Simple. We put our asses on the line and many of us die doing our job to protect your ideals and way of life while you sit in your easy boy sucking on a barley pop watching football. We are often times responsible for equipment that costs upwards of 50 million. We go in as boys grow up fast and come out men that often live several years of civilian experience crammed into a couple short years. How many civilian doctors and nurses do you know that have died in the line of duty while putting a bandaid on your ouee?.  i suppose if accelerated experience and dying for you has no value then we are no different than anyone else.

A grand statement without any basis outside of propaganda.

WRONG.  I've never had a barley pop in my life.

And it sounds fucking disgusting, to tell you the truth.

RealOne:
The military does not "put their life on the line" to protect anything of mine or anyone I know.  The military is the muscle behind   corporate amerikan foriegn policy.  If you doubt this perhaps you might want to read a little book called "War is a Racket" by General Smedley Butler, USMC.MOH.
Neither you nor anyone else in the military was or is responsible for a piece of equipment costing 50 million dollars.  You may operate it, you may maintain it, polish it, paint it but you are not responsible for it....if you were responsible for it you would have to pay for it if it broke.
Military doctors and nurses are not the ones being shot at when they put bandaids on oweies ...those are called corpsmen and medics.
Anyone who has been in the military knows that it takes ten support personel to put one infantryman on the line.
The military remains the unwilling being told by the unknowing to do the unnecessary.

...depends entirely on whether or not you also have any contagious diseases like, say, leprosy, hep C or HIV. Doctors and nurses do risk their lives, every time a patient presents, every time there is an outbreak somewhere and people need medical attention. Thing is, they don't get hazard pay, nor do people like yourself give them the respect they deserve.
In my opinion, military service is no more or less deserving than many other occupations......medics and teachers being two, IMO, comparable professions.

JohnWarren -> RE: Soldiers....unique service or just another part of society? (12/22/2006 10:15:18 AM)

"Value to society" is a nebulous concept.   I recall the story of the parts of the body getting in an argument about which was more important.  The brain insisted it was because it thought.  The mouth because it supplied food and drink.  The legs because they moved it around.

Well, the asshole listened to the discussion for a while and then quietly went on strike.  In a day or two, the brain was unable to think, the mouth was vomiting and the legs were wobbly.

It just goes to show that sometimes to be really "important" one just needs to be an asshole

I agree with the thrust of your post but I must take exception to your position that leprosy is a contagious disease.  We do not know what causes it nor how to cure it or even how it is transmitted.

After too many years too close to the "product" of all branches of the military I agree 100%.

interesting point, OP.

my father has served this country well for nearly 39yrs (and still serves in VA). i believe it has made him a better citizen but that's for public viewing. i lived with him under a strict military domain for most of my life (it sucked being the only kid for 11yrs) - not a pretty sight when a career military man couldn't separate military from private sector. however once he settled down in place after moving around from base to base, he slowly adjusted to civie life but keeping the military separate.
