Estring -> Cinnamon: Good For What Ails You (8/30/2006 8:39:15 PM)

I have been following the reports on cinnamon being effective in lowering cholesterol and helping in preventing diabetes. The spice has stood up to increased scrutiny unlike other things such as garlic or bran. The problem is, the cinnamon that you buy in most supermarkets is not real cinnamon. It is a close cousin, but it does not offer the same benifits as real cinnamon.
So my question is; Where can you purchase real cinnamon?

Buy whole cinnamon sticks and rake the powder yourself against a cheese shredder.

If you are purchasing cinnamon for medicinal purposes I would recommend that you get a quality item. I'm including the following resource for your review. I use this purveyor and can attest to the authenticity of the products offered.

Thanks to both of you for the info. I don't have any of those ailments yet, but it makes sense to use cinnamon as a preventative measure.  I read that it helps in lowering blood pressure too.
I mix it up in yogurt or apple sauce.

I have diabetes type II, do any of the studies show that it helps maintain blood glucose levels? or is it just helpful to those to prevent diabetes?

Estring,
I have been buying cinnamon capsules at my local health food store. They also have it in bulk and sell gelatin capsules you can fill yourself.

I crave cinnamon and been researching it a bit lately.  For my own interest of why the cravings.  Remember Domino's dots?  They used to put so much cinnamon on them, I used to have them made up without the sugar..just dump the whole box on it.
Well, they are gone so I have had to get more creative with cinnamon.

The one thing I do know is if you want the benefits you are not supposed to use any sort of ground cinnamon.  Just the whole stick version.
Don't know what it loses I haven't gotten that far yet.

It helps prevent and can also help you maintain normal blood sugar levels. It has a insignificant nutritional value of carbs and sugars so it's not going to cause your blood glucose levels to rise. Put cinnamon in your coffee or own whatever you perfer instead of sugar/artifical nasty crap. So though it may help in giving your taste buds some extra flavor, cinnamon will not help you raise your glucose level.

I've been adding cinnamon to my tea, cereal and anything else i can think of for years now to help prevent diabetes. Are you saying the powder in the spice can isn't helping me?[:o]

This is all new to me, I had no idea cinnamon did all that.

Lashra -> RE: Cinnamon: Good For What Ails You (9/1/2006 4:59:46 AM)

Thanks for the info I'll give it a try. I love cinnamon and its alot better than those artificial sweetners, though Splenda isn't too bad. I'm constantly fighting to keep my sugar down to the *new* target number of 107 . If they keep lowering it, everyone will be diabetic...[:o]

It helps prevent diabeties becuase it is keeping you from eating sugar thus putting less work load on your pancreas. The body can process cinnamonm much easier than sugar.

One of the most popular studies that has been published in Mens Health is that the smell of cinnamon alone has been said to increase blood flow to the vaginal area of women. So it's also a sexual stimulant.

Learn how splenda is made and then tell us how it isn't to bad. Stevia and Xylotol are the two popular all natural sweeteners that aren't bad at all. However, some find the concentration in stevia to be a bit to strong. I find Xylotol aka Xlyo Sweet to taste better than sugar.
