So I haven't had a job since I quit my old one in October.  My previous job was a very stressful mix of analyst and customer service at one of the largest Mortgage Companies out there.  I had to review loans and closing documents for errors, then there was extensive investigation as to what caused the errors, (usually our fault, or the closing attorney's fault, not the customers, although they signed the paper so it's their problem now) and when the error caused an increase in the mortgage payment (by at least $35, although sometimes it was in the $400 range) it was my job to then call the homeowner, explain to them what happened, why their payment is going up, why they can't sue us, and listen to them cry about their impending foreclosure.

The job before that I opened and ran a branch law office.

Before that I was a paralegal.

Before that I was simply a receptionist/secretary at a law office.

Now, I'm back in school.  I wanted a part time job because I am going to put myself in debt if I don't, but I don't want a full time job on the same level as I have previously experienced, because I AM trying to finish college now.

I go out and fill an application at this vet office for the receptionist position.  I even give the woman my resume.  I am obviously over-qualified for this job and I am taking a huge pay-cut to work there.

The Vet Office Manager:  Well, we'll give it a shot.  Don't buy scrubs yet incase it doesn't work out.

Me: ........ you saw my resume right?

Her: Yes, but lots of women who say they have previous office experience come in here and it's a whole other world.

Me: I.... really don't think there will be a problem, I really think I will do quite well in this position, and thank you for this apportunity to prove so.

omg it's answering the phones, accepting clients, and filing!

Anyway, I'm really excited.  Goodbye year-long vacation, Hello again work-force!

p.s. for some reason I keep hitting the poll button, so here's a poll!

Congrats, captiveplaty! I was always over-qualified when I worked as a receptionist, too - but I liked being a receptionist, because I like meeting and greeting people. The receptionist at my vet always remembers the names of my sogs - we go in there a couple of times a year. They both don't seem to mind the vet's office. Good luck!

I voted as would be for ME.

I recently inquired with the shelter in the county our farm is at. Something I could actually feel passionately about AND less GD driving.....I am a skilled animal handler, have yet to meet a dog I am afraid of ( think Cesar Millan of the Midwest okay). I was soooooooo pumped! With all of my skills I figured I was a shoe in. Plus I had just adopted one of their cute lil (not so little) dogs......AND sent photos with a brief report a few weeks after the lil fur baby had made herself at home.

Welllllllllll, a couple weeks later I had not heard anything and decided to inquire. I found out that the email address I had sent my information to was a FORMER employee that has since left the state, they never recieved any of my job info and had already filled the position but would I please resend the photo's and story for their site. Me being the nice person I am, did resend the stuff. I was pretty bummed that I had not gotten a chance at the job for awhile.

A few weeks later a totally unrelated incident pops up that causes me to rethink some of my personal characteristics. I realize that for me to have been the director of the animal shelter would have been just hell on me. Even though I do an excellent job at staying all calm and cool, keeping that stupid smile on my face, I tend to internalize alot of crap. Seeing innocent fur babies suffering would just be too hard on me I think and lord knows how many I would end up bringing home.

So yeah, I think you will be adding to your household significantly.

yeah, if it were MY household, I think I would be in jeopardy.  I'd adopt them thinking "this is just temporary, I'll find a good home for them somewhere" and then probably never would.  However I'm not living at my house, I'm currently residing at my Mother's house (again, to keep out of debt while going to school) and no doubt the moment she'd see me at the front door with something furry in my arms she'd spin me around and send me straight back to work again. :p

the question is then, do you listen to your mother?

My first job when I was in high school was a receptionist at a vet clinic.  I loved it!  Learned a lot about animals...and I already thought I knew a lot having been raised with them.  Only came home with a couple of strays...but then I was still living at home.  Otherwise it would have been more.

You'll do great.  Congratulations and good luck on your first day!

Ah I remember the good old days when I started my job; such high hopes I had world was my metaphorical oyster etc. Then they grind you down into ash and steal your dreams leaving you with desolation!

I’m not bitter I’m telling ya. No oh no not me.

Please excuse this slight hijacking platy I am sure you will do great!

If any of you know how to handle a dog who has panic attacks when it thunders please let me know. It is fine if I am home, she sits on my lap and trembles like an earthquake with her tongue hanging out. If she is home alone (with animal planet on tv) she freaks out and has been tearing up the carpet and scratching up the woodwork. I was thinking of crating her but not sure if that would make it worse.

Rescue Remedy! http://www.bachflower.com/rescue_remedy.htm

I use it for my whiny cat, either rubbing it in his ears, or just dropping it in his mouth, works great!

ETA: Congratulations platy!!

This one I know already from experience.  Basically: you can't stop it, all you can do is do your best to protect your things.  If you start crating it might help because the dog will begin to see the crate as its den, its sanctuary, maybe even drape a cloth over it if it is a cage so the dog feels more protected and hidden.  Even if that doesn't work, unless it's a really old dog with a heart condition, I promise it won't die of fright if you keep it locked up in the crate while you're away and it's storming.

First day was pretty awesome except the other girl training with me was crying all day while we were working because they were putting her kitty to sleep today.

Day Two.  The other girl that was training with me has been fired, but she was kind of a flake.

They seem to like me, though! (and I seem to really like everyone there, too, we click, so far)  I am a bit nervous because everyone appears to be related in some fashion or another and I am the only one who isn't someone's brother's wife's sister's cousin's boyfriend's girlfriend or something.  It's cool because it is funny to watch them tease each other.  I feel a bit like an outsider, but they appear to be adopting me.

I see cute puppies and kitties all day!

My new favorite thing is filing, I don't know why, it's like meditation.

Now if only I could shake this cold so I didn't feel like I sound like a dork when answering the phone.

I saw them do surgery today and someone gave me an icee.  Freaky stuff.
