just over 10% of the school population was suspended for inappropriate dress - tank tops, t-shirts with designs, etc.    Should this be allowed?

cuddleheart50 -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 11:46:48 AM)

I think they should be suspended...if they don't learn how to dress in school how will they ever learn how to dress properly in the work place.

MissTlTTYMilk -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 11:48:22 AM)

Students/children should follow rules and regulations in schools so they can have a chance at coming out as law abiding citizens.  IMHO, i believe that we should teach students that rules do apply to them and so do consequences. In my state, public schools require uniforms so this eliminates the problems you have described. In my day, (pulls up the granny panties), if i got in trouble at school, i would have also have been punished at home only more severely--novelty idea i know......

Perhaps an administrator's view ...... It takes only one day to eliminate the potential of 9 months of problems.

If the violations were against the dress code and the dress code was delivered to each of the students (I'm assuming it's part of the standard student handbook ),before school started then yes, the suspensions should be allowed to stand.

Many schools have gone to uniforms in inner city areas to prevent things of this nature from happening.
Many employers have dress codes and employees are sent home to change for infractions.
It's a simple fact of life. There are rules and if you chose to be where the rules are you have onsented to follow those rules.

that should be consented ... now I'll have to flog the damn spell checker ... [;)]

justanotheclaire -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 11:54:03 AM)

the most i got away with at school was not tucking my shirt in or wearing my tie skinny side out .
suspending them is pretty harsh send them home to change and reissuing them with the uniform code woudl of been better  anyone persistantly disregarding the uniform then should of been suspended

pahunkboy -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 12:04:37 PM)

wierd things happen in Indiana.

civility and decorum [tho] are a thing of the past it seems. slothfull,. slobbiness, crude is todays reality.

i have to wonder if you werent part of the 126, you probaly arent cool.

this tactic might backfire.

What are you going to do? You're in Arizona and this happened in Indiana. Say simply made an example of a few students showing that they either follow the rules or the consequences will be harsh.

i think they should bring back the paddle

Throw the book at them!

The bruise it leaves should be an apt reminder.

The problem with suspending kids in violation of the dress code is that they get rewarded with a day off of school. I've always thought that the more appropriate action to take is to keep some godawful looking clothes bought from the local thrift store and make them wear that for the day. If the choice is between a stained hawaiian shirt and  one from home that doesn't show the midriff, you know they'll start obeying the dress code.

However I will add that one year my daughter's dress code said no shorts that are not fingertip level and she wound up without any shorts as we couldn't find any long enough for sale. We tried Sears and JCPenneys, not the teen stores but had no luck. So it's difficult to obey a dress code when you can't buy the required items. Also where she is now, girls cannot wear shirts that reveal the collarbone but boys can. When it's 95 outside, this is a very unfair requirement. If the girls have to wear proper tee shirts, then the boys should too.

nefertari -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 2:25:03 PM)

Suspension for inappropriate dress is rather severe unless it's the same student repeatedly violating the dress code.  As this was such a large number of students at one time, at the beginning of the school year I think they were trying to make an example.  I wonder if the school district has a new superintendent....hmmmm...

Much better idea, IMO, is to require kids violating the dresscode to go to the office and change into appropriate clothing.  Our school keeps the god awful school bought sweats and tee shirts on hand.  Most of the time, those kids only do it once.

smilezz -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 2:31:43 PM)

As odd as it may be...if the school has a certain criteria for dress, they should have been sent home to at least change.   If they have it written in their laws that they get sent home.....then so be it.  Personally,  school uniforms should be in all schools until they graduate.  That's my two cents though.

We send em home at our school. Then again, this is not a reward because when they're gone, regardless the reason, it's considered an absense, and absenses are worth 20% of their final grade. In other words, more than 5 absenses in a semester and even if you get an A, your report card will reflect a B or a C. Anything more than 5 and you're dealing with the possible inability to pass a class. It should also be said that even while a D is passing in most schools, in ours, you have to make a C average in order to qualify for clinicals - which is also a required class for graduation.

While we are a public academy, all our students apply to the school. They CHOOSE to go here. Their parents receive information regarding our dress code and how it can impact their children's grades and eventually, ability to graduate at the very beginning of the year - both from the principal and from each and every one of the teachers. Parents and students have to sign off that they understand the ramifications of our policies. And mid-year, when they arrive in THEIR work uniforms to argue our dress code, and attendance policy, we empathize, but do not change the rules.

If 126 students showed up during the first few days of school out of uniform, there'd be no argument, no discussion. They'd go home, and that'd be one absense for them early in the year. Most of them realize they can't afford it. Those who don't, learn quickly enough.

hmmmmmmm   13 responses so far.   seems fairly evenly split on the issue.   Now of those of you that responded how many are dems, reps and others?   Seems to me that the Democratic response should be, coddle the little ones after all it isn't their fault.   The Republican response should be give it to them for the max because they failed to follow the rules and the Libertarian response should be that it isn't listed in the constitution.

spankmepink11 -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 3:10:58 PM)

I believe the dress codes should be enforced, however i think a solution other than suspension is called for.

Archer -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 3:15:31 PM)

I know that suspenssion while seeming to be a reward, will usually result in caring parents administering punishments to their kids far in excess of anything the school would do. Of course that only applies to the parents who care enough to be involved in their kids education.

Personally susspenssions here at this house would mean home cleaning the entire housee bathrooms bedrooms spotless or something equally laborious, so they know that school is alot more fun than being home. LOL

LeMis -> RE: 128 students suspended at Ind. school (8/27/2006 3:30:34 PM)

They are in high school now, they're big boys and girls, they surely knew what the dress code entailed (since the school usually has 20 dress code violations a day).

I would like to think that the staff at the school has better things to do w/ their time than to help dress these high school students.  Send them home, if they stay out of trouble for 12 weeks the infraction is removed from their record.

Uniforms are much simpler.

Just my thoughts/opinions on this subject.
