Lashra -> Woman Fired For Being Female (8/21/2006 12:40:23 PM)

I Just saw this as I was checking out the news. It would seem that after 54 years if God was pissed at this woman for being employed by the church he would have struck her down a long time ago.
I think the bigots that run the church are alot more prejudiced then God.

(8/21/06 - WATERTOWN, NY) - The minister of a church that dismissed a female Sunday School teacher after adopting what it called a literal interpretation of the Bible says a woman can perform any job -- outside of the church.
The First Baptist Church dismissed Mary Lambert on Aug. 9 with a letter explaining that the church had adopted an interpretation that prohibits women from teaching men. She had taught there for 54 years.

The letter quoted the first epistle to Timothy: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

The Rev. Timothy LaBouf, who also serves on the Watertown City Council, issued a statement saying his stance against women teaching men in Sunday school would not affect his decisions as a city leader in Watertown, where all five members of the council are men but the city manager who runs the city's day-to-day operations is a woman.

//

"I believe that a woman can perform any job and fulfill any responsibility that she desires to" outside of the church, LaBouf wrote Saturday.

Mayor Jeffrey Graham, however, was bothered by the reasons given Lambert's dismissal.

"If what's said in that letter reflects the councilman's views, those are disturbing remarks in this day and age," Graham said. "Maybe they wouldn't have been disturbing 500 years ago, but they are now."

Lambert has publicly criticized the decision, but the church did not publicly address the matter until Saturday, a day after its board met.

In a statement, the board said other issues were behind Lambert's dismissal, but it did not say what they were.

GeekFreak -> RE: Woman Fired For Being Female (8/21/2006 12:49:46 PM)

Any idea what verse they are referencing? I popped out my bible in search of it, but couldn't find it.

It would seem that some want to go back to the dark ages and if this minister wants to take the bible literally i am sure i can find some passages for him.
2 spring to mind but i cant remember the books or chapters but in the New Testament it was said" and Judas went and hung himself." somewhere in the Old it said "go and do thou likewise."

[12] But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

They should have to pay this woman a settlement

MrDiscipline44 -> RE: Woman Fired For Being Female (8/21/2006 12:58:39 PM)

Well, their religous beliefs are their religous beliefs. They have just as much right to practice it as female paganist that believe men should be subservient. Life goes on.

Oh, I found it. 1 Timothy 2:11-15

This book of the Bible is a letter form Paul to Timothy (seen as Paul's protege'). This section is basically Paul telling Timothy how he should have people in the church act. The reasoning for not letting women teach is pretty entertaining, though (even from a protestant Christian view) "For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. And it was the woman, not Adam, who was deceived by Satan, and sin was the result".

But anyhow...I don't know why a church would uphold this scripture as God's will. It's always been my belief to view the Bible as it most logically seems to be. This is a letter from Paul to Timothy, so I would assume that this is Paul's interpretation of thing, not necessarily what God commands of people.

I wonder by how much the church membership dwindles because of this.  Would you continue to go to church there?

While I think the episode is nuts, I would argue it is all part of religious freedom. Religion isn't about political correctness.

I'm not religious and think religion is just superstition anyway.

The first Timothy is evil. It is beyond coincidence that the second - also evil - Timothy has the same name.

Edited to add: I just read that this was in a letter from Paul to Timothy. I doubt that Paul wrote this, or if he did, he meanwhile most certainly would have changed his mind. I suspect that Timothy put these words into Paul's mouth.

I, personally, applaud their decision.  I mean, a woman, teaching a man???????  If we don't nip it in the bud, we'll never get past the dark ages!

Well if she was.. the men were in her sunday school class :)  Dee-dee-dee!

wendyLDG -> RE: Woman Fired For Being Female (8/21/2006 1:13:35 PM)

Pauls teachings are well known for his antipathy to woman holding positions in the church and for teaching.  It seems very strange when he was supposed to base things on the teachings of Jesus, but like so much in the bible it is mans interpretation of Gods word and very often things were written to suit themselves.
i used to be a local preacher so am not disbeliever.

Benji is right!  If you don't stop them now, soon women will want to WORK.  Then they'll want to OWN PROPERTY.  Next thing you know they'll want to VOTE.  Then they'll control the world and all we poor Men will be able to do is sit at home with our (male) dogs and lick our genitals.

...uhhhhh...

E.

Is that what you see or is that what you want to see, Lotus.
