Brits Kick 'Toon Butts Off Tube

Britain's PC police are ordering Tom and Jerry to put on the patch.

The cartoon twosome will be the first on the editing block in an effort by the U.K.'s television regulating body to deglamorize smoking in children's programming.

The British kid's channel Boomerang, run by Turner Broadcasting's British division, has agreed to edit out puffing cartoon characters in roughly 1,700 episodes of classic Hanna-Barbera 'toons, including Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo.

Though at least in the latter, they may have more dubious smoke to cut than just tobacco.

"Turner recognizes that it is not suitable for cartoons aimed at children to portray smoking in a cool context and has additionally pledged to review the entire Hanna-Barbera catalog to remove scenes that appear to glamorize or encourage smoking," Cecilia Persson, a Turner VP, said in a statement.

In other words: Tom lighting up a cigar is out. Jerry whacking Tom over the head with mallets, axes and lawnmowers is in. Even the Brits know better than to mess with comedy gold.

The drastic recuts came about after the watchdog group Office of Communications, or Ofcom, received just one complaint over two Tom and Jerry cartoons thought to be potentially corrupting the young minds--and healthy lungs--of children. Boomerang, though, maintains that the edits are a voluntary measure.

The episodes in question were both created more than 50 years ago, but apparently offending sensibilities die hard.

In "Texas Tom," which first ran in 1950, Tom is seen trying to woo a female feline by rolling and smoking a cigarette with just one hand, er, paw. In 1949's "Tennis Chumps," Tom's courtside adversary, a very cool cat, is seen puffing on a cigar.

Turner, however, won't simply cut each instance of smoking from the classic 'toons, simply the ones, per Ofcom, "where smoking appeared to be condoned, acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation."

A spokesman for Turner said the station, half of whose viewership falls between the ages of four to 14, had already begun editing its way through the library of 162 Tom and Jerry episodes and had so far cut three scenes. The entire process is due to be a long one, as editors must paint out the images frame by frame.

While Turner initiated the cigarette removal, albeit with some pressure by Ofcom, they nevertheless warned the watchdog group that excessive editing "might adversely affect the value of the animation."

Ofcom's longstanding broadcast code, however, states that smoking not be featured in children's programming lest there be particularly strong editorial justification. "Because it's always been like that," apparently, is not good enough.

Though it may be for fans of classic cartoons that soon may not be able to recognize their beloved animated pals.

The BBC has already told the Times of London that whatever fate awaited Tom and Jerry would also apply to its corncob-pipe-smoking cartoon import, Popeye.

Though his spinach supply, at least for now, remains safe.

I don't believe this!!!! Jeez, this is what happens when you have social workers in power. A country that goes to war on a fucking lie in which thousands of innocent people die and cartoons that are censored for violence!!! Blair and his social work government are fucking nuts and need assassinating. Ooops the social work police will be coming to get me!!

diamonddreamlove -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/23/2006 10:35:18 AM)

Hey now qualify the social workers with quacky social workers please not all are that umm stuffy.  Sides i know some that are probably reading this now going hey wait.  Glad i am just a therapist lol.  But yes is stupid but then as we know there are many folks that breath only because it is an involuntary response!  Sounds like some of those folks qualify for caring a stupid sign.  Just my opinion!

Imagine a world where parents actually practiced the art of parenting and took responsibility for monitoring what their offspring viewed on television.  These people who whine and cry to the government about such nonsense shouldn't be allowed to reproduce ever again as they obviously can't be bothered with raising the children they already have all on their own.  My daughter wasn't allowed to watch anything that I hadn't viewed first and deemed appropriate for her age....IT WASN'T THAT HARD PEOPLE!!

Well stated and makes me recall a line from Failure to Launch by the character played by Terry Bradshaw that went along the lines of:  " [Back in day, none of us grew up with self-esteem and we turned out fine"  Of course this character also had a "naked room", but the point is that being a good parent sometimes involves 'Lawd forbid" actually disciplining and disappointing a child.......the child might actually have to do something he or she doesnt like as well as the PARENTS are actually making the decisions.

What world are you living in? You didn't notice the anti-smoking fanatics who have been trying to ban smoking in tv and movies? This has been going on here in the US for quite awhile. I am sure there are many who would rejoice at this decision. Go take a look at the second hand smoke thread here on Collarme if you need proof. Oh, and by the way, it is not the Right who is behind this.

NorthernGent -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/23/2006 1:59:44 PM)

There are three ways to look at this:

1) Tom and Jerry is important in your life so you make a big deal out of it.

2) You couldn't give a flying one.

3) You've never seen Tom and Jerry but anything to herd with the sheep will bring you to the point of "PC gone mad!"

If it's that much of an issue why not write to the programme and register your complaint..........."Dear Sir, I watch Tom and Jerry every night and I've been crying all week because of the patches. My life is not, and never will be, the same. Yours Sincerely".

Regards

I drink tom and jerrys and smoke cigars.

Don't do this shit on tv kids, it is dangerous.

Amen to that.  TV and school...  The nation's babysitters.

Most of the people watching those cartoons are not kids...

I hope they do not cut out the catnip

I watched it every day when I would get home from school, is it really necessary to edit something I consider art?

LaTigresse -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/23/2006 2:56:15 PM)

Parents need to turn the tv's their kids are watching off more often and kick their butts outside to chase cars in the street.

BUT, I do love cartoons!!![:D]

rofl to the highlighted part!

I couldn't get my son plugged into the TV when he was little, I tried really hard, he just wasn't interested.. it really ticked me off I did not have this "babysitter" that all my friends did[:D]

gooddogbenji -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/23/2006 3:17:30 PM)

Anyone watch Simpsons, when Itchy and Scratchy get censored?

I'm not saying it will lose all humour, but a part of the charm of vintage anything is that the customs are still those of the times.  I have lots of vintage posters and books, and they're great BECAUSE of the lack of PC, the dolce far niente of a cigar and a martini.

As someone else said, if you can't control what your kids watch, or at least use the opportunity to explain that smoking used to be okay, but now they know it's unhealthy, DON'T HAVE KIDS!

I, personally, would boycott it as a matter of principle, and would not let my children watch it either.  Let us live in a world where there is still life!

Yours,

benji

julia,

It's a cruel old world. Best to soldier on and try not to think about the terrible injustice of it all. In our hearts there'll always be a Tom and Jerry.

Well on my side of the pond it stays the same right? I did not understand that they would be changing it over here.No worries, too bad for you over there.

I would be even more troubled if they tried to change Ben and Jerry's..smiles

Out with the cigarettes, in with the mallots, anvils, and meat cleavers.

nefertari -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/23/2006 9:05:37 PM)

I love Tom and Jerry!!(by the way, it's on Boomerang every night at 8:00 EST)  [:D]

So what about the racist Bugs Bunny cartoons?  The ones showing a black man as uneducated and with really big lips?  Those are ok, but show a kid a cartoon with smoking and it's bad.  Hmmm......

I agree, by the way...parents should be doing the parenting,  not the corporations.

I pay good money for premium cable.  If I want to see Tom smoke then I should be able to see Tom smoke damn it!

Yes very well stated!

meatcleaver -> RE: sometimes they go too far (8/24/2006 7:33:51 AM)

It's not so much about censoring Tom and Jerry as censoring Tom and Jerry is a symptom of the nanny state and the state employing too many people that don't have a real job to do. Freedom to watch or switch off should be a personal choice not some inadequate lefty ot righty's idea of what is right for society.
