...depends entirely on whether or not you also have any contagious diseases like, say, leprosy, hep C or HIV. Doctors and nurses do risk their lives, every time a patient presents, every time there is an outbreak somewhere and people need medical attention. Thing is, they don't get hazard pay, nor do people like yourself give them the respect they deserve. 
In my opinion, military service is no more or less deserving than many other occupations......medics and teachers being two, IMO, comparable professions.
