captiveplatypus -> A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 7:13:46 AM)

Last night I was in the worst fucking pain since I broke my pelvis. All night long I was writhing, moaning in agony.

If you are EVER offered Zmax liquid one-dose antibiotics DO NOT ACCEPT IT!!

Once I was done vomiting from the nausea (which the doctor warned me would probably happen and gave me a SECOND DOSE incase I puked up the first dose, which I will NOT be taking the second dose!!!) I was then vomiting from the pain. I thought my intestines were going to burst right out of my stomach and explode, the last thing I remember is rolling around on my bed crying out to Jesus or God to make it stop, then it's morning and my mom is asking me if I'm ok and I realize I passed out from the pain, but the pain has finally stopped, and I somehow am still alive.

Most fucked up medicine I ever took.

I've taken it....twice....and it worked beautifully with no side effects.  Sorry you had the bad reaction, but everyone is different[:)]

curses, why meeeee?  I thought I was going to die!

windchymes -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 7:29:14 AM)

I'm so sorry, cp!  The problem with the new drugs is that they can be really powerful to combat some of the resistant bugs out there, but they can really cause some nasty side effects with some unlucky people....like you [:(]   It sounds as though you are actually allergic to it, just like a lot of people are allergic to penicillin.  At least you'll know not to take it again!  (Hope you're feeling better now, too!)

pahunkboy -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 8:41:52 AM)

im pretty ironcase when it comes to meds.

is there any chance the ailment was soemthing else? i ask cos there are often side ailments...for instance codeine can clog the colon up- making one sweat and constipate.

what did u eat that day?

antibiotics are best on an empty stomache.

im sorry you got sick,,,, last night was no picnic here- i cant digest that spray on oil- like pam cooking spray- and ate some chicken cooked this way. damn. to vomit or not- and can the nieghbors hear me.

it sucks the big one for sure

BrutalAntipathy -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 8:52:01 AM)

I'm afraid that it wasn't something she ate. What she experienced was a rare but known adverse reaction to Azithromycin. It can even cause inflamation of the colon and pancreas. Platy, if you start  noticing any jaundice of your eyes, get to a doctor immediately and demand a liver function panel. Better yet, make an appointment anyhow, and have them give you a full exam. If you reacted that badly to it, there may still be complications. For what it is worth, you have my sympathy and concern.

pahunkboy -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:04:55 AM)

thank you for the info- i will pass it along.

captiveplatypus -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:05:08 AM)

I did eat a couple hours before, but it said it was ok 2 hours after eating.

What is jaundice?  You mean turning orange?

I don't have health insurance, health insurance won't accept me. :(  I'd rather not go back to the doctor unless I start getting sick again.  I feel fine now.

BrutalAntipathy -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:11:22 AM)

Yes, jaundice is a yellow or orange discoloration. It means that your liver isn't functioning correctly. Since your liver is the primary toxin filtration system in your body, this means that it can kill you in a hurry. Jaundice will normally show up in the whites of your eyes first. In advanced cases, it will discolor the skin as well, and will even stain white sheets with the secretions seeping through your pores.

Rule -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:22:10 AM)

Best wishes. Has your pelvis healed? If so, why do you need antibiotics? I have no clue about this adverse reaction. I think that you should pay attention to BA: he seems to know what he is talking about. Jaundice is a telling sign that your liver is in serious, possibly mortal trouble. I hope that you do not have symptoms of jaundice.

captiveplatypus -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:22:55 AM)

my mom says my eyes look like I'm stoned... I swear I am not. :(

goddamn.  I have to work today.  It's a new job.  I can't not go!

BrutalAntipathy -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 9:39:54 AM)

Ok Bucko, if you insist on going to work, jot these things down. If ANY of them start happening at work, get your happy ass to a doctor, pronto!

1. If your pulse starts acting erratic, slowing and speeding regardless of your activity level. This is Tachycardia.

2. If you begin feeling faint, very light headed, or dizzy. Hypotension

3. Painful vomiting or diarrhea. Colitis or pancreatitis

4. difficulty breathing. Anaphylaxis.

5. Inability to urinate. Renal failure

6. Jaundice. Already explained that one

ANY of those symptoms can be fatal, and need to be addressed immediately. I am not trying to scare you. I am just giving you a short list of possible complications that you might suffer. These are the things to watch out for over the next 3 days. The stuff has a half life of about 70 hours, so this is the time to watch for most of the symptoms. The urinary and liver problems can possibly come days or even weeks later though, so keep an eye on those symptoms for even longer. I suggested the liver function test to rule these out, but if finances dictate that you do it through trial and error... well, that speaks volumes about our health care system.

I don't expect you to have any of those symptoms, but I wouldn't sleep well if you didn't know what to look for, just in case.

maybemaybenot -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 10:11:04 AM)

BA has given good advice, not much to add to it.

Make sure you * at least * notify your MD and pharmacy that you had this reaction so they can list it as an allergy or severe drug reaction. Many antibiotics are second generation of a previous drug and the liklihood of having same re action to the next generation of drugs is high.

The second reason you need to contact your MD is because you have most likely vomited the antibiotic, so whatever infection you have has not been treated and will continue. Even if you got a * partial dosing* the bacteria will continue to multiply and sometimes mutate into another strain.
          mbmbn

I am still scratching my head at the fact that your MD more or less expected you to vomit and said take it anyway and gave you a second dose. I've been in the medical field a long time and it seems callous at best.

captiveplatypus -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 10:27:29 AM)

Thank you very much, I will watch for those things, and I have left a message with my doctor as well letting him know.

Edit: I think he expected the vomiting because I am so small and do tend to have adverse reactions to medications that might not necessarily be killing me.

windchymes -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 11:50:50 AM)

And then try to relax because you are probably going to be fine.  Most of the extreme symptoms described above (erratic heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, faintness) are also symptoms of anxiety which I'm sure you now have after reading all the dire predictions of impending doom.  They can also be symptoms of the dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea that you had. Don't panic if you do experience any of them...it's most likely NOT something fatal about to happen.  It takes a lot more than one dose of medicine that you vomited up most of to cause jaundice, liver failure and renal (kidney) failure.  If you are able to eat and drink and keep things down today, then you should be okay.

"Colitis and pancreatitis" literally mean "inflammation of the colon and pancreas", and you already have symptoms of that....they're inflammed due to the reaction to the drug.  Once again, you'll be fine.  Eat and drink foods and liquids that are on the bland side for a couple days so as not to irritate your system more.  It will heal on its own.

Part of the responsibility of being a medical professional is knowing when and what kind of medical advice to be passing out and to whom.  Seeing the situation for what it IS, not inducing hysteria.  Keeping the patient calm and positive in their outlook, not filling them full of fear.  Drama, drama, drama.

mbmbn is correct about the infection that you took the antibiotics for being still active in your system.  Listen to your doc....he'll probably give you another medication that you do need to take.  Also, if you go into work today, just explain to your boss what happened.  Maybe they'll give you light duty today, let you sit and read employee manuals, work a shorter shift.  Good luck, sweetie.

captiveplatypus -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 5:23:06 PM)

Yeah really other than a bit exhausted from the previous night's ordeal, I felt fine.  I was hungry and eating and drinking normally, no further stomach aches, I didn't even mention what happened to my boss until I was about to leave anyway as a "haha I thought I was going to die last night" little anectdote.

I'm getting another antibiotic and my doctor wasn't all "omg you're gonna die" so I didn't panic.  Good day at work.  I think I'll live.  I also think a nap is now in order. [:)]

windchymes -> RE: A serious Warning about an antibiotic (8/25/2006 5:35:59 PM)

Good, glad to hear you're feeling better!

I did not make dire predictions of impending doom. In fact, I mentioned that I did NOT expect her to have those symptoms. I described tachycardia in such a way that it should not be mistaken for anxiety, and made no mention of shortness of breath, but rather of anaphylaxis.

Indeed I would not wish to panic a patient. However as she made it clear that she had no intention of BEING a patient, I felt it necessary to educate her on potential complications. I had also previously advised her to return to her GP, and used the information as instructions of last recourse. Part of our job is also educating the patient, after all.

As you seem to have some medical knowledge, I would assume that you were aware of Zmax having a half life some 5 to 12 times longer than most antibiotics, which would extend the duration of any potential complications accordingly. Were she hospitalized for observation due to adverse reactions, the things I listed would have been monitered for by any halfway competent staff until they could be ruled out. I had no access to her H & P, and did not know if she supplimented her diet with anything that could heighten the risk of a hepatic reaction, such as Niacin. My primary concern, as evidenced by my first advice being to request a liver panel, was hepatic.  I had far rather induce mild anxiety than to gamble with someone unaware of potential complications suffering liver or kidney failure. Frightened and alive is by far preferable to serene and deceased.  As mine was the only medical advice given at the time, I find your belated critique of my advise rather amusing.

"I don't have health insurance, health insurance won't accept me. :(  I'd rather not go back to the doctor unless I start getting sick again."

move to Europe, where even poor people can see a doctor whenever they need to............ye Gods, America.........don't stories like this make you feel queasy? Richest country in the world and you don't even have universal access to medical care.
