sharainks -> Are we defined only by our labels? (9/2/2006 11:37:02 AM)

As I read on here it seems that a lot of us tend to define people only by the label they wear. Each person has their own definition of that label. One person states that all humans have the right to their humanity including having limits. The next says that slaves have given up "all" right to self determine. Others say a slave can pre-determine up to when they surrender. The next is that submissive non slaves are somehow "less than" slaves. That perhaps they are too assertive about the areas they are not willing to yield to another. Switches...of course those appear to be the folks who can't make up their minds. It seems that many consider it impossible to enjoy both sides of this at different times, or possibly are just different with different partners. Masters, the responsible never failing, solid as a rock, brilliant, unyielding fortress that a submissive can submit totally to, mind, heart, body, and soul. Dominants, maybe not quite so much of anything as the Masters but still the in charge, somewhat responsible guy that you can trust for most things. Maybe I'm off base, cycling, or just grouchy from the dreary weather here, but don't these labels seem awfully limiting in how we perceive others? Isn't it more important to take some time to get to know what someone's about? Or, is this all just semantics? Just reading the answers on here sometimes makes me wonder about all this and why we react to certain posters the way we do. Is it only the label they choose?
