I was just wondering if you guys know of any good place out there (UK/US preferably) where you can learn to be a tattooartist other than going to the place where it's done and learn it by getting a job there[&:]

i look for color and detail, as well as non-faddiness of the tatt. 1 good one can be worth more the 5 medicore ones.

You could always go for 2/3 years at her Majestys Pleasure. They seem to have excellent in house training scheme (with food and accomodation), lots of volunteer models. Think however that availabilty of colours maybe a set back.
