I'm looking for some suggestions about how to handle our beagle when we have a session. Today we put him in his crate but he started howling when I was crying out/screaming from being flogged. Unfortunately, it was a distraction to us both and we were concerned that our dog would become confused that I was actually being hurt.

We do not always want to use a gag, so we were wondering what would be the best option? I was thinking of putting his crate downstairs and shutting the door so that he has a floor and some doors between us, but other suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Uh oh. I have two doggies, and never thought about this possibly happening, because when I had my one bdsm relationship, I always met my Dominant at his place (he had no pets). But my doggies love me dearly. One of them I know for sure would go nuts and try to bite anyone he thought was hurting me (the other one, on the other hand, would probably let a burglar rob my house blind, if a burglar gave him a pork chop). Maybe put them outside, if you can do that, for a few hours? I am not sure the walls are a good enough sound barrier (but maybe experiment with it)?

Beagles especially never like being left alone. As long as you puppy is not trying to take away the flogger or bite your master, there's a good chance that he will just lay down and be quite or go out by the door. The main thing is not to keep the door shut. That is what makes them feel alone.

If your dog is trying to play with you while you are trying to session, you'll have to be patient with obiediant trainning and allow your pup to mature.

We have a Terrior who does not like any of the noises spanking, whiping, and such. She just goes into the living room untill she does not hear anything.

I have a Boston Terrier and ran into the same thing.  He was loose though, so he would go in the other room and hide out.  Then when we got done, I would go in there, sit and hold him a bit.  He would usually calm down pretty quick.
 
One time he did pee on sirs briefcase, I think this was because he saw me get beat with the belt so many times.  At the time, I was pretty upset.  Now looking back, he was a very smart dog, and I find it very amusing.

My cocker spaniel hides when I get the floggers out...has done ever since I first started practising on a non-human surface...lol!  I think he just doesn't want me getting any ideas!
It did seem to get him used to it though.

Thanks everyone:

Firstly, we rent and do not have a fenced in yard, so we cannot put him outside.

Second, we have to put him in his crate. He's pretty inquistive and gets in the way. He has to be in the middle of everything and be part of things. He does not mind being in the crate, but you're right...he hates closed doors. The door was open today and he was able to see us. It was the noise that bothered him.

If we put him in the basement, he wouldn't see the closed door since it would be at the top of the steps and he would be in a spacious room. He wouldn't feel shut in, I think...so that might be the best course of action. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem and how others might have approached it.

Oh God, you have a Beagle?
Someone gave me a Beagle puppy when I lived in N.H.
At 0600 in the morning he'd be howling if he heard something outside!
I'd let him out and he'd be in the back; "OWWWWWWWWWWuuuuuuuuuuuoooooo, OWWWWWWWWWWWWWuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuOOOOOOOOO, the neighbors started complaining and he started digging up the former sub's flower beds! She was PISSED!
We had him for about a week.

Leave him loose.. when he reacts to you..( he'll probably be by you..) have master toss him a treat to make it a positive experience for him.. However, shouldn't you ever NEED the dog to alert to your distress sometime.. you'll be screwed. Just a thought.
 
 If it were I,  I wouldn't keep the dog.  It's way to stressful to an animal if they love you and try to protect you.. to ask or train them to do otherwise, is cruel.

Oh my god.  This just struck me as the saddest thing for your poor doggie to think you are being hurt and he cant do a thing to protect you.  I dont own dogs, so this never crossed my mind and I wish I had a suggestion for you.  I hope someone comes along with some good ideas.

The advice on allowing the dog to wander loose and move away of its own accord is good. A woman who served me in my early twenties had a big male black German Shepherd who would spring up and hide at the first sound of flesh being struck. His nervous flight was eventually replaced by a rather casual sauntering off over time. Outright sex didn't bother him, but anything sadomasochistic did, and understandably so. He was fiercely loyal to his mistress, but had come to bond with me, too. Removing himself from the room was his way of coping. In the end he became quite used to seeing her submit to me, but certainly did not apply this nonchalance to the rest of his mistress's interactions with other humans. With strangers he was still just as social and protective as ever.

I never have this problem.  I rescued two deaf dalmation puppies several years ago.  The Dalmation Club of America has a rule that all breeders must test their puppies for hearing and the deaf ones are put to sleep (it's in the genes).  They make the best pets ever!

Thunderstorms don't bother them.  Fireworks don't bother them.  Screaming doesn't bother them either!

Investigate alpha dog behaviour. Social climbers too while you are it.

I have a pug/chihuhua who at first would really freak out and shiver and stuff (he'd never heard me make those sounds before, and he especially hates the sound of the crop). Now he just goes away (bathroom usually). I have only a studio where i am now, so i don't shut him in any where, and i woudn't anyway. As a pack animal, that would be telling him that he has done something wrong (in my particular situation, where my dogs have always been full members of the family, and i rarely have them out of my presence), and he would be even more resentful at the sight of my Master. I have found that he has gotten much better over time. My Master is also very good about petting him and he always gets a treat after. Soon maybe he'll even start looking forward to it!

I train my dogs to get over separation anxiety the same way -- treats before I leave, and littel attention when i return (well, at least for the first couple of minutes) and that way they kinda like it when i leave. This is hard, but i would suggest starting off slow, and let him get used to it with lots of positive reinforcement when he is good. Have you let him sniff the toys too? If i had a dog that barked too much, when he stopped, i would heavily 'pet and good boy'. when he started back up again, I would turn my back to him and ignore him, so the only attention he got was when he was good. It always worked. Of course, i've never had a beagle, smiles.

Whew! sorry to be long-winded! I love dogs!

While this certainly isn't the same situation I put My 2 small dogs in another part of the house and play music or allow the TV to be back ground sound for them. This helps greatly for them. Of course they react to anykind of loud noise not just noise from scenes.

<laffin> I have a Russian Blue alpha male cat.. When Sir plays with me.. he just goes after the whip tails or the rope ends. Sir thinks its hysterical. I am waiting for the time that Sir whacks me once with the flogger and the cat actually jumps up to my back to snatch at it..

I imagine this would be quite an interesting sensation almost worthy of subspace.. <chuckling>

No No and No. It's best to let him free. Otherwise, he'll never learn to chill out. When your pup is in there being curious, you or your dom will have to keep telling him to sit or lay down and stay along with giving him thoughs little jolts to the neck like you see on the Dog Whisperer show on National Geographic. It's the best way to train him to become more docile and obidient. Sooner or later he'll be use to the fact that you sometimes have to get your freak on and that he needs to just relax and wait for you to be done.

I over the years had two shitzus... and both would go on the attack if you even playfully slapped someone. Very protective. There never was no leaving door open.. someone (the dom) would be attacked. Closing the door ment barking.. scratching at door. And there's no leaving shitzus outside. Specially non leash, cage, fence, living by a major highway pure house dog ones.  Pretty bad when you gotta sneak out the house to a hotel or other means to have some fun.... not because of kids... but because of the "other" kids... the 4 legged ones... LOL
