PayPal is not a scam, as i have used it to pay for my internet radio station that i run and have not had any problems.

however i do get "SPOOF" emails that i have sent to ebay and paypal's spoof email addy and gotten some good responses thus far.

i do not have an ebay account as i don't have a credit card but have seen things on ebay and know that if i saw something that i wanted, i would check it out on other websites like ebay  and see how much it would be worth new and if i had the money and it was worth the buy then i would purchase it.

always go window shopping on other websites like ebay before buying and check it out in stores close by, if it is worth buying it on ebay then do so, if not buy it where you can get it cheaper. JMO

No, I'm drunk.  He would have been 20, so born in 1935, making him 71.

There we go.

A friend of mine paid $2,500 for a laptop offered on Ebay though PayPal.
The seller disappeared.  Ebay and PayPal told them there is nothing
they can do for them, that they are out their money.

Had your friend filed a complaint with eBay under the buyer protection plan, eBay and PayPal would have frozen the seller's PayPal funds... pending the seller's responses to your friend's complaint. There would have been arbitration which would require the seller to make good on the deal, or fully reimburse the buyer since no goods were received. If the seller did not respond to the complaint, then eBay would require a full reimbursement from PayPal... deducted from the seller's account's frozen funds.

Your friend is either blowing smoke, or they didn't exercise their rights under the buyer protection plan.

That address posted earlier offering "AntiPaypal" info  says that Paypal can clean out your account. Can this be true ? What does it really mean anyway ?

the problem is if this crooked seller disappeared, and or if his paypal account has a zero balance, then paypal cant recover the funds for the buyer.  It does happen.  The only possible way to increase your chances of recovery with such a large purchase,  is to pay through paypal, but instead of using your paypal balance, use your credit card that is linked to your paypal account.  You can then contact your credit card company and depending on their policies, they can revoke payment, and or they will investigate it and contact the seller for you.  It all depends on what kind of protection policies you have on your credit card.  But you have a very good chance of simply telling them that you were ripped off and they will remove the charge no questions asked if you are a long time customers in good standing.  I have done this myself...not involving ebay, but involving a fraudulent charge on my credit card...they just removed it from my bill on my word that I didnt make the purchase.  Its not a guarantee that it will work in every case, but at least you have a hope in hell of recouping your losses.  But when you pay with Paypal this large sum of money and a crooked seller disappears, you can kiss your 2 Grand goodbye. For a purchase like this, I woud go to an electronics store and buy the warrantee and everything.  I have never purchased anything more than 400 bucks on ebay.  I would never purchase a computer from a place that I couldnt go back with warrantee in hand.  On ebay even if you buy a laptop from an honest seller, youre still not getting any warrantee with it.

There have been accounts of people having probs with paypal.  But I believe it was chinks in the system rather than a scam. Your best bet...if you're a seller and accept payments through paypal is to just transfer your money daily into your regular bank account, this way there is never any great amount of money sitting idle in the paypal account subject to 'mistakes' or accidents or whatever.

NastyDaddy -> RE: PayPal is a scam. (8/29/2006 1:23:48 AM)

I have bought computers and laptops off eBay, but nothing over $1,000 as that is the eBay buyer protection plan limit. I bid on a laptop described as fully blown IBM G40, 80gb drive, DVD/R, 3 megs RAM, and lots more... I won the auction and paid the $700 for it... and two weeks later received a much diffferent laptop with a 10gb hard drive, CD-ROM, 256K RAM, that actually had two serial numbers on it. I went through the complaint console of eBay and within a week had instructions from eBay to ship the received laptop back... the dood accused me of swapping drives, RAM, etc initially, but after I forwarded pictures of the two serial numbers, he wanted it back asap... and refunded my money as soon as I provided a shipping number.

My purchases are done via the PayPal buyers credit card, and it went fairly smooth although I had to pay $15 return ship costs.

eBay buyer protection plans are outlined at:  http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/isgw-buyer-protection-steps.html

Sadly it's not always that easy. Paypal buyers protection only applies if it says it above the paypal logo on the auction page. Not all auctions has this as it's up to the seller to include it or not.

As the other person suggested I'd recommend calling your CC company and doing a chargeback.

Had a similar bad experience with e-bay / pay pal regarding an antiquities purchase a few years back - Got lucky though and got my cash back. I no longer engage in any type of electronic money transfer over the net.

I thought there was buyer protection. As a seller that used paypal for my antiques business I was always feaful when someone bought a significantly priced item (over 500) with paypal because it is too easy to say they were dissatisfied for any reason. That being said, if you use a charge card you CAN make the seller eat it on the item if something is wrong, and this is much abused to the chagrin of the merchant.

I think the problem with certain antiquities / antiques is that authenticity is often times very subjective {I know it is in relics}. If the seller offers no return period or isn't agreeable to using a reputable escrow service.... it's very easy to get burned if you’re not an expert.

As for computers/parts….. why buy on the internet when you can go to Best Buy or Fry’s.

I have heard that if you are receiving payments for certain... adult... services, then as this is against the paypal terms and conditions then paypal will freeze your account and take all yuor ill gotten gains. You can get the cash back off them if you can show that they were mistaken... but I'm not sure how easy that process is

NeedToUseYou -> RE: PayPal is a scam. (8/29/2006 8:54:14 PM)

I doubt this is the case. And I'm sure a 2500 dollar purchase wasn't funded by paypal funds directly. A debit card with a visa of mastercard logo, or a regular credit card would get his money back as well. So, ask your friend how he paid? Unless it was by money order or check, he can get his money back.

Maybe his friend  needed money and thought the hard luck story would work ?

Here we go with the time thing again.

Isn't paypal owned by eBay?

It was a seller that scammed your friend not eBay or PayPal.

I've bought on eBay with no problems and I've been had too.

The price does seem a bit high but then my laptop was $5300 brand new.
I went through the upgrade list and kept saying yes. I had the money so I got it.
I don't regret a single penny either.

Dang....I got a laptop, printer and a camera all in one box, brand new at Radio Shack for 1500.00 I'm happy as all get out.
