On the subject of women in the middle east, i would highly recommend "Swallows of Kabul". It is a wonderful book that i do not think i will ever forget reading; it is also the most depressing ***damn thing i have ever read. It does focus on the women of Afghanistan under the taliban, but it also portrays taken from the men, the land, the country and the culture itself, not just by the taliban but by centuries of endless war and violence. i will have to checking out Reading Lolita in Tehran; and Lolita itself.
