MIAMI - U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record) told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws."

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate also said that if Christians are not elected, politicians will "legislate sin," including abortion and gay marriage.
Harris made the comments in the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, which interviewed political candidates and asked them about religion and their positions on issues.
Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."
"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said.
Her comments drew criticism, including some from fellow Republicans who called them offensive and not representative of the party.

Sounds like a worried candidate saying something really stupid to one audience and hoping nobody else hears about it.  Right up there with the SoCal Dem who told an "immigrant" audience "You don't need papers to vote."

Almost makes me wish the 'Jesus was a Liberal' crowd had a bit more success convincing Fundamentalists to get involved in the Democrat primaries.  You guys deal with them for a while...

Is she that goofy chick from the Florida voting disaster?

Level -> RE: Oh those charming Christians... (8/26/2006 3:05:52 PM)

Yes Katy [:D]. That might have been the only good thing she's done, keeping certain elements from stealing the election with the hanging chads.

It sure seems to me that illigal immigrants voting is more of a problem than the opinions of Ms. Harris. But you will never get most people on here to agree. They are so worried about The Christian Right taking away their rights. And so far the only "right" that anyone has come up with when I have challenged them, is the "right" to buy a dildo. Lol. I guess that is the 69th amendment? You can't even say Merry Christmas anymore without worrying that someone will be offended. That sure doesn't sound like a country on the brink of religous fascism to me. Quite the contrary.

As is the nature of things.. when the pendulum swings one way. it will swing equally to the other way. November will tell the tale.

I love Christians. Everyone should own a few of them. If they bore you just feed them to the lions!

popeye1250 -> RE: Oh those charming Christians... (8/26/2006 5:33:12 PM)

It seems like it's always "Baptists" that are always causing the problems!

You didn't happen to get the winning Lotto numbers from him did you?

Actually, Tammy Faye seems to be have a decent heart; but someone, take her makeup kit away!

As for Harris; I don't think much of her, but she opposed the hanging chaddites, so good on her for that.

juliaoceania -> RE: Oh those charming Christians... (8/26/2006 6:14:38 PM)

Oh but they are harlots Level.. and I can judge them as a non-makeup wearer.. he he..(although the kinky sex may put me in hell one day that is another story).. I am actually fond of Tammy Faye...lol. I have something of a collectors item, my best friend when I was little was a fundie and she gave me an album with Tammy Faye and her hubby singing called "Oops There Goes Another Smiles". I did not think about it until I was going through some childhood momentos and found it.. I had a laugh when I realized it was the Bakers that made that record years before the scandal.
