A friend of mine paid $2,500 for a laptop offered on Ebay though PayPal.
The seller disappeared.  Ebay and PayPal told them there is nothing
they can do for them, that they are out their money.

I would assume they filed a dispute? Which way was the dispute ruled in favor of?

They do everything they can to get the money back to you, I've ran into sellers who've been contacted through lawyers and have been brought to court in order to retrieve people's money.

Me thinks your friend got what he deserved. What kind of a moron would spend $2500 to buy a used lab top when you can get a brand new one with extras at your local Best Buy or Comp USA?

$2,500?  That's a pretty unreasonable sum for a laptop...especially on ebay.  What kind was it.  And, I don't think that there's nothing that can be done.  I doubt if ebay will do anything; however, your friend certainly should contact the police and then a lawyer.  I mean, paypal has to know where the money went.

That's the same logic as getting an e-mail from Nigeria, sending over $2000, and then declaring e-mail to be a scam.

It is a tool, perhaps used by scammers, but usually put to decent, honest use.

And if someone gets fooled, I call it a cost of doing business.

if he used a CHARGE card- he can dispute it.

a DEBIT card or checking acct- he needs to complain to his states atty office.

I'll be honest: I don't believe this story.  I don't believe that the friend of a world-famous physicist would be stupid enough to pay $2,500 for a used laptop, and I don't believe that both Ebay and Paypal told him there's nothing that can be done.  I've used both services many times.

I think you're full of tall stories.

Also did he evenbother to read the sellers feedback? If you read feed back sometimes you'll see a lot of negatives and neutrals.

Buyer beware.  I don't understand why anyone would pay that much for a laptop period.  Let alone a used one.  Doesn't make sense to me.  Did he check out the seller's ratings?  I've used both of those services (ebay and paypal) and I've never had any problem.  Actually Paypal helped me with an on-line dispute over something my son purchased and I found it very helpful.

Yes, supposedly WhiptheHip independently discovered a decades-old idea in physics.

Ah...I didn't read that thread...it looked too well, it just looked too.  But I would think that a world famous physicist would know the difference between though and through.  Maybe not.

Um, how many minutes of my life will I have to sacrifice in order to read that thread?

I thought there was buyer protection. As a seller that used paypal for my antiques business I was always feaful when someone bought a significantly priced item (over 500) with paypal because it is too easy to say they were dissatisfied for any reason. That being said, if you use a charge card you CAN make the seller eat it on the item if something is wrong, and this is much abused to the chagrin of the merchant.

(From the other thread LAM posted)

Wow.  The OP doesn't want to give out his age, but doesn't have a problem posting a pic.

Now, he knew Einstein, who died in 1955, so he must have been at least 20 for that to have any significance, any relevant information passed on or mentoring to have happened.

That would make him born in 1940, making him 71 now.

Hey Gramps.  I just called perma-bullshit on your writings.  Any time you write anything, I will have a little bell go off in my head, letting me know that another little pile off BS was just left on a CM doorstep.

Yours,

benji

Can I say as a retailer on Ebay and a user of paypal. I dont think your story is full of the correct information. I think your not telling everything so folks will give you attention and or  bad mouth ebay and paypal. Buying a used laptop for that amount is outragious. I think your the friend and you dont like that you were that dense to buy something used at that price when you could have bought one new at best buy dell or circuit city for a load less.

Im sorry if i am being harsh. But i think your not telling everything. and as a retailer on Ebay folks who bad mouth ebay and paypal make it harder for honest  retailers like myself.
Your story if true is an exception to the many sellers on Ebay.

It was a seller that scammed your friend not eBay or PayPal.

I've bought on eBay with no problems and I've been had too.

The price does seem a bit high but then my laptop was $5300 brand new.
I went through the upgrade list and kept saying yes. I had the money so I got it.
I don't regret a single penny either.
