There's a couple things that turn me off immediately. One line introductions telling me to contact them on yahoo or some other instant messenger are high on the list. I operate on the assumption that you get out of it what you put into it. If someone sends me a note consisting of a couple paragraphs, I'll return the gesture in kind. If somone sends me a one-liner asking me what city I live in, or telling me to look at their profile and contact them if I'm interested, chances are I won't be and I'll send them a one or two word acknowledgement hoping that it ends there. I see the introduction letter as a conversation starter so the more it contains, the higher the chances of a conversation getting off the ground with a bit of momentum.
