I'm all in favor of mandatory national service.  I'd like to see a strictly non-military option though.  An updated version of the Civilian Conservation Corps that does all sorts of hard, dangerous work in awful conditions for far less pay and worse treatment than those who choose a Combat arm.  I wonder how many protester types would put the money where the mouth is.

Privatize?  Interesting idea.  What corporation should the government grant a license to kill?

Yeah! Because people who don't want to kill other people are, like, just so deserving of WAY more abuse than people who want to kill other people!!

My two cents, I earned the right, like many fellow comrades in arms  to bitch, moan, and groan about what is wrong. Back when the new volunteer service was created,  I was one of the first to join as a triple volunteer, for both airborne then onto becoming a Ranger and then onto becoming a  Special Forces soldier.I am willing to sacrifice to make the changes  for the better . If your not willing to stand up when it gets tough, then you do not deserve the right to enjoy the fruits of everyone elses labor when times are a plenty.  To live a life without honor is not a life worth living.  DUTY HONOR COUNTRY!!!  DE OPRESSO LIBER

I'd guess that other wearers of the green beanie will agree with you lad...

Watch as police put pepper spray directly into the eyes of peaceful protesters...
http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9710/31/pepper.spray.update/

I have participated in peaceful protest marches under the eyes of idiotic cops armed with not just pepper spray but .308 sniper rifles.  That I could sort of deal with, what I find terrifying was how idiotic and dangerous the police tactics were.  Not only was their no layered formation for the police so they could stagger their response, they had nobody watching their backs, all eyes were on the peaceful march.  Anyone wanting to cause trouble could have caused havoc with a couple of half naked women and a team to come up behind the cops.

Freedom in this country isn't just protected by soldiers, protesters and activists have won many of the freedoms we value today as well, try and remember that tomorrow on LABOR DAY.

Why don't we go all out and privatize all three branches of the government while we're at it?

Seems like we're already well on our way...

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sad, but true.

"But I can't see how a private company concerned with profit could wield a better army. The bottom line in the military is to win, not make money."

......like a health service is there to look after peoples health and not make money? Sorry but given your posts on other threads that argument is sheer hypocrisy....

"I earned the right, like many fellow comrades in arms  to bitch, moan, and groan about what is wrong."

...what? and nurses, teachers etc have no right to analyse social situations?

"If your not willing to stand up when it gets tough, then you do not deserve the right to enjoy the fruits of everyone elses labor when times are a plenty."

...there are lots of ways to stand up, weilding a firearm is just one of them.

"I'm all in favor of mandatory national service.  I'd like to see a strictly non-military option though.  An updated version of the Civilian Conservation Corps that does all sorts of hard, dangerous work in awful conditions for far less pay and worse treatment than those who choose a Combat arm.  I wonder how many protester types would put the money where the mouth is."

..again with the military-good, nurses and teachers-less good argument. Would a soldier make a better teacher of 5 year olds than a primary school teacher? Would a munitions specialist make a better nurse than someone who has trained for it? And why stop at national service when you want to put a division in society.....make all teachers and nurses work for minimum wage and use the savings to double soldiers pay.
...and if anyone complains, well the better off people will be armed........

There are those who are willing to put themselves on the line for freedom and those who aren't.  There are those who take the kind of free expression we have right here for granted, and those who understand it is rare and precious.

What is the old cliche'?  'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.'  Something like that anyway.

Perhaps you mis-remembered another cliché – it is POWER, not freedom that comes from the barrel of a gun.
How is compulsory military service (or even more dangerous non-military service) defending anyone’s rights? How is force-feeding your kids to the maw of battle serving freedom? Why do you even need talk about conscription when it's been "Mission Accomplished" for the last half decade?

Enough chest thumping already.

Things aren't getting any better since the USA removed it's long time ally and best buddy from power in Iraq. And that CIA trained thorn in the side of the USSR... what's his name? Osama something or other? I guess it didn't matter if a few hundred-thousand Kurds got slaughtered or some women had their fingers chopped off for wearing nail-polish, as long as the enemies of freedom and democracy were getting their asses kicked.

The Middle East, South America, South East Asia; it's never been about exporting democracy. It's always been about feathering the eagle's nest.
