M. Jules-

No, you are not, and in fact I had thought the same about the first photo you had mentioned in that thread. I read the post, and as ususal when I don't know the poster, clicked his name to jump to his profile. The only pic was not so bad, except for the backround, which was a disaster area, and as I often do, I thought " man- is thais cat blind? how could you post that crazy mess?".

I have seen some great pics, some amazing photochopping on this site, but I am always amazed by the crappy webcamshots, showing a mess behind a person who hair is unkempt, thier clotthing in disary and no sense of the image they are putting forth.

On another site, a young dominat asked me for advice on his profile, and I looked at it and pointed out that one of the pics in his stack showed him sitting appently naked at the computer in the basement, and that we ususally make fun of that guy. He actually has an MFA, too!

I maybe take it too far, but still- six of the first eigth photos in my stack were all made on the same day, and photoshoped to a standard format/image quality that same day, and posted the next. Yes I have a decent digital camera, yes I know how to use photoshop, but yanno, everyone here has eyeballs, right? (well -not to be insensitive to any blind websurfers we might have).

For the love of god, people! There is no reason here not to put your best foot forward! if someone finds your profile interesting, they are going to look at your photo very carefully- and for that matter, if the pics catch their eye, they might read the rest!

Stay warm,
Lawrence

PS- I'd be happy to advise and photochop any pics that anyone might want help with. I know that I have developed an eye for images that does take time, and may be able to give some simple things to keep in mind.

Topcat,

Your point is well made, it amazes me that people post photos that are either not the best quality, or they are poorly composed. I am not even going to discuss the photos that are sideways!

People speak about how important it is to have a well wriiten, thought out profile, and then put a photo in with no real regard for the quality. A picture truly says a thousand words!

Here is an example of a great photo, this could be a few times a thousand!

I always assume that people who post poor quality pics either don't WANT to be clearly seen or don't have a clue about photo editing.

Oversized photos on the ad side tend to be really fuzzy. Changes in file size (make them smaller) generally fix that problem.

The photo you posted, however, scared me IYM.

The photos I've taken of myself have been taken by me with a semi-decent digital camera. The problem is: it's me taking the picture of myself, so for the most part, I haven't taken very good pictures. But I used to run a very old photo for my profile, and I started to think it was somewhat dishonest of me to keep running a picture of 6 years ago, so I decided to go for the digital camera shots instead until I can actually get something done by someone who really knows how to take a picture. I've had a few people respond that my photos aren't the most flattering of me, and it gets really frustrating because I'm trying really hard to be honest, and unfortunately I don't look like Brad Pitt. It's the ones that respond with negativity that really bother me because what am I supposed to do? Plastic surgery? In person, women say I'm generally attractive or cute; unfortunately when you're a lousy photographer you don't really get the opportunity to make that known.

On another subject discussed in this thread is about stuff in the background. My latest photo, if you look at it close enough, may reveal that there's a Winnie the Pooh poster right behind me. If you take the general direction of this thread, that means I'm hiding the fact that I have kids. Actually, that's not the case. I'm the kid. At heart. I like Winnie the Pooh. I also have an extensive stuffed animal collection. But no kids.

Sometimes, you can make assumptions believing you are being more detective-like when you are really just making guesses.

I agree to an extent. I mean, I use a photo of myself. Nope, it certainly is not the best photo I have. Yet at the same time not the worst.
I'm not here seeking. I do believe you should put your best foot forward when seeking. Now, I'm not talking some glamour type shot because if you cannot live up to it on a daily basis. Well whoever you meet is going to be real disappointed. Then you're also not being honest.

I had my profile pic up until someone said they were ogling my breasts. So then I put up a pic of my passion. Hiking. So, to me the photo only really matters when you're seeking a mate. I'm only looking for friends.

I know myself as well. For people like you Sarbonn, if you looked better in person than you did in the photo. It would be a very pleasant surprise. So, not too great yet not too bad either.

Winnie ROCKS!!!! My screen saver is winnie the pooh and I have a poster up of winnie in one of my rooms too. That would be kinda different than having a half empty baby bottle and some baby wipe in the background when you are modelling your CB3000 for the world to see, don't you think?

Happy New Year!!!

well, on the topic of digital photos etc.

I use both a webcam, and a digital camera when I take mine. Since i'm unable to figure out how to set the timer on my digital camera,, when i take pictures of myself with it.. i'm usually holding it :X

but um, yep :) for every 1 good picture people see of me, there are probably 50 that i dont show anyone :X

so GoddesJules Winnie the poo is your favoriate character in the series? How interesting. I'm a Tigger Person myself always bouceing and ready to pounce.
So how often do you get your smackle of honey? It it difficult to find or to find just the right flavor?

As to your request to topcat for a session, hell I"m tempted to pay just to watch or woudn't mind buying a recording along with paying for the shiping and handleing. If not with you well I'd settle to watch him work on someone else I guess

At anyrate I do agree that TopCat is one Top CAT. I wouldn't have a problem with him watching some of my techniques for critiquing purposes on useing my forarms, wrist, and best stances to take when giving a whiping session.

I'd like to work something out as a new years resolution

Midear Duane-

Ok, here's a few simple things that can punch up your pics:

1] Backround. either hang a sheet (some of my pics use a shower curtain or a darkblue sheet as a back drop), or pick and interesting backround. Bookshelves are great, but what ever you, clean up the trash, throw in some interesting knick knacks, and you are ready for step two.

2] Lighting. go to the local hardware store and pick up a few clip on lights, the cheap $8.00 ones, and a few 150 watt bulbs ( know the fixtures say 75 watt max, but it will be fine for short periods- just don't leave 'em on and run out to the store or something).

Control the light! what come out will bounce, and fill the other side, which can be ok (I like a more dramatic side lighting, but YMMV), but it might pick up the colors from the far wall and make for funny colored shadows. Also don't mix natural (day light/sunlight) Flash and Incandesent or flouresecnet light sources- most digital cameras will adjust for the best white, but if you mix sources, you'll get funny colored highlights and or shadows. I tend to do it at night, and turn off all the room lights.

the best setup to start with would be two lamps, about ten feet apart, aimed almost stright up at a white ceiling, with the camera about ten feet back from the lights, and your postion just behind a line between the two lights, about two or three feet back. this will give you a good three-D soft lighting, and should leave you well lit with the backround a bit darker. Move yourself and the lights around till you get an effect you like, but leave tha camera in the same place to make things simpler to compare. if you are going for a side light, like in many of my photos, and there is two much 'fill' in the dark areas, hang a dark sheet on that side to absorb the light.

3] camera angle. you have a good side, figure out what it is, and figure out wehater you look better with the camera above or below you, and remember that the camera will likely be a little 'wide angled' which will make the closest part look bigger. want to empaphsis your arms? shoot from bicep level- but it may make your head look a bit small and pointy. Most people look their best with the camera slight hiher than eye level, looking down a bit.

If you look at the pics in my prfile, you'll notice that the camera hight and postion give a very different feel from pic to pic.

A tripod is a great help here, and a small one can be had at Kmart for about ten bucks or less. if you need more hight, stack books or whatever to get it.

4] The model. That would be you.

Put on a nice shirt, for chissakes! or no shirt, but look in a mirror and think about how it looks. A teeshirt almost never really works for most people, but find one that looks good on you , and fits right, and isn't stained ( and you can tailor the fit here and there with binder clip or clothes pin, placed away from the camera, to make the fit a little better.

had a haircut lately? at least make sure you don't have a cowlick, shave or don't shave if you want a bit of a scruffy look and can pull it off (better yet, shoot, shave, shoot, and ask someone elses opinion).

Pose. Think about posture. Look in a mirror and practice smiling- I tend to look either goofy or stern, and I find that if I actually talk to the camera, telling a joke while I wait for the timer to go off, I get a nice natural grin that doesn't look forced. It's also a good trick to get set, look down, close your eyes, relax your face, then look up and smile at the camera. Timing it is tricky, but it gives a certain live feeling to the pic. The candid looking pic on my profile is compleatly staged and I am gesturing and talking to the camera, but it looks relaxed and natural, right? ( I was actually pointing at the camera and saying 'I think you need a good enema!' if I remember correctly<g>)

5] Edit. go through the pics and pick the best, looking for a range of looks- most of the pics I used were chosen from about twenty each, and I discarded the bad light, eyes closed, weird expression ones out of hand, then flip through them and decide which one you like best. Crop it and size it, and copy it to a folder with all your final picks, then go through them to even out the lighting/ exposure values. I have been cropping to a squre format lately for no particular reason, and I size them at 400X400 pixels at 72 pixels per inch, and save them as Jpegs at about 70% quality, which makes them small enough to upload easily.

Good luck

Stay warm,
Lawrence

Hmm.. I usually have at least one of me. I think that a picture just gives a clue of what you're about. Nothing like being there.. lol.. I usuallly just put up things that I like to take pictures of. Running to flop down in a chair just doesn't seem like a lot of fun.

M. ThornBlood-

Well, it can be , actually. At least, I enjoy it. However it was taken, your profile pic is great.

Most of my issue lies with the sort of image that just has nothing right about. Should one be so unconcerned with one's presentation?

Lawrence

My pics are super grainy. One is from a video and the other two are webcam shots. I do have a digital camera and while I don't remember how to use the timer off-hand, I could probably figure it out if I had to.

I used the grainy shots for two reasons. The first was that I thought they were flattering poses. The second was that I wanted to give people an idea of what I looked like without being absolutely positively recognizable. I actually even put a little bit of a blur on two of them in hopes of being a bit more anonymous. I also used PhotoShop to fade out my bedroom furniture on pic number two for the same reason.

If I was going to meet someone however, I would send them a very clear representational shot prior to getting together. I would probably chose something that was even a little unflattering. Because I would hate for someone to be disappointed to meet me.

Take care :)
Ophelia

Ophelia, & All,
Your comments bring up a question for me- as a dom, what sort of pictures work best? I like your softer pictures; what impression would they give for a dom? (I have my own ideas, but I'd like other perspectives.

Thx,

Hi Falcor :)

One of the reasons I put the photo of Master and I up was to show I wasn't looking. And I hope that's at least part of the impression my profile pics give.

Yours truly,
Ophelia

I think something that shows your personality. When I first took the initiative to contact my Master he had this photo on his profile. While possibly not for everyone, I liked the message it sent.

I'm not sure if you are really expecting an answer. But to me the msg was that he was strict Dom-wise. And that was compatible with what I was looking for.
