Now, I don’t pretend to know everything about everything, maybe even perhaps anything about anything, but I have to wonder.
Why do people put down things they know nothing about, or other people, or even what other people do for a living?
I’ve gone thought allot of posts here and some seem to have the same thread “putting down others”. I realize this is a pace to voice your thoughts and opinions on just about any and every subject, but do we really have the right to sit in judgment of other’s?
I mean, come on, we all know what the vanilla folks think of US and all our “weirdness
and kinkiness” We all know they talk behind our backs, and that some even join just to see the freaks. Yet so many sit in judgment of others here. I’m talking from religion to how we even perceive ourselves. Yes, we all have opinions, and this is the Land of The Free, we are entitled to speak our minds, but at what cost?
We share our little secrets with the anonymity of a computer screen, were safe in our own little world tapping away at our keyboards, so this gives people the right to talk trash about what others believe, think, and feel?
One of the biggest trash talk seems to be about Wicca, and I wonder why. Is it because we don’t understand it? Is it because we fear it? What is it about the Wicca people that we find so very threatening, or is it because we are intrigued with it, or maybe even yes, we fear it. I think perhaps it may be because we don’t understand it. Maybe we should learn about it before we judge it.

The second biggest trash talk…. Oh hell we all know we trash talk about anything lately, and again, there is that whole anonymity of a computer screen.

Well, I’ve said my peace, voiced my opinion… so.. let the trash talk begin

I don't recall seeing anything said about Wicca, let alone alot of negative comments said about it. Try saying you are a Republican or support the war in Iraq, or even defend The US. Then you will see how vicious it can get.
And I really don't think "vanilla" people give that much thought to what we do. I doubt many of them are talking behind our backs about it. And I could be wrong, but isn't that a bit of a judgement on your part?

Wicca has been trashed quite a bit here. I bet Sir Kenin would gladly point his posts out to you... along with his sig line.  I personally think Wicca is a rather peaceful religious choice, but if others have different opinions they are equally as entitled to voice them.

To the OP, I think for the most part, discussions are discussions... and it only becomes problematic when people think that if someone doesn't agree with their point of view, they are putting "them" down.  Sure, sometimes they are, and sometimes it's a difference in opinion, nothing more.

While some people use the computer to become a virtual bully....it's more than balanced with ordinary people just sharing their various points of view.  Often the reactions are far worse than the comments being reacted to.

If we all agreed with everything the others said... these boards would be ever so boring, and then we'd never learn about diversity and how not to judge others who think differently

I think I have come to understand you better when you are drunk.  Perhaps I should have a few drinks myself before daring to read your sober comments.

If someone is prejudiced against your religion or lifestyle, is he/she a person whose opinion you really care about to begin with?  I doubt it.  Let it go.  People fear what they don't understand, they find it threatening.  Or they may find the idea of diversity in life threatening.    And that is sad, because that's what makes life interesting.

Lashra -> RE: Curiosity: (8/31/2006 5:22:05 AM)

I don't think most vanilla's care about us, most of them think we are all freaks. As far as religions and political views, I frankly don't care what another person believes as long as they don't try to push them onto me. I know some people on the forum believe it is their job to try to force their opinions down other peoples throats and thats what I use the block button for. I don't have to listen to them and their mindless banter.

I really was not being judgmental, I was being curious, and wanted to hear (see) other people thoughts and opinions, and yes, I agree with some, and not with others, that there is my Freedom of choice, as it is everyone else’s.
Maybe I started this thread because I myself am Wicca and have never understood what the fear is all about, or the cynicisms in reference to it. I totally agree there are some out there who use it like a double edged sword, but trust me, they are NOT Wicca, they are wanna be’s. Now, do I really care what other people think or say about me? Not really, if I did I would not be expressive, un-afraid to voice my thoughts and opinions, and I sure as hell would not have the pride to be who I am.
Isn’t it interesting to see how others think and feel though?

Estring:

I do support the war, perhaps not for the same reason most do, but I do. Hell, I’ve had both my ex-husband and my son there, trust me, you don’t know fear until something like that is occurring in your life. My entire life has revolved around the Military, daughter, wife (ex now) and Mother. So you are right, try telling that to some people and see what reaction you get.

I have never pushed my beliefs on another; I believe in freedom of choice and detest those who do it to another. Thank you for your thoughts and views

I think CM is actually one of the best forums for diversity and low/no tolerance for flat out denigration, and the people who DO get into it are pretty obvious and shuffled to the side.

Replace Wicca with Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Feminism, School Lunch Advocates or any other group- they get their fair share and have their own "put downers" within their ranks as well.

Gee, and when I do that.. I'm called judgmental.  Go figure.

Damn those school lunch advocates!!!

Just kidding [:)].

I've said it before (and am obviously about to say it again), I think everyone is judgemental. Everyone. And it isn't always a bad thing. Adding a bit of respectfullness with that judgement at times would go a long way to smoothing things out, I believe.
