Cambodia passes adultery law, opposition walks out

Fri Sep 1, 10:08 AM ET

Cambodia's parliament passed a law Friday which could send adulterers to jail for up to a year.

The vote prompted a walkout by opposition lawmakers who said the law carried echoes of the Khmer Rouge and the Taliban in a country which should be tackling poverty and corruption instead of legislating about morality.

I say Nay to the first bit, and the second, and I think the third is just plain tragic.

You naysayer, you.  I second the nays, and the sorrow of the third.

What are those Cambodians thinking? (hit side of my own head in frustration). I'd think they'd be a little  more concerned with all of the sex with underage unmentionables they make available to Americans and others willing to travel abroad and pay for it, too, instead of focussing on adultery. It's worse than it is in Thailand, as far as that goes, I heard last week on MSNBC.

And in the case of the first bit, our own military is going a bit overboard, in the name of PR, dontcha think?

I don't believe in the death penalty for anything and I wouldn't change my mind because soldiers have commited a crime in a war I disagree with. They should be tried, which I think is a good thing and sentenced to terms of imprisonment if found guilty but no death penalty.

Well, as their opposistion claimed, they're trying to divert attention from far more pressing problems, which sounds right to me.

As to the possible death penalty for the soldiers; I don't support the death penalty, but if they're guilty of what they're charged with, they need to pay a heavy price. War is horrible, and things happen, but I don't want to see murder excused.

*It's just a sad country. I'm glad I don't live there. My stepson was adopted from there.

It does seem a sad, bleak place. I hope the prosperity much of Asia has seen makes its way there; after suffering with Pol Pot and his legacy for so long, they need something good to happen.

i'm curious.......do those who oppose the death penalty for american soldiers if convicted of murder support or oppose the death penalty generally? If support, how come the GI's get an opt out?

I don't know about anyone else, philosophy, but I am against the death penalty period, and always have been.  I understand why people support it, though.

You're welcome. Yeah, it took me forever to get around to adding a sig line, I went to a couple of quotes websites and dug around till I found something I liked lol. I've got a bunch more stashed away, I'll change them out as time goes by.

I am usually not in favor of death penalties for the common GI, in most cases they may have done the actual killing, but  the dirty deed was cooked up by those higher in the  chain.

isn't that just a variation on the old 'i was just following orders' excuse?

I think the death penalty is the product of posturing politicians & a society that has lost its' way.

Then society has never known its way, as the death penalty has always been here. As has political posturing lol.
